UCF’s Danny Neri still riding high after 3-homer night in Big 12 tourney

A day after hitting three home runs in his first Big 12 Baseball Championship, UCF catcher Danny Neri was still trying to catch up with friends and family who reached out to congratulate him. One of those to congratulate the senior was ESPN NBA Senior Insider Adrian Wojnarowski, who posted on social media, “Who doesn’t like @DannyNeri39 hitting [bombs]?” “He and my dad grew up together in Bristol, Connecticut,” said Neri. “They’re best friends. My dad was the best man at his wedding, so we stayed in close touch. He comes to visits every once in a while and he’s always asking about baseball and...

Danny Neri’s historic performance lifts UCF to first Big 12 tourney win

Danny Neri made history Tuesday night as the UCF catcher became the first player to hit three home runs in a Big 12 Baseball Championship game, powering the Knights to a 6-5 win over Cincinnati in 11 innings at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. It was the first multi-home run performance for the senior, who came into the tournament with 4. Neri’s third homer — a shot down the rightfield line — in the top of the 11th was the winner and saved UCF, which blew a three-run lead in the bottom of the ninth inning to the Bearcats. The win advances the Knights to the double-elimination tournament,...

UF record-setter Jac Caglianone’s success with Gators has been a family affair

GAINESVILLE — The end of Jac Caglianone’s record-setting run is set to arrive like one of the towering lefty’s 98-mph fastballs — fast and a bit unpredictable. Perhaps the best two-year stretch in program history has been a blur for the 21-year-old two-way star and Gator Nation, led by his two biggest fans. Jeff and Johanne Caglianone have shared a front-row seat for their son’s improbable journey, rarely missing a game at home or away. “It’s really kind of surreal for us,” Jeff told the Orlando Sentinel. “He’s had success at a lot of levels, but you never envision what he’s been able to do.” UF...

Gators reach softball Super Regionals for 15th time under Tim Walton

GAINESVILLE — UF sophomore Jocelyn Erickson left Oklahoma for a chance to play catcher and win another championship. If coach Tim Walton can capture his third national title — and first since 2015 — Erickson’s decision will loom even larger. The 19-year-old slugger’s 2-run home run in the first inning proved to be enough during a 9-1 rout of South Alabama Sunday at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium. Two innings later, Erickson ignited a 7-run third with an RBI single, giving her a team-leading 78 on the season — two shy of Megan Bush’s school record set in 2011. The Gators also defeated South...

Gators softball clobbers South Alabama

Fifth-year senior Skylar Wallace continued her torrid offensive streak with an inside-the-park home run and four RBI while senior Katie Kistler had a bases-clearing double and freshman pitcher Keagan Rothrock won for the sixth time in as many starts as the fourth-seeded Gators run-ruled South Alabama 9-1 during Saturday’s weather-delayed NCAA Gainesville Regional. “Overall, we just grinded it out,” Florida coach Tim Walton said. “I was really happy with the way we transitioned from one pitcher to the other because they’re completely different and teams have struggled with their differences and...

UCF softball drops another game to FSU in NCAA Regional

UCF softball couldn’t dig out of an early hole, falling to 15th-seed Florida State, 5-1 on Day 2 of the NCAA Tallahassee Regional Saturday at JoAnne Graf Field. Saturday’s game was the second consecutive season in which these two programs have met in the NCAA Regional, with UCF also falling short in a 5-1 loss to FSU on May 20, 2023. The Knights have lost 15 straight to the Seminoles since 2011. Florida State (45-14) scored five runs in the top of the second inning as Amaya Ross opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly. A wild pitch by Knights starting pitcher Kaitlyn Felton (11-6) led to a throwing...

Red-hot Gators enter NCAA Tournament in thick of national title hunt

GAINESVILLE — Florida center fielder Kendra Falby’s boom box blared as the Gators’ team bus bounced to the winning beat. Coach Tim Walton was all smiles — happy to be along for the ride. “We were literally shaking the bus,” Falby recalled Thursday. “The bus driver is probably like, ‘Oh my god. Coach Walton is probably going to have to pay for tires.’ “But you could just feel, he loves it.” UF (46-12) enters Friday’s Gainesville Regional against Florida Gulf Coast (37-19) as the NCAA Tournament’s No. 4 seed and riding an eight-game winning streak following the program’s first SEC Tournament title...

UCF softball set to face Auburn in NCAA Tallahassee Regional

UCF softball earned its fourth consecutive appearance in the NCAA tournament, with the Knights set to square off against Auburn in the Tallahassee Regional on Friday (2 p.m., ESPNU). It’s the first time in program history that the Knights (30-23, 12-15 Big 12) have appeared in four straight tournaments. The team wrapped up its first season in the Big 12 and was among the last four teams to make the tournament. “It was honestly, really nerve-wracking,” said outfielder Chloe Evans. “I had a lot of faith in this team and was just hopeful that you know what we’ve done this season, and just being...
