Jimmy Butler returns as Tyler Herro’s 32 lift Heat over Pelicans 119-108

MIAMI – There was no middle ground for the Miami Heat in this one: either make it four victories in their last five games, or become the rarest of victims in the NBA – a loser to the New Orleans Pelicans. As a matter of perspective, the Pelicans entered on a 10-game losing streak, with losses in 19 of their previous 20 and without a road victory since their road opener on Oct. 25. Against that backdrop, the Heat went up 17 early, saw all but one point of that lead melt away before emerging with a 119-108 victory Wednesday night at Kaseya Center, never trailing. With Jimmy Butler back in the...

Harry Chandler, Navy medic who survived Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor, dies at 103

By AUDREY McAVOY HONOLULU (AP) — Harry Chandler, a Navy medic who helped pull injured sailors from the oily waters of Pearl Harbor after the 1941 Japanese attack on the naval base, has died. He was 103. Chandler died Monday at a senior living center in Tequesta, Florida, according to Ron Mahaffee, the husband of his granddaughter Kelli Fahey. Chandler had congestive heart failure, but Mahaffee said doctors and nurses noted his advanced age when giving a cause of death. The third Pearl Harbor survivor to die in the past few weeks, Chandler was a hospital corpsman 3rd class on Dec. 7, 1941,...

Silver Airways files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in South Florida, will continue operating

Financially troubled Silver Airways, the 13-year-old regional carrier serving Florida, the Bahamas and the Caribbean, has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection with a pledge to continue flying and reorganize its finances at some point during the first quarter of the New Year. The airline, which in 2023 was nearly evicted from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport for falling behind on its rent, said in a note to customers that “all tickets remain valid” and that they may book flights through the airline’s website “or any other channel.” U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Peter Russin of...

Man accused of killing Fort Lauderdale jeweler after Rolex deal ‘gone bad,’ police say

A man is accused of murdering a Fort Lauderdale jeweler in his showroom after a deal for a $20,000 Rolex had “gone bad,” according to police. Nenad Milosevic, 56, of Fort Lauderdale, faces a second-degree murder charge in connection with the death of Anthony D’Amore, 73. Fort Lauderdale Police officers on Dec. 23 found D’Amore’s body inside of his business’s suite in an office building in the 6200 block of North Federal Highway, a probable cause affidavit said. He had been reported missing a few days earlier. D’Amore’s name is redacted in the affidavit, but Fort Lauderdale Police identified...

Chris Perkins: Dolphins keep finding a way, and that’s an impressive trait

CLEVELAND — The Miami Dolphins are still alive. But what a bizarre day and what a strange game. It was a weird combination of quarterback Tyler “Snoop” Huntley, wide receiver Tyreek Hill, kicker Jason Sanders, linebacker Tyrel Dodson (team-best 15 tackles, one interception), edge rusher Emmanuel Ogbah (five tackles including a strip-sack) and others that came up big to deliver this 20-3 victory at the Cleveland Browns. Where were the superstars? That’s kind of the point of Sunday’s win. It wasn’t necessarily the superstars who delivered one of the biggest wins of the season. It was the...

Winderman’s view: Heat show fight in Houston; will fight up the standings follow?

Observations and other notes of interest from Sunday night’s 104-100 victory over the Houston Rockets: – So much of this game said so much about who the Heat are and what they want to be. – When push came to shove, they pushed and shoved. – Showing, just like the victory a few Sundays back against Cleveland, that the fight remains. – But it also showed how difficult it can be at times. – This one as much of a struggle at times as Saturday’s loss in Atlanta. – This time they made shots. – And, so, ballgame. – But as a possible future without Jimmy Butler is considered, this one also showed...

Heat get physical and feisty in pushing past Rockets 104-100 behind Herro’s 27

A reasonable New Year’s resolution for the Miami Heat? Aspiring to something more than average. Sunday night in Houston moved Erik Spoelstra’s team in that direction, in a feisty display. With guard Tyler Herro continuing to thrive as both a leading man and a complete contributor and with backup big man Nikola Jovic also filling out the boxscore, the Heat pushed past the Rockets 104-100 at Target Center to make it three victories in their past four games. While 16-14 might not have been the ultimate goal at the New Year’s break, with the Heat 19-13 a year ago at the same break, this had the...

Hurricanes fall to Iowa State 42-41 in Pop-Tarts Bowl, dropping sixth straight bowl game

ORLANDO — Miami’s postseason game ended the same way its regular season did — with an excellent offensive effort overshadowed by poor defense. The No. 13 Hurricanes, with Heisman Trophy finalist Cam Ward leading the way one last time, scored 41 points. But the defense, missing multiple key players and lacking depth at key positions, surrendered 42 to No. 18 Iowa State as Miami lost the Pop-Tarts Bowl at Camping World Stadium in Orlando. It is UM’s sixth straight bowl loss. “(I) feel for guys like this, Jalen Rivers, guys who really exhausted every ounce that they’ve had for the University...

Winderman’s view: Heat’s Spoelstra vents prior to loss in Atlanta about Kings coaching move

ATLANTA — Observations and other notes of interest from Saturday’s 120-110 loss to the Atlanta Hawks: – Typically emotion can be difficult to muster for an afternoon game. – Prior to Saturday’s tipoff, Heat coach Erik Spoelstra joked about the potential need for another cup of coffee. – But he was plenty caffeinated when asked about the Kings’ Friday decision to dismiss coach Mike Brown less than two years after Brown led Sacramento to the playoffs and was named NBA Coach of the Year. – For Spoelstra, this was personal. – “I texted with him last night,” Spoelstra said. “It’s just a really...

Winderman’s view: Gritty, grimy and necessary as Heat offer Orlando payback

ORLANDO — Observations and other notes of interest from Thursday night’s 89-88 victory over the Orlando Magic: – Because this is who they are. – And who they have to be. – Tyler Herro with the dramatics. – And a lot of grit and grime otherwise. – Even with Jimmy Butler. – Or, in this case, without. – No, not pretty. – But needed. – Especially after a day of Butler-a-go-go. – Granted the Magic were without their two best players. – But who is going to be picky after what happened last time in this building? – No, this team does not score with grace or ease. – Especially amid a struggle like...
