A winless preseason it is for Heat, ending with 141-125 loss to Grizzlies

MIAMI — Perhaps it was played for real simply because there now are four days off before Wednesday night’s season opener in Orlando. Or perhaps it was because the Miami Heat entered 0-5 this preseason. So there in the starting lineup Friday night were five players who well could be in the starting lineup for Erik Spoelstra when it begins for real against the Magic. It might not have been a dress rehearsal, but it was far from a typical throwaway game at the end of the preseason. Didn’t matter. For only the second time in the franchise’s 38 seasons, the Heat wound up winless in a...

Beck throws four interceptions, No. 2 Hurricanes stunned by Louisville for first loss

MIAMI GARDENS — After Miami quarterback Carson Beck threw his third pick of the game, the Hurricanes’ chances of coming back against Louisville appeared to be over. But that was not what the script said. He had another interception coming. The No. 2 Hurricanes were driving for a potential tying field goal or winning touchdown, but Beck threw his fourth interception, allowing Louisville to seal a win 24-21 at Hard Rock Stadium on Friday. After Beck’s third interception, Louisville tried to run with Isaac Brown, who had gashed UM all night. But Miami defensive back Keionte Scott forced a...

UCF quarterback Cam Fancher ruled out for West Virginia game

UCF quarterback Cam Fancher has been ruled out for this Saturday’s game against West Virginia, according to the Knights’ player availability report posted late Wednesday night. Fancher is coming off his second start of the season last week at Cincinnati, where he finished with 333 total yards of offense in a 20-11 loss to the Bearcats. He previously started the season opener against Jacksonville State on Aug. 28 but left the game in the second quarter after suffering an apparent back injury. He was replaced by Tayven Jackson, who led the Knights to a 17-10 comeback win. #UCF listing QB Cam...

Red Wings send Panthers to second straight loss after 3-0-0 start

DETROIT (AP) — Cam Talbot made 21 saves, Mason Appleton scored twice and the Detroit Red Wings beat Florida 4-1 on Wednesday night as the Panthers dropeed their second game in a row after a 3-0-0 start. Appleton opened the scoring at 2:09 of the second on a snap shot. Patrick Kane added a power-play goal at 9:36, firing a shot from right side to the near top corner. Appleton put it away into an empty net with 1:58 left, and Michael Rasmussen also had an empty-netter. Brad Marchand scored on a wraparound for Florida with 5:55 left in the second. Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 21 shots. Before the...

TNT Sports brings its college football coverage to UCF

As UCF coach Scott Frost took to the podium for his weekly news conference on Monday, he did so under the watchful gaze of a national television camera crew. This week’s game against West Virginia (1 p.m. Saturday) will air on TNT, TruTV and HBO Max. It’s all part of a new agreement between the Big 12 and TNT Sports. “We were obviously just excited for a partnership,” Drew Watkins, senior vice president and creative director at TNT Sports, recently told the Sentinel. “It’s a great conference with a lot of great teams and a lot of fanfare and we were just excited to bring our TNT sports...

Couturier scores twice as Flyers hand Panthers their first loss of season

By DAN GELSTON PHILADELPHIA — Sean Couturier’s second goal of the game with 4:10 remaining snapped a tie and sent the Philadelphia Flyers to a 5-2 win over the Florida Panthers on Monday night in Rick Tocchet’s home coaching debut. Bobby Brink and Christian Dvorak added late empty-netters for the Flyers. The Flyers captain, Couturier became the longest-tenured athlete in Philadelphia sports once Eagles defensive end Brandon Graham retired at the end of last season. The Flyers lost their first two games of the season on the road but got a needed lift on a throwback night at home. Tyson...

Heat fall to 0-4 in preseason, as starters sit, Mitchell returns, Ware shines, Jakucionis sidelined

ORLANDO — If there is to be a preseason dress rehearsal for the Heat’s Oct. 22 regular-season opener, coach Erik Spoelstra made clear Sunday that it would not come against his team’s season-opening opponent. So 11 days from the start of the Heat’s 38th season, Spoelstra gave the night off to the three players seemingly locked into his opening-night starting lineup: Bam Adebayo, Andrew Wiggins and Norman Powell. Instead, in the fourth of the Heat’s six exhibitions, Spoelstra rolled out the mix-and-match starting lineup of Kel’el Ware, Keshad Johnson, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Pelle Larsson and...

Chris Perkins: This Dolphins house of cards seems on the verge of collapse

MIAMI GARDENS — I don’t know how, or if, Miami Dolphins coaches and players can keep this team together any longer. You get the sense things are falling apart, but still somehow being loosely held together even in the wake of Sunday’s potentially back-breaking 29-27 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. But at some point soon these players are going to realize that they’re not a good team, which is what their 1-5 record screams. At some point soon these players are going to realize, as I have, that their assessment of their talents a mere two months ago (I had them winning nine games) was off...

UF overrun at Texas A&M to remain winless on road against ranked teams

COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Florida quarterback DJ Lagway’s homecoming ended in disappointment after a hot start as Billy Napier’s Gators failed to complete a Texas two-step and finally beat a ranked team on the road. A 34-17 loss Saturday night at clamorous Kyle Field dropped Napier’s team (2-4, 1-2 SEC) to 0-13 on the road against Top 25 foes and intensified the pressure on UF’s head coach. Napier and the Gators looked to build on last weekend’s decisive 29-21 win against Texas but could not replicate their dominance at the line of scrimmage or unleash true freshman receiver Dallas Wilson. A...

Kel’el Ware, Heat youth step forward in preseason loss to Spurs

MIAMI – It’s a bit early to determine if this will be a developmental season for the Miami Heat. Unless, of course, you listened to coach Erik Spoelstra immediately prior to Wednesday night’s 112-107 preseason loss to the San Antonio Spurs at Kaseya Center. “Just to be clear,” Spoelstra said, “everybody on our roster, it’s a developmental year. We would hope to improve everybody.” With more next-gen talent to develop than in recent seasons, the Heat offered a taste of the possibilities, particularly with 2025 first-round pick Kasparas Jakucionis making his preseason debut, and with 2024...
