A federal judge on Thursday barred the DeSantis and Trump administrations from bringing new detainees to Alligator Alcatraz and demanded the state begin closing out operations at the immigration detention facility within 60 days.
U.S. District Judge Kathleen Williams, in her 82-page ruling, prohibited the state and federal governments from bringing additional detainees to the detention center, which has drawn mass protests. She also stopped any expansion of the detention facility, including adding industrial lighting or erecting any new buildings, such as tents or dormitories.
Though her...
New York man charged with DUI manslaughter in 2022 Broward crash that killed two
A New York City man was extradited to Broward County this week after law enforcement officials say he drunkenly drove a car that crashed on Interstate 95, killing two people in 2022.
Florida Highway Patrol troopers say Nick-Quan Francis, 30, was intoxicated when he slammed the rented Honda sedan he was driving into a highway barrier at 89 mph about 6:30 a.m. on May 8, 2022, in Fort Lauderdale.
Two passengers not wearing seatbelts were ejected upon impact and died. A third passenger, who was wearing a seatbelt, lived and told troopers that Francis was driving, per his probable cause...
FPL proposes deal to increase rates — but not by as much as originally sought
TALLAHASSEE — Florida Power & Light and numerous groups and businesses have hammered out a proposed settlement that would increase base electric rates over the next four years — but not by as much as the utility originally sought.
The proposed settlement, filed Wednesday at the Florida Public Service Commission, would lead to increases of $945 million in 2026 and $766 million in 2027, according to the utility. FPL also would collect additional amounts in 2028 and 2029 for solar-energy and battery-storage projects.
FPL filed a proposal in February that sought increases of $1.545 billion...
What we learned from Dolphins’ joint practices, preseason game vs. Lions
DETROIT — The Miami Dolphins finally traded their views of the Great Lakes for a return near the Atlantic Ocean, and they came back with a 24-17 preseason win over the Detroit Lions.
Now, that’s no indication the Dolphins are anywhere near on par with the Super Bowl-contending Lions. It was mostly backups against backups in Saturday’s exhibition at Ford Field, and Detroit first-teamers certainly showed they have a leg up on Miami in the week’s two joint practices.
But there was a lot to grasp from the week in Michigan and potential for growth for the Dolphins in preparation for the regular...
Heat sign second former Magic G League prospect, camp roster at 18
MIAMI – For the second time this summer, the Miami Heat have turned to the Orlando Magic’s farm system to add a prospect for training camp.
In the wake of signing Magic G League forward Myron Gardner to a two-way contract last month, after several solid efforts from Gardner for the Heat in summer league, the Heat on Wednesday night announced the signing of Magic G League guard Ethan Thompson to an Exhibit 10 camp tryout contract.
The move with Thompson likely will be to seed the Heat’s G League program. Earlier Wednesday, the Heat’s affiliate, the Sioux Falls Skyforce, announced that they...
Dolphins’ Jordyn Brooks, Tyrel Dodson settle sideline fight at practice
CHICAGO — After Miami Dolphins linebackers Jordyn Brooks and Tyrel Dodson had a physical altercation on a sideline at the team’s joint practice with the Chicago Bears on Friday, they squashed it publicly following Sunday’s preseason opener at Soldier Field.
“Wasn’t no disagreement,” Brooks said in the locker room. “That’s my dog right here, man. Brothers fight all the time. That’s all that was, man — brotherly love, man.”
Dodson chimed in next to Brooks in the locker room: “Anybody got kids, they fight all the time.”
Coach Mike McDaniel’s take Sunday on the matter backed what his players...
Dave Hyde: Tua (and most starters) play as Dolphins show change from last preseason
For starters, Tua Tagovailoa started. That was good and different. Most Miami Dolphins first-teamers played a bit in Sunday’s first preseason game at the Chicago Bears in a needed change from last August.
Tua starting is most important because he’s the franchise quarterback, he’s fragile and it was unnecessary.
Except coach Mike McDaniel considered it necessary for good reason. If you look at last year’s struggling start to the regular season after Tua and most starters sat most of the preseason, you see why this year is different and Sunday’s work mattered.
“That was the Boss man’s...
United Airlines flights grounded nationwide because of technology problem
By JACK BROOK and LISA BAUMANN, Associated Press
United Airlines flights on major routes were grounded Wednesday because of a technology issue, and additional flight delays were expected into the evening, the airline said.
An alert on the Federal Aviation Administration website said all United flights destined for Chicago were halted at their departing airports. The agency said Denver, Newark, Houston and San Francisco airports were also impacted by halted flights.
“Safety is our top priority, and we’ll work with our customers to get them to their destinations,” an emailed statement from...
Florida health officials warn about risks of raw milk after 21 infections linked to farm
Florida health officials are warning people about the possible risks of consuming raw milk after 21 people, including children, were recently infected all from one farm.
The popularity of consuming unpasteurized milk has surged in Florida in the past few years, although it is one of a few states nationwide that only allows it to be sold as pet or animal food and not for human consumption.
While many drink it safely, disease-causing bacteria can be in raw milk, including Campylobacter, E. coli, listeria and salmonella, according to the Florida Department of Health.

Dolphins pay Zach Sieler, give reliable DT contract extension
Miami Dolphins defensive tackle Zach Sieler always felt the team would come through for him, and they did.
The Dolphins and Sieler agreed on a three-year contract extension worth up to $67.75 million and with $44 million in guarantees Sunday evening, according to agent Drew Rosenhaus.
Sieler last was at the negotiating table with the Dolphins ahead of the 2023 season, and it got him his previous deal, at $10.25 million in average annual value.
That figure ranked 29th among defensive tackles in the NFL as he outplayed the contract.
Sieler had 10-sack seasons in both 2023 and 2024, making him...
