Dolphins owner Steve Ross plans to be patient with Mike McDaniel, doesn’t want to fire coach, report says

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — The belief that Thursday night’s game could be coach Mike McDaniel’s last leading the Miami Dolphins may be more outside noise than the inclination inside the organization. An NFL Network report ahead of “Thursday Night Football” against the Buffalo Bills indicated owner Steve Ross is not imminently considering change atop the football operation. “Stephen Ross, the Dolphins owner, does not want to fire Mike McDaniel. He doesn’t,” NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport said on the Amazon Prime Video pregame show. “He wants this to work, likes him. He believes in him. He has invested...

Barricaded man shot and killed by BSO SWAT in Pompano

A barricaded man attacked a K-9 and was shot by BSO deputies in a home in Pompano Beach on Tuesday, Sheriff Gregory Tony said. Someone called the Sheriff’s Office just after 1:30 p.m. to report a “suspicious incident” in the 2300 block of Bay Drive, spokesperson Miranda Grossman said in a statement late Tuesday night. She did not provide further information about what the incident was. Deputies “made contact with an armed individual” once they responded, and “at some point during the response, a deputy-involved shooting occurred.” Sheriff Gregory Tony told reporters at the scene late...

Lionel Messi has goal and assist in Inter Miami’s win over Seattle Sounders

By ANDRES JAIME-MENDEZ FORT LAUDERDALE — Lionel Messi had a goal and an assist as Inter Miami beat Seattle 3-1 on Tuesday night just over two weeks after losing to the Sounders in the Leagues Cup final. The Sounders beat Inter Miami 3-0 in the Leagues Cup on Aug. 31, but Messi assisted a wide open Jordi Alba with an outside-of-the-foot pass in the 12th minute to give the Herons early command. Messi nearly doubled the score in the 28th minute when he received a ball over the top and once again tried to execute using the outside of his left foot, but the shot hit off the post. Alba returned...

SEC suspends UF’s Jabbar Juluke for role in LSU altercation prior to Gators’ loss

GAINEVILLE — The SEC suspended Florida running backs coach Jabbar Juluke three games for his role during a pregame altercation prior the Gators’ 20-10 loss at LSU. The league announced Juluke’s suspension Tuesday night ahead of UF’s visit Saturday to No. 4 Miami. “Jabbar Juluke’s conduct during the pregame altercation reflects behavior that is unacceptable and not aligned with the standards of the Southeastern Conference,” commissioner Greg Sankey said in a statement. “Coaches are expected to be leaders and to de-escalate tense situations, and that did not happen in this circumstance. This...

What does UCF’s quarterback situation look like against North Carolina?

Scott Frost must be a fan of suspense because the UCF coach isn’t willing to tip his hand when it comes to who will start at quarterback for the Knights against visiting North Carolina on Saturday. There is good news, however, as the Knights could have the services of injured quarterback Cam Fancher. “He’s cleared to practice,” Frost said on Monday. “I don’t know how close he is to 100% yet. We’ll figure that out as the week goes along.” Fancher opened the season as the starting quarterback but has been out of action since suffering an injury at the start of the second quarter of the season...

Chris Perkins: Dolphins have nothing going for them, and can’t find anything

MIAMI GARDENS — Here’s the Miami Dolphins’ biggest issue right now — there’s nothing they can count on to win games, or even stabilize their team, as they try to right their ship. That’s a lonely, frustrating, empty feeling. The Dolphins can’t even get the most basic things to go correctly. We saw that on the Dolphins’ final possession of Sunday’s 33-27 loss to the New England Patriots in the home opener at Hard Rock Stadium. They were flagged for a five-yard false start penalty on center Aaron Brewer, a team captain, and one play later they suffered another five-yard penalty for delay of...

No. 5 Hurricanes cruise to blowout win over No. 18 USF

MIAMI GARDENS — USF has been one of the upstart teams early in the college football season. Miami put an end to that. Despite a long weather delay, the No. 5 Hurricanes (3-0) rolled to a 49-12 win over the No. 18 Bulls at Hard Rock Stadium on Saturday, picking up their second top-25 win in the first three weeks of the season. “I think our guys, they didn’t want to be part of the narrative of somebody else’s success, (a) stepping stone kind of season,” Miami coach Mario Cristobal said. “That’s been the story all week. There was a lot of motivation going into this thing — besides the fact...

Caleb Banks back for Gators’ visit to LSU to provide a much-needed interior defensive presence

GAINESVILLE — Florida star defensive tackle Caleb Banks is back just in time for the Gators’ visit to No. 3 LSU. The 6-foot-5 ¾, 330-pound redshirt senior is not listed on Wednesday’s SEC availability report after missing the first two games with a foot injury. Banks could create the interior push UF could use to harass Tigers’ veteran quarterback Garrett Nussmeier pull off an upset as 7.5-point underdogs. With Banks on the sideline, the Gators have managed just two sacks in two games and could not contain USF dual-threat quarterback Byrum Brown, who rushed for 66 yards and passed for 263...

Josh Bell homers again, Nationals hold on to beat Marlins

MIAMI — Josh Bell homered for the fourth time in three games, Mitchell Parker threw 7 2/3 innings of two-run ball and the Washington Nationals beat the Miami Marlins 7-5 on Tuesday night. Rookie Daylen Lile also went deep while CJ Abrams and James Wood doubled and singled each for the Nationals. Parker (8-15) retired 14 straight after allowing Joey Wiemer’s solo homer in the second. The left-hander allowed four hits, struck out two and walked two. After losing five of their first six against the Marlins this season, the Nationals have won five straight against their NL East opponent....

South Florida woman accused of submitting fraudulent petitions for marijuana amendment

A South Florida woman was arrested in Coral Springs last month after allegedly submitting nearly 100 fraudulent petitions in support of the marijuana constitutional amendment in 2023, state officials said. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement first began investigating Jessica Sonia Humphreys, 24, of Miami, in January 2023 after the Escambia County Supervisor of Elections Office reported to agents what it believed were multiple fraudulent petitions submitted by Humphreys in support of the amendment to legalize marijuana, FDLE said in a news release Tuesday night. Humphreys had worked as...
