Are college coaches using mental health waivers for their own selfish benefit? | Commentary

No, Mack Brown, shame on you. Shame on you and your hypocritical coaching colleagues for seemingly exploiting and perhaps even inventing a player’s mental health issues to skirt the NCAA’s multiple transfer rules. Brown, North Carolina’s football coach, had a well-choreographed temper tantrum recently when the NCAA denied the immediate eligibility waiver of Tar Heels transfer receiver Tez Walker. NCAA rules allow players to transfer once without sitting out a year while they are undergraduates, but since Walker has transferred twice before he needed a waiver to play this season. After Gators...

UCF rolls over Villanova in QB Timmy McClain’s debut

It’s been nearly two years since quarterback Timmy McClain last started a game, so forgive the 21-year-old if there was a bit of rust to his game. His last start came against UCF when the Sanford Seminole High product played for rival USF and he nearly led the Bulls to an upset win. McClain was back at FBC Mortgage Stadium on Saturday night, but this time with the Knights after transferring last year. He was thrust into the starting job after John Rhys Plumlee suffered a leg injury in the team’s win at Boise State last week. This time, he was on the winning end as UCF jumped out to a 34-0 halftime...

UCF’s John Rhys Plumlee sparks Knights to blowout win over Kent State

It was far from a perfect performance, but UCF was efficient in its season opener, rolling past Kent State, 56-6 Thursday night at FBC Mortgage Stadium. The win was the perfect way for the Knights to start their first season in the Big 12 vs. a nonconference opponent. Quarterback John Rhys Plumlee accounted for four touchdowns but had three turnovers as UCF (1-0, 0-0 Big 12) amassed 723 yards of offense against the Golden Flashes (0-1, 0-0 MAC). It was the most yards in a game since the Knights totaled 737 yards against Temple on Oct. 13. Stephen M. Dowell/Orlando SentinelUCF quarterback John...

UCF lands commitment from 4-star running back Frankie Arthur

UCF continues to build on one of its best recruiting classes in program history with the verbal commitment of Texas running back Frankie Arthur Monday. The Oak Ridge (Texas) High product is the 15th player to pledge to the Knights’ 2024 class. All verbal commitments are non-binding but can become official during the early signing period in December. Arthur is the No. 111 overall player in the class, according to 247Sports’ composite rankings, and the fifth-best running back in the country. His commitment, along with that of Stacy Gage (23), gives UCF two top-25 running backs in their 2024 class. UCF...

‘Cross that bridge next year’: Malzahn focused on UCF camp, not realignment

In the past week, the future of college athletics changed in a quick and dramatic direction. Pac-12 members Oregon and Washington announced their plans to join the Big Ten next year while Arizona, Utah and Arizona State finalized their move with Colorado to the Big 12 Conference. For UCF coach Gus Malzahn, it was just another week of football practice. “I’m coaching my team,” Malzahn said Sunday when asked about the recent additions to the Big 12. “You wake up and there’s something new.” It’s unclear what the future holds for the remaining Pac-12 schools — Oregon State, Washington State, Stanford...

South Carolina eliminates UCF softball, sets up regional final vs. FSU

TALLAHASSEE — The  South Carolina softball team used a 5-run fifth inning and scored 4 more in the seventh Saturday night to beat UCF 10-1 and secure a spot in Sunday’s NCAA Tallahassee Regional Final against No. 3 Florida State at the Seminole Softball Complex. The Gamecocks led 1-0 after stealing home in the second inning and took advantage of costly errors made by the Knights in the fifth to take control of the game. With the bases loaded and one run already scored in the inning, South Carolina’s Aaliyah White singled up the middle with two outs. As runners rounded the bases, an errant throw...

UCF, FSU softball capture wins to open NCAA Tallahassee Regional

TALLAHASSEE — Chloe Evans did a little bit of everything for UCF softball Friday night. The junior transfer from Minnesota went 2-for-4 with a double and a triple while helping the Knights capture a critical first win, 6-1, against South Carolina in the NCAA Tallahassee Regional at the Seminole Softball Complex. “It doesn’t matter who’s pitching or how hot they are, she’s a tough out,” UCF coach Cindy Ball-Malone said about Evans. “She’ll just keep knocking on their door until something goes through and then when they try to make an adjustment, she does something else.” The Knights (40-19) struck...

Wichita State transfer Jaykwon Walton commits to UCF men’s basketball

Hours after receiving a commitment from UMKC 4-star transfer Shemarri Allen, UCF men’s basketball landed a pledge from a second top prospect out of the portal Thursday night. Wichita State guard Jaykwon Walton announced his intentions to join Johnny Dawkins and the Knights for their inaugural season in the Big 12 Conference. A 4-star transfer on 247Sports.com, Walton ranked as the nation’s No. 91 overall prospect in the portal, according to the recruiting website. The move, however, comes with controversy. Walton, who averaged a career-high 13.9 points as the Shockers’ leading scorer last season,...
