By JAKE OFFENHARTZ and MICHAEL R. SISAK (Associated Press) CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (AP) — U.S. Rep. George Santos, infamous for fabricating his life story, pleaded not guilty Wednesday to charges he duped donors, stole from his campaign and lied to Congress about being a millionaire, all while cheating to collect unemployment benefits he didn’t deserve. Afterward, he said he wouldn’t drop his reelection bid and defied calls to resign. Santos’ 13-count federal indictment was a reckoning for a web of fraud and deceit that prosecutors say overlapped with the New York Republican’s fantastical public...

Hyde5: Panthers must wait, as Toronto’s ‘Core Four’ get on board to avoid sweep

When Matthew Tkachuk’s shot slid free behind Toronto goalie Joseph Woll midway through the third period and Sam Reinhart shoved it in the net, the question if it would be the start of another Florida Panthers’ comeback that’s defined their playoff path. Not this game. Not this night. Not against a Toronto team that survived with a 2-1 win Wednesday night to get the series back to Canada for Friday’s Game 5. It’s still the Panthers series, up 3-1. And the fact only four NHL teams have ever rallied from an 0-3 deficit remains relevant. There’s a crack of hope for Toronto, though. The Panthers,...

BSO detective accused of not fully investigating sex crimes, threatening a victim with deportation

A veteran Broward Sheriff’s detective was arrested Tuesday on charges of official misconduct and extortion after an investigation found he had falsified information in numerous sex crime cases and closed the cases without fully investigating them, the Sheriff’s Office said. Det. Demetrious Campbell, 48, has been with the Sheriff’s Office since 2002. He is now suspended without pay, and investigators are reviewing many of his cases, Veda Coleman-Wright, a spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Office, said in a news release Tuesday evening. Concerns about Campbell surfaced in early April after a sexual...

Lawmakers and their...

Jury finds Trump liable for sexual abuse, awards accuser $5M

By LARRY NEUMEISTER, JENNIFER PELTZ and MICHAEL R. SISAK (Associated Press) NEW YORK (AP) — A jury found Donald Trump liable Tuesday for sexually abusing advice columnist E. Jean Carroll in 1996, awarding her $5 million in a judgment that could haunt the former president as he campaigns to regain the White House. The verdict was split: Jurors rejected Carroll’s claim that she was raped, finding Trump responsible for a lesser degree of sexual abuse. The judgment adds to Trump’s legal woes and offers vindication to Carroll, whose allegations had been mocked and dismissed by Trump for years. She...
