MIAMI GARDENS — When Miami Dolphins cornerback Jack Jones was called for the pass interference that sealed the team’s fate late in last Sunday’s loss to the Carolina Panthers, Fox broadcast cameras captured him arguing vehemently with officials.
Upon reflection and watching the play, in coverage against Panthers wide receiver Hunter Renfrow, Jones acknowledges it had the appearance of pass interference, but he didn’t view himself as ultimately culpable.
“With all honesty, that last call, when I watched it on film, it looks like a PI because he stops, he flares,” Jones said. “On that play, I...
Dave Hyde: A ‘goose-bumps’ Panthers night as banner goes up, new season starts with win
SUNRISE — This never gets old. Never. It even felt better in the repeating late Tuesday afternoon as the “Stanley Cup Champions” banner rose slowly to the rafters, Florida Panthers players watched on the ice with arms locked around each other and the sold-out crowd applauded.
“Goose-bumps,” said Panthers forward Jesper Boqvist.
Yes, this scene never gets old, no matter how many times it might happen, and the fans already were counting ahead.
“We want three,” they chanted in the final seconds of the offseason inside Amerant Bank Arena. “We want three!”
The unimaginable is now imaginable.
“We...
Norman Powell offers a taste of offensive punch in Heat exhibition loss to Bucks
MIAMI — So who scores for the Miami Heat in the early-season absence of Tyler Herro?
Norman Powell stepped forward with the likely answer in Monday night’s 103-93 exhibition loss to the Milwaukee Bucks at Kaseya Center.
Scoring 18 points in his 16 first-half minutes before getting the rest of the night off, the Heat’s prime offseason acquisition stepped up from deep to provide the type of spark that will be needed with Herro expected to miss the first month of the regular season following last month’s ankle surgery.
The 32-year-old veteran appeared far more comfortable with his fit after an...
New report details paramedics’ response to Epic Universe rider’s death
An incident report obtained Monday by the Orlando Sentinel details paramedics’ response after Kevin Rodriguez Zavala lost consciousness while riding the Stardust Racers roller coaster at Universal Orlando Resort’s new Epic Universe theme park last month, leading to him later being pronounced dead.
Orange County Fire Rescue was first dispatched to reports of an unresponsive citizen on Sept. 17 at 9:09 p.m., with the first personnel arriving at Epic Universe about six minutes later. They parked in the closest parking area, which was about 750 feet away from the entrance to Stardust Racers,...
UF defense delivered enough against Arch Manning
GAINESVILLE — Arch Manning likely might have been feeling some deja vu as he departed Florida Field. In trying to put a forgettable September behind him, the Texas quarterback instead opened his October with another loss.
The Gators sank the No. 9 Longhorns in their Saturday SEC opener — and perhaps the playoff chances for a quarterback who once drew comparisons to Florida icon Tim Tebow.
For much of the day, the preseason Heisman candidate looked disjointed and failed to create momentum during a 29-21 loss to Florida (2-3, 1-1 SEC). Manning made some plays down the stretch to keep it...
Chris Perkins: Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel can’t return next season
It’s now safe to say Miami Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel shouldn’t be back next year. The rest of this season is simply an exercise in how long owner Steve Ross allows McDaniel to twist in the breeze.
This isn’t a knee-jerk reaction. This is cumulative.
We’ve watched the Dolphins for the past three-plus seasons under McDaniel, capped by Sunday’s humiliating 27-24 loss at Carolina.
There’s no room left to question what McDaniel can accomplish the rest of this season. He can’t accomplish anything meaningful. This entire era is a lost cause, a missed opportunity.
The player empowerment. The...
Nikola Jovic starts over Kel’el Ware, Dru Smith returns as Heat open preseason with loss to Magic
For the first of six exhibitions, there still was a bit of preseason intrigue for the Miami Heat in Saturday night’s 126-118 loss to the Orlando Magic at San Juan at Coliseo de Puerto Rico in San Juan.
– After finishing last season as a starter and then being named second-team NBA All-Rookie, 7-foot Kel’el Ware opened the preseason as a reserve.
– A day after formally signing a four-year, $62.4 million extension, Nikola Jovic instead received the start.
– And after facing an unknown future following December’s Achilles tear, Dru Smith was back in action ahead of his anticipated schedule....
Florida gets $608 million from feds for Alligator Alcatraz, immigrant detention efforts
Amid battles about the detention center dubbed Alligator Alcatraz, the Trump administration has awarded $608 million to Florida for the state’s immigrant-detention efforts, a U.S. Department of Homeland Security official confirmed Thursday.
The funds came from $150 billion Congress funneled to the Federal Emergency Management Agency this year to assist with President Donald Trump’s crackdown on illegal immigration.
Gov. Ron DeSantis’ administration sought federal money to cover the costs of Alligator Alcatraz in the Everglades. The state opened another immigrant-detention center in Baker...
Hurricanes release first availability report before rivalry game vs. FSU
The Hurricanes’ first ACC availability report came out Thursday evening, listing the player who will not be available for Saturday’s game against Florida State.
No starters were listed as being out or questionable for Saturday’s game. Defensive end Hayden Lowe, who UM coach Mario Cristobal said was out for the year, was one of the players listed as out.
Defensive lineman Daylen Russell, who has played 14 snaps, was listed as questionable.
Running back Jordan Lyle and wide receiver Jojo Trader were not listed on the report. Neither was offensive lineman Samson Okunlola, who suffered a minor...
Police can’t search vehicles based only on marijuana smell, Florida court says
TALLAHASSEE — Pointing to laws allowing use of medical marijuana and hemp, a state appeals court Wednesday reversed course and said police officers can’t search vehicles only on the basis of smelling cannabis.
The 2nd District Court of Appeal’s main opinion said that for “generations, cannabis was illegal in all forms — thereby rendering its distinct odor immediately indicative of criminal activity.” But the opinion said legislative changes have “fundamentally changed its definition and regulation” and made cannabis legal to possess in multiple forms.
Citing the U.S. Constitution’s Fourth...
