Houston starter Framber Valdez (9-8) limited the Marlins to four hits and two runs – one earned – through 7 2/3 innings before Soler and Arraez connected with solo shots to make it 4-1 and end the left-hander’s outing.
“It’s fun because I never hit homers,” Arraez said. “I followed Soler and said it was my time.”
Hector Neris relieved and allowed Bell’s blast over the wall in right. Bell, who celebrated his 31st birthday, extended his...
Hawaii churches offer prayers for the dead and the missing after devastating Maui wildfires
By CLAIRE RUSH, AUDREY MCAVOY and CHRISTOPHER WEBER (Associated Press)
LAHAINA, Hawaii (AP) — Parishioners mourned the dead and prayed for the missing Sunday in Hawaii churches as communities began looking ahead to a long recovery from last week’s wildfire that demolished a historic Maui town and killed more than 90 people.
Maria Lanakila Church in Lahaina was spared from the flames that wiped out most of the surrounding community, but with search-and-recovery efforts ongoing, its members attended Mass about 10 miles up the road, with the Bishop of Honolulu, the Rev. Clarence “Larry”...
Two disturbances forecast to emerge off Africa, ending quiet period over Atlantic Ocean
A dormant August stretch of storm activity in the tropics is set to conclude as the National Hurricane Center is forecasting two disturbances off the west coast of Africa.
After a week and a half of quietude over the Atlantic Ocean, the 8 p.m. update described one area of low pressure in the east-central Atlantic and another in the eastern area of the body of water.
Both systems initially have been given a 20% chance of development over the next week.
Of the more centrally located area of interest, the National Hurricane Center wrote:
An “area of low pressure could develop by the middle to...

Follow live updates about wildfires that have devastated parts of Maui in Hawaii this week, destroying a historic town and forcing evacuations. The National Weather Service said Hurricane Dora, which passed south of the island chain, was partly to blame for strong winds that initially drove the flames, knocking out power and grounding firefighting helicopters.
The Catholic bishop of the Diocese of Honolulu celebrated Mass on Sunday at a church in Kapalua — just up the road from fire-ravaged Lahaina — and urged those reeling from the wildfire not to give...

Alcantara’s yo-yo season rolls on with dominant five-hitter against Yankees in Marlins’ win
MIAMI — Sandy Alcantara threw a complete-game five-hitter, Luis Arraez homered and the Miami Marlins beat the New York Yankees 3-1 on Saturday.
Alcantara (5-10) struck out 10 in his major league-leading third complete game and first home win since going the distance against Minnesota on April 4. The reigning NL Cy Young Award winner coaxed 11 groundouts before a season-best crowd of 33,980.
“Today was as good as you’ve seen him,” Marlins manager Skip Schumaker said. “Maybe the Twins game matches that, but where we are in the season for him to do that, it was a really impressive outing at a...
Hurricanes flip blue-chip defensive lineman Elias Rudolph from Michigan
The Hurricanes and defensive line coach Jason Taylor tried to land defensive end Elias Rudolph before he committed in July, but Michigan was the blue-chip prospect’s preferred destination.
But now Rudolph has changed his mind. The four-star defensive end flipped from Michigan to Miami on Saturday night, announcing his decision on social media. His commitment comes just one day after the Hurricanes landed their first 2025 commit, quarterback Luke Nickel.
Rudolph, who plays for Taft High in Cincinnati, is rated the No. 21 edge rusher and No. 292 player in the 2024 class. He is listed at 6-4...
Lionel Messi quiet (by his standards), but Inter Miami roll, advance to Leagues Cup semifinals
FORT LAUDERDALE — Lionel Messi almost didn’t score for the first time in an Inter Miami uniform.
The international superstar played all 90 minutes Friday night, but he rarely provided any threatening moments nor a jaw-dropping play like he had in each of his first four Inter Miami games. Besides the extra buzz in the stadium whenever he touched the ball, Messi looked human.
But even so, he still found his way on the scoresheet in the match’s final minutes on a tap-in goal for good measure. The match was all but over at that point, as Inter Miami grinded to a 4-0 victory over Charlotte FC at...
