LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) — Thomas Haugh had 20 points and nine rebounds as No. 5 Florida beat Kentucky 84-77 on Saturday to end the regular season with an 11-game winning streak.
Boogie Fland added 16 points and six assists for the Gators (25-6, 16-2 Southeastern Conference), the No. 1 seed in next week’s SEC Tournament at Nashville, Tennessee. The defending national champions completed a regular-season sweep of the Wildcats (19-12, 10-8).
Alex Condon scored 14 points for Florida. Rueben Chinyelu had 13 points and eight rebounds, and Xaivian Lee finished with 11 points, seven...
Nobody said getting to the NCAA Tournament would be easy.
UCF is finding that out the hard way as the Knights dropped a heartbreaker to Oklahoma State in overtime, 111-104, on Tuesday night. It was the second consecutive loss for the Knights, who still remain in the hunt for an elusive berth in the NCAA Tournament.
On Saturday, UCF rallied from 15 points before eventually losing to Baylor on a controversial foul in the final seconds, 87-86.
Themus Fulks scored a team-high 20 points as UCF (20-9, 9-8 Big 12) fell to 13-5 at Addition Financial Arena this season.
It was especially...
CORAL GABLES — Ryan Bilka came in to relieve Rob Evans, who put two runners on in a 4-4 game after a strong outing. Bilka walked the first batter he faced.
Then he struck out Jacob Kendall. He followed that by striking out Kyle Jones. One more out, and he would have escaped the bases-loaded, no-out jam.
Bilka induced a fly ball to center field that Mikey Torres tracked down. He celebrated. Then third-base umpire Travis Carlson sent the Hurricanes back to the field. He called a balk on the play. The inning would continue with the Gators up by a run.
Miami could not get another run, and...

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — Chance Mallory drew a foul on a 3-point attempt with 3.6 seconds to play, and then sank all three free throws to lift No. 14 Virginia to an 86-83 win over Miami on Saturday.
Jacari White came off the bench to score 17 points, hitting five 3-pointers for the Cavaliers (24-3, 12-2 Atlantic Coast), who won their eighth straight.
Sam Lewis had 15 points, Thijs De Ridder scored 14, and Mallory had all 12 of his points in the second half.
Shelton Henderson and Tre Donaldson each scored 18 to lead Miami (21-6, 10-4), which saw its four-game win streak...
Jordan Burks wasn’t happy with how UCF had let a 14-point, second-half lead slip away in a loss to West Virginia on Saturday.
Instead of wallowing in frustration, Burks took things into his own hands, tying a career-high with 23 points in helping the Knights to an 82-71 win over visiting TCU on Tuesday night.
UCF (18-7, 7-6 Big 12) snaps a three-game losing streak, the longest of the season, while solidifying an NCAA Tournament resume. The Knights already have wins over ranked foes Kansas and Texas Tech, but a nine-win mark in conference play would go far to making their case for an...
A Valentine’s Day showdown at Addition Financial Arena was supposed to help UCF feel the love again after a recent two-game slide. Instead, the Knights had their hearts broken as West Virginia rallied from a 14-point second-half deficit to pull out a 74-67 win on Saturday.
The loss was painful not only because it was the third in a row, but it put the Knights’ postseason hopes in peril. The team had been on track to earn an NCAA Tournament berth for the first time since the 2018-19 season, but those hopes are starting to evaporate.
West Virginia (16-9, 7-5 Big 12) went on a 28-13 run over...
GAINESVILLE — Florida golfer Matthew Kress arrived as an unsung teenager lacking the pedigree, résumé and confidence of many fellow Gators.
Coach JC Deacon’s 2021 squad featured accomplished amateurs, blue-chip recruits and seasoned collegians brimming with potential. Behind the scenes, Kress quietly wondered whether he belonged.
Day by day, he became indispensable to Florida’s surge of success, including 17 tournament victories with Kress in the lineup.
If Deacon’s team extends its streak of six straight Gators Invitational titles this weekend, the fifth-year senior will lead the...
GAINESVILLE — Rusty Whitt is a strength coach, soldier and story teller, a trifecta of talents he’ll use to help head coach Jon Sumrall rebuild the Florida Gators.
As if executing an Olympic lift, Whitt blends complex components into a concentrated, explosive message aimed to inspire discipline and accountability while pushing a talented group of players to strain every fiber of their being.
Whitt and Sumrall face a heavy lift in Gainesville, where the Gators have managed just one winning season in five years.
“Our job is to hone them and get them stronger and understand the professional...

Henderson scored 19 points...
