UCF lands commitment from 4-star running back Frankie Arthur

UCF continues to build on one of its best recruiting classes in program history with the verbal commitment of Texas running back Frankie Arthur Monday. The Oak Ridge (Texas) High product is the 15th player to pledge to the Knights’ 2024 class. All verbal commitments are non-binding but can become official during the early signing period in December. Arthur is the No. 111 overall player in the class, according to 247Sports’ composite rankings, and the fifth-best running back in the country. His commitment, along with that of Stacy Gage (23), gives UCF two top-25 running backs in their 2024...

Joey Votto, Reds hand Marlins their fifth straight loss

By JEFF WALLNER CINCINNATI — Christian Encarnacion-Strand and Joey Votto homered on consecutive pitches by Eury Pérez in the fourth inning, and the Cincinnati Reds stopped a six-game slide by holding off the Miami Marlins for a 5-2 victory on Monday night. TJ Friedl had two hits and two RBIs as Cincinnati improved to 10-14 since the All-Star break. The six-game slide matched the season high for the Reds (60-55), who remain in the thick of the playoff race. “We’ve got less than two months to go,” Votto said. “Everybody is going to contribute. We’re going to need everybody to contribute. I’d...

‘Cross that bridge next year’: Malzahn focused on UCF camp, not realignment

In the past week, the future of college athletics changed in a quick and dramatic direction. Pac-12 members Oregon and Washington announced their plans to join the Big Ten next year while Arizona, Utah and Arizona State finalized their move with Colorado to the Big 12 Conference. For UCF coach Gus Malzahn, it was just another week of football practice. “I’m coaching my team,” Malzahn said Sunday when asked about the recent additions to the Big 12. “You wake up and there’s something new.” It’s unclear what the future holds for the remaining Pac-12 schools — Oregon State, Washington State,...

US loses to Sweden on penalty kicks in its earliest Women’s World Cup exit ever

By ANNE M. PETERSON (AP Sports Writer) MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — The United States played its best game of this Women’s World Cup and it wasn’t good enough to stop the two-time reigning champions from being eliminated in the round of 16. The Americans’ bid to win an unprecedented third consecutive title ended Sunday on penalty kicks. It is the earliest exit in tournament history for the United States, four-time winners of the World Cup. Megan Rapinoe, Sophia Smith and Kelley O’Hara missed with kicks from the penalty spot before Lina Hurtig converted to clinch the shootout 5-4 as Sweden...

Alcantara yields three home runs, Marlins get shut out as Rangers sweep

ARLINGTON, Texas — The Texas Rangers slugged four homers and swept a six-game homestand with a 6-0 win over the Miami Marlins on Sunday in a game in which they lost standout rookie third baseman Josh Jung with a fractured thumb. Nathaniel Lowe, Marcus Semien, Ezequiel Duran and Adolis Garcia homered while Andrew Heaney allowed four singles in 5 2/3 shutout innings. The six-game winning streak and four homers matched Texas highs this season. The Rangers, who went into play leading the major leagues averaging 5.78 runs per game, have hit multiple homers in six consecutive games to match a...

Chris Perkins: I’m still adjusting to the refreshing honesty of Dolphins defensive coordinator Vic Fangio

MIAMI GARDENS — We’re still getting to know Dolphins defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, but he turned heads once again Friday when he listed the shortcomings for his defense. I have no problem with Fangio’s candor. In fact, I like it. But I thought the defense, which had a good day in Saturday’s scrimmage, was coming along pretty well, and showing some promising depth. Fangio’s media session on Friday, however, caused questions to start creeping into my thoughts about this defense. Coach Mike McDaniel isn’t concerned about his defense or Fangio’s candor. “When we were fortunate enough to...

Marlins rally comes up short as free fall back toward .500 continues in Texas

ARLINGTON, Texas — Rookie Josh Jung hit the third of three multi-run home runs for Texas in the middle innings and the Rangers overcame a 5-0 deficit to beat the Miami Marlins 9-8 on Saturday for their fifth consecutive victory. Robbie Grossman hit a three-run homer in the fourth, and Corey Seager had a two-run homer in the fifth preceding Jung’s first-pitch, two-run shot. Jon Gray (7-5) earned his first victory since June 2, allowing five runs — three earned — on six hits and two walks. Gray pitched on 11 days of rest, missing his previous rotation turn with lingering effects of a liner...

Dolphins CB Noah Igbinoghene could finally be coming around in new scheme; Isaiah Wynn talks guard play

MIAMI GARDENS — The Miami Dolphins will need cornerbacks to surface this training camp after the devastating blow of Jalen Ramsey’s left knee injury and surgery. While they signed a veteran in Eli Apple and are hopeful second-round draft pick Cam Smith can emerge quickly, what if the forgotten Noah Igbinoghene, the 2020 first-round pick, could finally be the one to produce? He has gotten a greater opportunity in camp following Ramsey’s injury, and at Saturday’s scrimmage at Hard Rock Stadium, he had an interception of quarterback Tua Tagovailoa while defending star wideout Tyreek Hill. “I...

Rangers’ Garcia goes deep twice as reeling Marlins sink to five games over .500 for first time in two months

ARLINGTON, Texas — Adolis García hit two drastically different solo homers, Corey Seager also went deep and newly acquired left-hander Jordan Montgomery worked into the seventh inning to help the Texas Rangers beat the Miami Marlins 6-2 on Friday night. Garcia put the Rangers ahead to stay when he went the opposite way with a high-arching 334-foot homer just inside the right-field pole for a 3-2 lead in the third. In the sixth, the slugger known as “El Bombi” hit a 433-foot drive that landed in the second deck of seats above the visitors bullpen in left-center. His 27th and 28th homers of...

2 Palestinians killed in separate episodes in latest West Bank violence

By JULIA FRANKEL (Associated Press) JERUSALEM (AP) — Israeli security forces killed an 18-year-old Palestinian during a military raid into the northern West Bank on Friday, Palestinian health officials said, while another Palestinian was killed when Israeli settlers stormed a village and sparked fighting with residents. The deaths marked the latest bloodshed in a monthslong surge of violence that has gripped the occupied West Bank. The Palestinian Health Ministry said that Mahmoud Abu Saan, 18, was shot in the head by Israeli forces in the city of Tulkarem. The raid drew protests from...
