UCF drops a heartbreaker in home finale, losing to Oklahoma State

Nobody said getting to the NCAA Tournament would be easy. UCF is finding that out the hard way as the Knights dropped a heartbreaker to Oklahoma State in overtime, 111-104, on Tuesday night. It was the second consecutive loss for the Knights, who still remain in the hunt for an elusive berth in the NCAA Tournament. On Saturday, UCF rallied from 15 points before eventually losing to Baylor on a controversial foul in the final seconds, 87-86. Themus Fulks scored a team-high 20 points as UCF (20-9, 9-8 Big 12) fell to 13-5 at Addition Financial Arena this season. It was especially...

UCF snaps 3-game losing streak with emphatic win over TCU

Jordan Burks wasn’t happy with how UCF had let a 14-point, second-half lead slip away in a loss to West Virginia on Saturday. Instead of wallowing in frustration, Burks took things into his own hands, tying a career-high with 23 points in helping the Knights to an 82-71 win over visiting TCU on Tuesday night. UCF (18-7, 7-6 Big 12) snaps a three-game losing streak, the longest of the season, while solidifying an NCAA Tournament resume. The Knights already have wins over ranked foes Kansas and Texas Tech, but a nine-win mark in conference play would go far to making their case for an...

UCF stumbles in second half against West Virginia, drops third straight

A Valentine’s Day showdown at Addition Financial Arena was supposed to help UCF feel the love again after a recent two-game slide. Instead, the Knights had their hearts broken as West Virginia rallied from a 14-point second-half deficit to pull out a 74-67 win on Saturday. The loss was painful not only because it was the third in a row, but it put the Knights’ postseason hopes in peril. The team had been on track to earn an NCAA Tournament berth for the first time since the 2018-19 season, but those hopes are starting to evaporate. West Virginia (16-9, 7-5 Big 12) went on a 28-13 run over...

ORLANDO — Riley Kugel scored 17 points, Jordan Burks hit a late 3-pointer and finished with 15 points, and UCF rallied to beat Arizona State 79-76 on Tuesday night. UCF used a 14-2 run to tie it 72-all with 2:30 remaining. Burks’ 3 gave the Knights a 78-76 lead with 34 seconds left, and he forced a turnover on the next possession. Themus Fulks split a pair of free throws for UCF with six seconds to go before Bryce Ford missed a 3-pointer to end it. Jamichael Stillwell added 14 points and Fulks finished with 12 for UCF (16-4, 5-3 Big 12). John Bol grabbed 10 rebounds, and Kugel and Stillwell...

New UCF QB Alonza Barnett III seen as ‘ultimate competitor’

For Darryl Brown, few football players stand out like Alonza Barnett III, a talent brimming with the tools for success. Brown witnessed Barnett’s skill firsthand while serving as his coach at Grimsley High School in Greensboro, N.C. The pair would help to lead the Whirlies to the NCHSAA Class 4A state championship in 2020, with Barnett earning MVP honors along the way. Even five years later, the admiration for his former player can be heard in Brown’s voice. “He’s a winner and one of the nicest, most polite young men you’ll ever meet,” Brown recently told the Sentinel. “When you put him on...

UCF expected to hire Oklahoma State assistant as tight ends coach

UCF is expected to hire former Oklahoma State coach Cooper Bassett as the Knights’ new tight ends coach. CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz was the first to report the move, which was later confirmed by a team source. Bassett, 35, takes over coaching the tight ends from Steve Cooper, who is the team’s offensive coordinator. The move most likely frees up Cooper to spend more time with the offense as a whole. The Oklahoma native joins AJ Blazek (offensive line) and Will Johnson (defensive back) as new coaches joining Scott Frost’s staff heading into Year 2. Bassett was a four-year letterwinner as a...

New UCF transfer Kahmel Johnson excited about playing closer to home

Nobody was likely happier about Kahmel Johnson’s recent commitment to UCF than his mother, Jesika. “My momma was going crazy. She was crying and [was emotional],” Johnson shared with the Sentinel on Sunday, just hours after he signed with the Knights from the transfer portal. It’s a homecoming, of sorts, for the 6-foot-2, 200-pound defensive back, who hails from Jacksonville, where he excelled at football and track and field at Riverside High School before leaving the state to play at Wayne State College, a Division II school in Nebraska. Johnson is coming off a breakout season with the...

UCF adds 4-star Booker High receiver Tyren Hornes to 2026 class

With so much uncertainty swirling around the transfer market, UCF football landed its most significant piece of the offseason when 4-star receiver Tyren Hornes signed with the Knights and their 2026 recruiting class on Saturday. Hornes, a 6-foot, 175-pound standout at Booker High School in Sarasota, announced his decision at the Under Armour All-American Game, where he earned MVP honors. He finished with a game-high 68 yards receiving on three catches with a touchdown. The South Florida native had 39 offers from schools such as Georgia, Kansas State, Michigan State, Auburn and Ole Miss. In...
