A driver was met with a spray of bullets while merging onto Interstate 95 in Oakland Park during Friday morning rush hour, according to Florida Highway Patrol. A little before 9 a.m., FHP received a call about a “possible road rage incident resulting in a shooting,” according to a media release. The driver was merging onto the highway from Oakland Park Boulevard in a gray Chevy, heading north, when a person inside a black Honda Civic with a temporary license plate shot at the Chevy multiple times, hitting the passenger side. The shooter then fled. The driver survived largely unscathed, but had...

A jury in Washington, D.C., found Tarrio and three lieutenants guilty of seditious conspiracy after hearing from dozens of witnesses over more than three months in one of the most serious cases brought in the stunning attack that...

Debt limit deadline looms as Democrats, GOP spar on spending

By KEVIN FREKING (Associated Press) WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate Democrats pressured Republicans on the increasingly menacing debt ceiling impasse Thursday, focusing on what they say will be painful reductions in government services if a bill the GOP recently pushed through the House becomes law. Republicans responded that they know the legal limit on government borrowing must be raised to avert a possible default. But they’re insisting it be coupled with cuts in what they consider bloated federal spending. No one expects that the House bill, which would increase the nation’s borrowing authority...

County Commission votes on GL Homes swap

A controversial land swap that would enable the development of 1,000 luxury homes in Palm Beach County’s Agricultural Reserve received initial support from the Board of Commissioners Wednesday night. The 5-2 vote was a major victory for GL Homes, one of the leading residential developers in Palm Beach County. It also signals a major change to the Ag Reserve, which county voters overwhelmingly agreed in 1999 to keep mostly rural. The approval now goes to the state for review and will come back to the commission Aug. 30 for final adoption. “We are pleased the Palm Beach County Commission saw merit...

Albies, Ozuna lead Braves’ pummeling of Garrett, Marlins

Marcell Ozuna hit a grand slam among his two home runs, Ronald Acuña Jr also homered and the Atlanta Braves went deep six times to roll past the Miami Marlins 14-6 on Wednesday night. Acuña’s three-run shot to center field in the fifth inning was his sixth home run of the season and made it 11-4 before Austin Riley homered to left-center to add two more runs. Only the Tampa Bay Rays and Los Angeles Dodgers have recorded more home runs so far this season than the Braves (52). Acuña, April’s National League player of the month, has powered Atlanta (21-10) at the plate. He’s hitting .358 and leads...

By JUAN A. LOZANO and NOMAAN MERCHANT (Associated Press) CLEVELAND, Texas (AP) — A man suspected of killing five of his neighbors in Texas after they asked him to stop shooting his gun near their house hid out just miles away from the slayings while he and his domestic partner plotted his escape to Mexico, authorities said Wednesday. Francisco Oropeza showered and slept at the house outside the city of Conroe on Tuesday while Divimara Lamar Nava got him donuts from a nearby store, a prosecutor said. Lamar Nava also acknowledged delivering a message from Oropeza to his cousins in the area asking...

Heat fight the good fight in injury absence of Butler, fall 111-105 to Knicks

NEW YORK – It was the leading men against the replacements. Julius Randle, Jalen Brunson and R.J. Barrett were in place for the New York Knicks. Jimmy Butler, Tyler Herro and Victor Oladipo were out for the Miami Heat. No, not optimal, the Heat ailing and the Knicks healing as the teams headed into Tuesday night’s Game 2 of this best-of-seven Eastern Conference semifinal series. Still, even with the Knicks moving to a 111-105 victory at Madison Square Garden and a 1-1 series tie, it was a game that showed what the Heat have in support of Butler, who well could be back from his sprained right...

Oklahoma woman: Sex offender controlled my daughter’s family

By SEAN MURPHY (Associated Press) HENRYETTA, Okla. (AP) — As law enforcement officials went silent Tuesday while piecing together what led to the killing of seven people in rural Oklahoma, family members of those slain recalled the controlling nature of one of the dead, who was a registered sex offender. Since the bodies were found early Monday, authorities have released scant information on who was killed, how they died and who killed them. But two relatives said all the victims were shot to death. Janette Mayo, whose daughter and three teenage grandchildren were among the dead, said the controlling...

Winderman’s view: It could have been Adebayo’s night; instead, a Heat loss

NEW YORK — Observations and other notes of interest from Tuesday night’s 111-105 NBA playoff loss to the New York Knicks: – It could have been a Bam Adebayo game for the Heat. – And perhaps, in his own way, it was. – The issue with Adebayo, at least with this roster, hasn’t been about such an immediate ascension. – The leading man is in place, even if absent Tuesday night. – So even with Jimmy Butler out, coach Erik Spoelstra stressed perspective, at least when it came to Tuesday’s expectations. – “They don’t change dramatically,” Spoelstra said of Adebayo. “He doesn’t need to score 50 for us...
