The Hurricanes found their new defensive coordinator.
Minnesota defensive coordinator Corey Hetherman is in line to take the same position at Miami, according to multiple reports. Hetherman replaces Lance Guidry, who Miami fired in December.
Hetherman spent only one season as the Gophers’ defensive coordinator, but his was one of the nation’s best. Minnesota ranked ninth in the nation in points allowed per game (16.9) and fifth in the nation in yards allowed per game (285.7). The Gophers had the No. 12 rush defense and No. 9 pass defense. Pro Football Focus gave Minnesota the No. 22 defensive...
Ricky Barber heard his name echo throughout the Bounce House one last time.
It had been over a month since the former UCF defensive tackle last stepped onto the field at FBC Mortgage Stadium during his final game with the Knights. However, he returned to participate in the Caribe Royale Orlando Hula Bowl on Saturday.
Barber went out in style, recording 2 tackles, 3 pressures and a sack, drawing a huge cheer from the crowd.
“I heard the Bounce House [announcer] go, ‘Ricky Barber,’ and it was just one of those moments,” Barber said of his sack of former Elon quarterback Matthew Downing in the...
GAINESVILLE — Beating John Calipari on the road last season was a massive step for Florida coach Todd Golden and his program.
A win now against Coach Cal away from Gainesville could signal a natural progression for Golden’s surging Gators.
Calipari’s surprising offseason move from Kentucky to Arkansas makes the SEC’s winningest coach an easier mark than with the Wildcats, who won the 2015 national title and a dozen conference crowns — six each during the regular season and conference tournament — while he was there.
Florida backup guard Denzel Aberdeen had a season-high 16 points during the...
For 30 minutes Wednesday night, UCF basketball looked like a team suffering from whiplash.
Three days removed from an embarrassing 51-point home loss to Kansas on Sunday, the Knights looked out of sorts. But a surge in the final 10 minutes helped them surge past visiting Colorado, 75-74.
Dallan Coleman’s free throw, which capped the scoring with 35 seconds remaining, helped to lift UCF (11-3, 2-1 Big 12) to the win.
It’s the second consecutive win over the Buffaloes for the Knights, who beat CU 79-74 in the National Invitation Tournament on March 15, 2017.

GAINESVILLE — Florida finally knocked off No. 1 at home, where the Gators are becoming impossible to beat.
UF did it playing top-ranked Tennessee’s own game.
Coach Todd Golden’s squad put the defensive clamps on Vols and never let up during a resounding 73-43 win Tuesday night, extending the Gators’ winning streak to 16 games in the O’Connell Center — where they are 8-0 and winning by an average of nearly 30 points.

UCF has added a veteran coach to its football staff, hiring former Appalachian State coach Shawn Clark as its new offensive line coach.
ESPN’s Pete Thamel first reported the move, which the Orlando Sentinel confirmed.
Clark, 49, spent nine seasons at his alma mater, first as offensive line coach and then head coach, guiding the Mountaineers to a 40-24 overall record, including a 25-15 record in the Sun Belt. But he was fired after a 5-6 campaign this past season.
“I’m thrilled to join UCF as the new offensive line coach and have the chance to work with such talented student-athletes and coaches,”...
LUBBOCK, Texas — Darius Johnson had 24 points, Keyshawn Hall scored 22 and UCF upped its win streak to six after holding on for an 87-83 victory against Texas Tech on Tuesday in a Big 12 Conference opener.
Johnson made 3 of 4 free throws in the final 19 seconds after the Knights (10-2) saw an 18-point second-half lead shrink to one.
UCF used a 24-12 run in the first 10 minutes of the second half to turn an eight-point halftime lead into a 71-53 advantage. Chance McMillian answered with a three-point play and scored five in an 11-0 run during the next 2 1/2 minutes as Texas Tech (9-3) closed...
ORLANDO — Miami’s postseason game ended the same way its regular season did — with an excellent offensive effort overshadowed by poor defense.
The No. 13 Hurricanes, with Heisman Trophy finalist Cam Ward leading the way one last time, scored 41 points. But the defense, missing multiple key players and lacking depth at key positions, surrendered 42 to No. 18 Iowa State as Miami lost the Pop-Tarts Bowl at Camping World Stadium in Orlando. It is UM’s sixth straight bowl loss.
“(I) feel for guys like this, Jalen Rivers, guys who really exhausted every ounce that they’ve had for the University of...
Keyshawn Hall and Jordan Ivy-Curry combined to score 40 points as UCF closed out its nonconference portion of its season with an 86-66 win over visiting Jacksonville on Saturday.
The Knights also saw the return of guards Jaylin Sellers and Mikey Williams, who were making their season debuts.
Sellers, a senior, went down with an undisclosed injury in an exhibition game against Florida Gulf Coast on Oct. 20. Williams, a redshirt freshman, was wearing a boot on his left foot for the first few games and only recently has been seen without one.
The Knights (9-2) leaned on their defense early, turning...
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Will Richard scored 22 points, Alijah Martin added 19 points and No. 7 Florida held off a furious second-half rally by North Carolina to remain unbeaten with a 90-84 victory Tuesday night in the Jumpman Invitational.
R.J. Davis had 29 points and eight rebounds for the Tar Heels (6-5), who battled back from a 17-point first-half deficit to take a four-point lead late in the second half.
