MIAMI — Observations and other notes of interest from Sunday night’s 121-110 victory over the Detroit Pistons:
– Heading into the All-Star break, the concern was home for Heat didn’t mean heightened hope.
– That’s when the Heat not only lost three of their four home games before the break, but lost them to the likes of the Bulls, Hawks and Jazz.
– The concern was the current ongoing stretch of home games might not necessarily be optimized.
– Now?
– Concerns allayed.
– A five-game home winning streak,
– A 21-11 home record.
– Sunday’s game opened a four-game homestand, with matchups to...
MIAMI — The sizzle also has substance.
Not only is it now eight wins in the last 10 games for the Heat, but with ample quality wins to add substance to the surge.
Sunday night it was a rousing 121-110 decision over the East-leading Detroit Pistons to follow up Friday night’s victory in Charlotte over the streaking Hornets and last weekend’s home victory over the West-contending Houston Rockets.
Shorthanded yet again, the Heat still remained in a comfort zone as they extended their winning streak to five, consistently a step ahead of the Pistons.
So even with Norman Powell and Andrew Wiggins...
Observations and other notes of interest from Friday night’s 128-120 victory over the Charlotte Hornets:
– No, the Hornets’ youth was not lost on Heat coach Erik Spoelstra.
– Not with what Kon Knueppel, Brandon Miller and Charlotte’s other recent lottery picks have delivered amid this Hornets revival.
– But Spoelstra also used his pregame platform to note what the Heat have done with their youth.
– With options otherwise limited on this night, with Norman Powell, Andrew Wiggins and Simone Fontecchio among those out for the Heat.
– So, like many other coaches who have faced the Hornets in...
MIAMI – Observations and other notes of interest from Thursday night’s 126-110 victory over the Brooklyn Nets:
– With the Heat now past the quarter pole of their remaining games, coach Erik Spoelstra was asked pregame about the balance of getting his players on the court while also being mindful of not having nagging injuries linger.
– “We’re going for it,” Spoelstra said, as if reiterating his team’s every-game-matter mantra..
– He added, “I know at this time of year, everybody’s kind of dealing with something.”
– As is the case for the Heat at the moment, with Norman Powell (groin),...
MIAMI – On many other nights, the Miami Heat might have reached the point of peril.
Against the Brooklyn Nets, adversity merely proved to be an inconvenience Thursday night for Erik Spoelstra’s team.
So even with Bam Adebayo in foul trouble, with Norman Powell sidelined, and with an unexpected deficit in the third period, ultimately a 126-110 victory over the tanking Nets, the Heat’s sixth victory in their last eight games.
With Adebayo mostly a second-half spectator, the Heat got more than enough from replacement big man Kel’el Ware to make the fourth quarter largely ceremonial.
In backing...
TALLAHASSEE — Small autonomous or remotely operated personal delivery devices, used to carry food and small packages, would be allowed to operate on bike lanes and road shoulders under a transportation package approved by the Florida Senate on Wednesday.
However, those robotic devices would be prohibited under the measure (SB 1220) from making such deliveries in state parks, state forests and wildlife management areas. Additionally, the devices, along with unmanned drones, would be barred from flying over special districts and theme parks without their consent.
And that’s just a small part...
MIAMI –The subset of the standings has begun for the Miami Heat – also known as the fighting chance provided by the NBA.
Over these final six weeks of the season, as the Heat fight to avoid the play-in round for a fourth consecutive season, Erik Spoelstra’s team has been provided with two games against the Brooklyn Nets and three against the Washington Wizards, as in a Nets team now 15-46 and a Wizards team now 16-45.
Step 1 came Tuesday night at Kaseya Center with a 124-98 victory over the Nets, with the teams to meet again Thursday on the Heat’s court.
In no position for a misstep, the...

NEWARK, N.J. — U.S. Olympic golden goal-scorer Jack Hughes extended his points streak to four games since returning from Milan, and the New Jersey Devils dealt the Florida Panthers’ playoff hopes another blow by beating the two-time defending Stanley Cup champions 5-1 on Tuesday night.
Hughes’ shot that went wide banked right to Dougie Hamilton for his goal. Hughes has four assists — one in each game — since the NHL season resumed.
Hamilton, whose name has been involved in trade buzz for several months, also had an assist. It’s unclear if the Devils will be able to move the...
Nobody said getting to the NCAA Tournament would be easy.
UCF is finding that out the hard way as the Knights dropped a heartbreaker to Oklahoma State in overtime, 111-104, on Tuesday night. It was the second consecutive loss for the Knights, who still remain in the hunt for an elusive berth in the NCAA Tournament.
On Saturday, UCF rallied from 15 points before eventually losing to Baylor on a controversial foul in the final seconds, 87-86.
Themus Fulks scored a team-high 20 points as UCF (20-9, 9-8 Big 12) fell to 13-5 at Addition Financial Arena this season.
It was especially...
CORAL GABLES — Ryan Bilka came in to relieve Rob Evans, who put two runners on in a 4-4 game after a strong outing. Bilka walked the first batter he faced.
Then he struck out Jacob Kendall. He followed that by striking out Kyle Jones. One more out, and he would have escaped the bases-loaded, no-out jam.
Bilka induced a fly ball to center field that Mikey Torres tracked down. He celebrated. Then third-base umpire Travis Carlson sent the Hurricanes back to the field. He called a balk on the play. The inning would continue with the Gators up by a run.
Miami could not get another run, and...
