BOCA RATON — One preseason waiting game is over for the Miami Heat, with an NBA source confirming to the Sun Sentinel that fourth-year forward Nikola Jovic has agreed to a four-year, $62.4 million extension.
The contract, according to the source, is a straight four years, with no option clause for either side, with the deal fully guaranteed.
The Heat entered training camp with an Oct. 20 deadline for extensions with Jovic and guard Tyler Herro. Herro is eligible for a three-year, $150 million extension, with that window opening Wednesday. Jovic had been extension eligible since the start of...
Chicago Fire withstand Luis Suárez-led comeback to beat Inter Miami
By ANDRES JAIME-MENDEZ
FORT LAUDERDALE — The Chicago Fire jumped out to an early two-goal lead and withstood a furious second-half comeback try led by Luis Suárez in a 5-3 win over Inter Miami on Tuesday night.
With the victory, Chicago (15-6-11) secured its first playoff berth since 2017 and improved to eighth in the MLS standings.
Lionel Messi was held scoreless for the second straight game as Inter Miami, which has already clinched a playoff spot, slipped to 16-8-7. The loss hurt Inter Miami’s hopes of winning the Supporters’ Shield. The Philadelphia Union can secure the regular-season...
Things we learned in Miami Dolphins’ 27-21 victory over New York Jets
MIAMI GARDENS — The Miami Dolphins, who badly needed a victory, hosted the New York Jets on Monday and got that much-needed win, 27-21. But they might have lost star wide receiver Tyreek Hill for an extended period with a left knee injury. That was the bad news.
The good news is the Dolphins (1-3) got their first win of the season and also extended their home winning streak over the Jets to 10 games.
Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was efficient, the defense answered the call to play more violently (strictly in the football sense), and special teams continued making a big contribution to the...
Hyde10: Hill’s injury, Waller’s night, three takeaways — 10 thoughts on Dolphins’ win vs. Jets
MIAMI GARDENS — This Miami Dolphins season needed a whiff of good news, and got some with their first win of the season Monday night against the error-prone New York Jets.
The Dolphins won, 27-21, to move to 1-3 on the season. The Jets fell to 0-4. But it was an expensive with with a key injury for the Dolphins.
Here are 10 thoughts on the night:
1. The costliest 10-yard catch possible to the Dolphins season came early in the third quarter when Tyreek Hill was tackled by Jets safety Malachi Moore and tumbled out of bounds at the 36-yard line on the Jets sideline. Everyone immediately knew...
Instant Analysis: Miami Dolphins 27, New York Jets 21
Quick thoughts from South Florida Sun Sentinel staffers as the Miami Dolphins get their first victory of the season, but lose one of their stars to injury against the New York Jets at Hard Rock Stadium on “Monday Night Football”:
Chris Perkins, Dolphins Columnist
The Dolphins forced turnovers, played reasonably good defense and reduced mindless errors. Those are all positive signs and sustainable activities. Monday’s victory provided reason for optimism despite the knee injury to wide receiver Tyreek Hill, which put a dark cloud over the victory. Still, it was good to see the Dolphins, and...
Marlins shut out Mets to end New York’s playoff hopes in season finale
By ALANIS THAMES
MIAMI — The New York Mets entered Sunday’s regular-season finale against the Miami Marlins with a singular goal: win.
That was the only thing manager Carlos Mendoza’s fading team could still control in its bid to reach the postseason. But those hopes dissipated in one decisive inning.
New York could not overcome a four-run fourth by the Marlins, and the Mets were eliminated from the playoff field with a 4-0 loss.
The Mets missed the postseason a year after reaching the National League Championship Series and after holding the best record in the majors on June 12 — a...
Todd Golden’s Gators open practice seeking rare repeat
GAINESVILLE — Florida has done it before.
Coach Todd Golden’s Gators are now trying to do once more what only two other programs have done during the past 50 years: Repeat as national champions in men’s basketball.
Since John Wooden’s UCLA dynasty ruled the sport, winning seven straight during the ’60s and ’70s, only Duke (1991-92), UF (2006-07) and UConn (2023-24) have gone back-to-back.
Golden’s squad opened practice Monday with a legitimate shot to join those teams. But these Gators are much different than the group that repeated two decades ago with all five starters back from the 2006...
Hurricane Gabrielle forms, with two disturbances behind it
Hurricane Gabrielle has formed in the Atlantic, several hundred miles southeast of Bermuda. It is expected to turn north and eventually back east and head into the North Atlantic.
Gabrielle is only the second Atlantic hurricane of 2025. The other hurricane this season was Hurricane Erin, which formed in August in the Atlantic. It reached Category 5 strength, but stayed out to sea and did not make landfall.
“It’s very unusual for a second hurricane to show up this late. In fact, it hasn’t happened since 1994,” Fox Weather Hurricane Specialist Bryan Norcross wrote on his blog, Hurricane...
Bianchi: Scott Frost schools Bill Belichick in Bounce House beatdown
Bill Belichick didn’t wear his famous hoodie on Saturday, but maybe he should have. Perhaps it would have prevented the severe case of Frost bite he received at the Bounce House.
On a humid September afternoon in Orlando, Scott Frost took back his career with a resounding 34-9 victory over Belichick’s North Carolina Tar Heels. Frost didn’t just win a football game; he rewrote the first chapter of a narrative about who he is and what UCF can be.
And the irony of it all? He did so by outcoaching the man who for decades was considered untouchable. The genius. The legend. The six-time Super...
FBI sniper testifies that hiding spot near golf course was ideal place for man to shoot Trump
FORT PIERCE — An FBI sniper testified Thursday about the effectiveness of a hiding spot chosen by a man accused of trying to assassinate President Donald Trump at his Florida golf course last year.
FBI Special Agent Nicholas Schnelle said the sniper set up along the fence of Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach was about 126 feet away from the sixth hole, and it was well hidden by vegetation.
“It’s close and unobstructed,” Schnelle said.
Schnelle testified that the SKS rifle recovered from the scene has an effective range of about 350 meters (1,150 feet), nearly 10 times the...
