Days of Alabama, Georgia dominating SEC and college football are over | Commentary

It’s over, Georgia. It’s over, Alabama. Your dominant, dynastic days of ruling the SEC and reigning over college football are a relic of days gone by. No longer can you stockpile talent with the confidence that your second- and third-string five-stars will wait patiently for their turn. The transfer portal has enabled “lesser” programs to shatter your glass ceiling, and NIL payments have further redistributed the wealth. Sure, you’ll still be good — great, even. But your era of absolute dominance, where you stood unchallenged atop your league and your sport, is a thing of the past. The playing...

As FSU coordinator, Malzahn aims to boost ground game

TALLAHASSEE — Gus Malzahn is at Florida State because of his coaching connection to Mike Norvell, going back nearly two decades to Tulsa. But Malzahn’s connection to FSU is also clear, and it’s a visual that hangs up at the Moore Athletic Center near the new offensive coordinator’s office. He sees it daily — Seminoles wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin going up for a pass over the middle from Jameis Winston on a play that sealed the 2013 national title over Malzahn’s Auburn team. “I’ve got to walk by the picture of the guy catching the ball as I go to the office every day,” Malzahn said Wednesday....

Seminoles searching for solutions at Notre Dame

By Bob Ferrante Orlando Sentinel Correspondent TALLAHASSEE — The future is on display each week now for Florida State, with freshmen and sophomores starting across the offense. But it’s becoming tougher and tougher to gauge the progress of some of the young Seminoles because of the myriad problems. Florida State’s eighth starting offensive line combination allowed seven sacks and pressure on the majority of drop-back passes from Brock Glenn and Luke Kromenhoek in last week’s 35-11 loss to North Carolina. Glenn or Kromenhoek are the quarterbacks of the present, but coach Mike Norvell is also...

Private equity firms would run college football much better than school presidents and ADs | Commentary

As a college football fan, the initial inclination is to recoil at the very idea of our beloved sport getting into bed with a private equity firm and selling its soul for a massive influx of new cash to help fund the expensive impending revenue sharing with athletes. The No. 1 objection you always hear is this: “If a private equity firm gets involved by loaning billions of dollars to college athletic programs across the country, then those firms will have the power to tell college athletic directors and presidents how that money would best be spent.” Question: Is that really such a bad thing? If...

James Tibbs III sends FSU to College World Series for 24th time

TALLAHASSEE — James Tibbs III had all the answers Saturday, except one for Florida State. He’d just hit his third home run of the game, a two-run shot in the top of the 12th inning, to carry the No. 8 seed Seminoles back to the College World Series for the 24h time in defeating UConn, 10-8, and sweeping the Tallahassee Regional. “I sat on the bench and I told the coaches and everybody around us, ‘It’s getting to the top [of the lineup]. It’s done.’ I went up to [first baseman Daniel] Cantu and I was like, ‘I’m going to end it right here.’ “That was pure luck. I was just confident. I was just...

UCF has no answers in loss to FSU in Tallahassee Regional

Florida State pitcher Jamie Arnold struck out 12 UCF batters through seven innings as the Knights lost to the Seminoles 5-2 in the winner’s bracket of the Tallahassee Regional at Dick Howser Stadium on Saturday. UCF (36-20) will face Stetson in an elimination game on Sunday at Noon. The Hatters (41-21) advanced with a 4-0 win over Alabama after pitchers Aric McAtee and Anthony DeFabbia combined to pitch a 5-hitter. FSU (44-15) awaits the winner of UCF-Stetson in the championship game (6 p.m.). The regional games were delayed three and a half hours due to weather, with the first pitch for the...

College football is idiot-proof and will thrive despite having to pay players | Commentary

Will you please halt all of the hand-wringing and teeth-gnashing? Cease and desist with all of the castigation and consternation. And, for the sake of the late and great Beano Cook, stop with these ridiculous doomsday scenarios that college football is circling the drain now that the NCAA and the power conferences have agreed to allow schools to directly pay players for the first time in the 155-year history of the sport. Believe me, college football will not only continue to survive, it will thrive just as it always has for one very simple reason: It’s idiot-proof. Completely and totally idiot-proof. The...

UCF softball drops another game to FSU in NCAA Regional

UCF softball couldn’t dig out of an early hole, falling to 15th-seed Florida State, 5-1 on Day 2 of the NCAA Tallahassee Regional Saturday at JoAnne Graf Field. Saturday’s game was the second consecutive season in which these two programs have met in the NCAA Regional, with UCF also falling short in a 5-1 loss to FSU on May 20, 2023. The Knights have lost 15 straight to the Seminoles since 2011. Florida State (45-14) scored five runs in the top of the second inning as Amaya Ross opened the scoring with a sacrifice fly. A wild pitch by Knights starting pitcher Kaitlyn Felton (11-6) led to a throwing...

Showcase offered insight into Seminoles’ priorities

By Bob Ferrante Orlando Sentinel Correspondent TALLAHASSEE — No score or stats were kept inside Doak Campbell Stadium for Florida State’s spring showcase, a modified format that coach Mike Norvell has embraced for years. But it did feature 25 minutes of 11-on-11 competition as well as some special-teams drills. The showcase gave fans a first look at 25 newcomers via the transfer portal as well as early enrollees. And for media who have had an open view of this spring’s practices, what was seen over the course of a month lined up with what transpired on Saturday. Here are three takeaways: Offensive...
