Winderman’s view: Closing time turns into just another night of Heat misery amid 13-13 mediocrity

ORLANDO – Observations and other notes of interest from Saturday night’s 121-114 loss to the Orlando Magic: – This was no time for easing off the gas. – Not when a two-game losing streak could have turned into three. – Not with Jimmy Butler back in Miami with a stomach illness. – But, most importantly, not after what happened Monday night in Detroit. – That’s when the Pistons opened without Tobias Harris and Jaden Ivey and then lost Isaiah Stewart early. – And still found a way to beat the Heat in overtime. – Even with Butler going for a triple-double. – This time, the opposition was a...

Heat blow 25-point lead, fall 121-114 to shorthanded Magic in Butler’s absence

ORLANDO – Just when you thought any worse wasn’t possible after blowing an eight-point overtime lead in Detroit at the start of the week, it got worse for the Miami Heat at the end of the week. Against a severely depleted Orlando Magic roster, the absence of Jimmy Butler hardly appeared to register through the first three quarters for Erik Spoelstra’s team, with the Heat racing to a 25-point lead. And then, a collapse of epic proportions, and now, a three-game losing streak following Saturday night’s 121-114 loss at Kia Center. On a night when the offense was flowing at season-best level...

Jaylin Sellers, Mikey Williams make returns as UCF routs Jacksonville

Keyshawn Hall and Jordan Ivy-Curry combined to score 40 points as UCF closed out its nonconference portion of its season with an 86-66 win over visiting Jacksonville on Saturday. The Knights also saw the return of guards Jaylin Sellers and Mikey Williams, who were making their season debuts. Sellers, a senior, went down with an undisclosed injury in an exhibition game against Florida Gulf Coast on Oct. 20. Williams, a redshirt freshman, was wearing a boot on his left foot for the first few games and only recently has been seen without one. The Knights (9-2) leaned on their defense early,...

Antoine Harris, 28, and Jaquan Thomas, 29, are each facing two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Beatrice Saintvil, and her daughter, Janelle Souffrant. Detectives received warrants for their arrest Wednesday. After authorities received reports of a shooting shortly before midnight on June 7, Saintvil and her daughter were found by Florida Highway Patrol troopers inside of...

Judge rejects Broward teen’s challenge to Florida’s trans athlete law

A federal judge has dismissed a Broward County teen’s challenge to the constitutionality of a 2021 Florida law that bars transgender female students from playing on women’s and girls’ sports teams. U.S. District Judge Roy Altman on Thursday issued a 32-page decision rejecting arguments that the law violated the equal-protection rights of the student, identified by the initials D.N. Altman said the student needed to show the Legislature had a discriminatory purpose in passing the law (SB 1028). The lawsuit, in part, cited statements made by legislators that it said showed such...

Winderman’s view: Cunningham, Pistons make their case against Herro, Heat

DETROIT – Observations and other notes of interest from Monday night’s 125-124 overtime loss to the Detroit Pistons: – Tyler Herro and Cade Cunningham both stated their cases in this one. – Each seeking to become a first-time All-Star. – Each doing what they do best. – Cunningham filling the boxscore with a triple-double for the Pistons. – Herro providing late theatrics to force overtime for the Heat. – The kids are coming. – As we saw in this one. – For both Herro and Cunningham, any All-Star berth likely will mean a reserve spot behind the likes of Damian Lillard, Donovan Mitchell, Jalen...

Heat rally, Butler triple-double not enough in 125-124 OT loss in Detroit

DETROIT – The last time the Miami Heat attempted to storm back against the Detroit Pistons at Little Caesars Arena, it was nothing short of mayhem, falling a month ago in overtime in a game decided by Heat coach Erik Spoelstra calling a timeout his team didn’t have. This time, the Heat had their wits about them, with Tyler Herro again heating up late. But this time, the same result, an overtime loss, this time a 125-124 decision, in a game that ended with Spoelstra without a timeout and with Tyler Herro off with a 3-point attempt just before the final buzzer. Despite rallying from 19...

Chris Perkins: I’d give these Dolphins one more year before making sweeping changes

HOUSTON — The numbers are ugly. The disappointment runs deep. The question is how the Miami Dolphins and owner Steve Ross will choose to address the situation and move forward in 2025. After Sunday’s 20-12 loss at Houston to the Texans, the Dolphins are 26-24 (.520), including playoffs, under coach Mike McDaniel. You are what your record says you are, and in this case that’s a huge, somewhat predictable disappointment. The Dolphins have never been very good under McDaniel — and they’re getting worse. Change is obviously necessary. Otherwise the Dolphins are wasting their time, which is what...
