What officially caused the 2021 Champlain Towers South collapse that killed 98 people is closer to having an answer, as federal officials on Tuesday announced a tentative end to their investigation and that they’ve honed in on a singular failure in the building’s infrastructure that triggered the tragedy.
The National Institute of Standards and Technology said it plans to finish its technical work by the end of 2025 and begin drafting its reports. In the last four years, investigators initially had 12 hypotheses, which whittled down to three “higher-likelihood” scenarios.
Now evidence is...
Bell homers from both sides, has six RBIs in Nationals’ romp over Marlins
MIAMI — Josh Bell became the second Washington player to homer from both sides of the plate in the same game, finishing with four hits and six RBIs to lead the Nationals over the Miami Marlins 15-7 on Monday night.
Dylan Crews and Luis García Jr also homered as the Nationals matched their season high for runs and hits (19).
Miami drew just 7,992, its 12th crowd this season under 8,000.
Bell’s RBI single in the fifth put Washington ahead 3-1 and, batting right-handed, he hit a two-run drive off Josh Simpson for a 10-2 lead in the sixth.
Hitting left-handed, Bell added a two-run homer in the...
How much heat is on UF’s Napier among burning questions heading to LSU
GAINESVILLE — That didn’t take long.
Billy Napier is back on the hot seat as Florida (1-1) opens SEC play at No. 3 LSU after the Gators’ staggering loss to unranked USF Saturday night in the Swamp.
The Tigers (2-0) are a tough out at home, where the Gators have won just twice in 10 tries since 2003.
The questions entering Saturday night’s visit to storied Tiger Stadium begin with the obvious.
How much heat is on Napier?
Plenty, yet a lot of football also remains. But so do the same problems that have plagued Napier in the past.
Napier’s play-calling was at times predictable and execution...
Brendan Bett on spitting penalty in Gators’ loss: ‘I made a terrible mistake’
GAINESVILLE — Florida defensive lineman Brendan Bett said he “made a terrible mistake” for spitting on USF offensive lineman Cole Skinner, leading to a penalty that contributed to the Gators’ shocking 18-16 home loss on Saturday night.
Bett issued a statement on his social media accounts Monday night, two days after the incident that led to his ejection during the Bulls’ game-winning drive in the Swamp.
A Baylor transfer in his first year at UF, Bett apologized to teammates, coaches, fans and Skinner during a four-paragraph mea culpa.
“I want to sincerely apologize for my actions in the...
Chris Perkins: Dolphins’ loss to Colts means Patriots matchup is nearly a must-win Week 2 game
INDIANAPOLIS — All of a sudden, in the wake of a disappointing, jaw-dropping season-opening 33-8 loss at Indianapolis, the Miami Dolphins are facing a nearly must-win game in Week 2 against New England.
If the Dolphins lose their home opener next week to the winless Patriots (they lost at home to Las Vegas, 20-13) they’re facing an almost certain 0-3 start.
And then the pressure really would start to build on coach Mike McDaniel and general manager Chris Grier, and by association, quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.
The key thing to keep in mind is Sunday’s loss is just one of 17, meaning it’s only...
Dave Hyde: An opening disaster that confirmed every doubt of Dolphins
Tell me you turned it off.
Tell me you saved your Sunday and your sanity.
Tell me you didn’t go the entire, embarrassing distance to witness the Miami Dolphins being penalized for 12 men in the huddle on fourth down from the 2-yard line in the 54th minute of a 30-0 disaster at that point. Twelve men!
And tell me didn’t have to see — after De’Von Achane ran 11 hard yards for their best play and lone score — that Tua Tagovailoa called time-out before running the 2-point play. A timeout? Is that a first in NFL history?
See, they were awful all the way to the very end of this dismal...
No. 5 Hurricanes cruise to rout against outmatched Bethune-Cookman
MIAMI GARDENS — The Hurricanes needed to avoid a let-down against a scuffling FCS opponent after beating Notre Dame last week.
No. 5 Miami (2-0) accomplished that, beating Bethune-Cookman (0-2) 45-3 at Hard Rock Stadium on Saturday.
“You still have to play your guys, you’ve got to come to these games full throttle,” Miami coach Mario Cristobal said. “And our guys did a good job while they were in there, and they granted us the opportunity for the other guys to play, as well. So we got the best of both worlds.”
The Hurricanes wasted no time getting going. Miami forced a punt on...
Heat’s Arison speaks at Hall induction of initial ownership doubts, roses from Shaq, perseverance of Spoelstra
Micky Arison insisted that his induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame would be about more than his three-decade tenure as owner of the Miami Heat.
So as he spoke Saturday night at Symphony Hall in Springfield, Mass., not far from the sport’s shrine, he remained true to that vow.
Instead, he put the focus on those who helped engineer the franchise success that led to three championships, seven NBA Finals appearances, seven Eastern Conference championships, 10 Eastern Conference Finals appearances and 16 division titles.
At the start, that meant words of appreciation for...
USF, up next for Miami Hurricanes, stun No. 13 UF in Swamp
GAINESVILLE — Another early season no-show in the Swamp by the Gators.
Another season on the brink for Florida coach Billy Napier.
A week after UF was virtually flawless against an overmatched FCS foe, the No. 13 Gators fell apart Saturday night during an 18-16 loss to unranked USF that put Napier back in familiar spot — behind the 8-ball and on the hot seat.
A 20-yard field goal by USF sophomore Nico Gramatica silenced a sellout crowd of 89,909 at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium and sent the Gators (1-1) reeling before the season has even started — and will get only tougher.
“There’s no excuse...
Wood hits two-run home run as Nationals ride opposite-field hitting to win over Marlins
WASHINGTON — James Wood hit a two-run home run, rookie Daylen Lile drove in a run and scored another, and the Washington Nationals beat the Miami Marlins 5-2 on Tuesday night.
Lile hit a bloop double in the second and an RBI single in the third. Lile scored on Riley Adams’ double after his own double.
Adams scored on an opposite-field single from Jacob Young. Adams knocked the ball out of the glove of Marlins third baseman Connor Norby on a tag attempt to reach third base on the prior play.
In the fourth, Wood drove home Young with his 27th home run of the season.
Young was removed from the...
