Hurricanes on the outside looking in at playoffs in first College Football Playoff rankings

If the season ended today, the Miami Hurricanes would miss the College Football Playoff. Fortunately for Miami, the season does not end today. But UM currently ranks 18th in the first College Football Playoff rankings, which were released Tuesday night. Mack Rhoades, the Chair of the College Football Playoff Selection Committee, said the committee “felt strongly” about where it put UM. “And I think we all believe Miami’s got a talented team when you look at their roster, their roster composition,” Rhoades said “Certainly think they’re really good defensively. I think if they can maybe...

By W.G. RAMIREZ LAS VEGAS Freshman Koa Peat scored 30 points to lead No. 13 Arizona to a 93-87 win over third-ranked and defending national champion Florida in the Hall of Fame Series on Monday night. Peat was impressive in his college debut, shooting 11 of 18 from the floor and adding seven rebounds and five assists. He was fouled making a defensive rebound with 14.2 seconds left and hit his two ensuing free throws to seal the victory in both teams’ season opener. But, it was consecutive dunks by Peat late in the second half that sent the crowd at T-Mobile Arena into a frenzy and...

Winderman’s view: Andrew Wiggins offers a reminder for shorthanded Heat in loss

SAN ANTONIO – Observations and other notes of interest from Thursday night’s 107-101 loss to the San Antonio Spurs: – Andrew Wiggins has spent the bulk of his career deferential. – Because save for his early years with the Minnesota Timberwolves, there mostly was something better alongside. – That certainly was the case with the Warriors. – The case alongside Tyler Herro with the Heat last season. – And then alongside Norman Powell at the start of this season. – Thursday, there was no Herro, no Powell, and not the jet fuel that had been Jaime Jaquez Jr. to start the season, with Jaquez...

Spurs, Wembanyama too tall of an order for shorthanded Heat in 107-101 loss

SAN ANTONIO – At some point, you just need more. Because against quality, even when playing at pace, the absence of the scoring of Norman Powell and Tyler Herro becomes too much to overcome. The long and the short of the Miami Heat’s 107-101 loss Thursday night to the San Antonio Spurs at Frost Bank Center was the Spurs had 7-foot-5 Victor Wembanyama in the middle and the shorthanded Heat lacked too much on the perimeter. Against the Charlotte Hornets, the wing deficiency could be overcome, as the Heat showed Tuesday night at Kaseya Center in winning in the absences of Powell and Herro. But...

He was ruled out later in the first half. Robinson will now have to clear a five-step concussion protocol in order to return to play. He’ll have extra time, with Miami’s next game on Nov. 9 against the Buffalo Bills. Robinson was a first-round pick of the team in...

The former Orlando Jones standout and tailback Jadan Baugh are tied with 726 all-purpose yards, including a team-high 451 receiving yards for Brown. Among the true freshman’s team-leading 32 receptions are three of UF’s four pass plays of at least 40 yards. The 5-foot-11 ¼, 178-pound Brown has been a bright spot on an offense averaging an SEC-low 17 points against FBS competition. But he injured a...

By ALANIS THAMES SUNRISE — Troy Terry and Mason McTavish scored in a shootout, and the Anaheim Ducks beat the Florida Panthers 3-2 on Tuesday night. Leo Carlsson had a goal and an assist, and Cutter Gauthier also scored to help the Ducks end a five-game trip with a victory in coach Joel Quenneville’s first game against his former team. Quenneville, who coached the Panthers from 2019-21, returned to Sunrise for the first time since resigning as Florida’s coach after details of a sexual-assault scandal involving his 2010 Stanley Cup-winning Chicago Blackhawks squad were revealed in October...
