MIAMI – Observations and other notes of interest from Wednesday night’s 103-102 victory over the Detroit Pistons at Kaseya Center:
– Yes, there is no such thing as must-win in the first of 82 regular-season games.
– And yet based on what now follows, a three-game trip to Boston, Minnesota (on the second night of a back-to-back) and Milwaukee, this was needed.
– And necessary.
– Because it will be interesting to see how the Heat handle the Boston-Minnesota back-to-back when starting a trio of 30-somethings.
– As expected, Heat coach Erik Spoelstra opened with a lineup of Bam Adebayo, Kevin Love,...

SUNRISE — Sam Reinhart extended his goal streak to five games, helping the Florida Panthers to a 3-1 win over the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday night.
Reinhart, Carter Verhaeghe and Kevin Stenlund each scored for the Panthers (3-3-0), who were without captain Aleksander Barkov because of an illness. Anthony Stolarz made 27 saves in his Florida debut.
Fabian Zetterlund scored for the Sharks. Mackenzie Blackwood made 32 saves.
At 0-5-1, San Jose has matched the worst six-game start in franchise history. The Sharks also went 0-5-1 for one point through six games in 1993-94 — part of what...
Palm Beach County commissioners voted 4-3 not to adopt GL Homes’ land-swap proposal Tuesday during a fierce meeting that endured for more than 10 hours of presentations, deliberations and an estimated 80-plus people speaking during public comment.
The final decision was met with applause from those who remained in the crowd, about half of the people present Tuesday morning.
“We are deeply disappointed by Palm Beach County Board of Commissioners’ decision today. Our public-private partnership would have provided desperately needed solutions to water quality, workforce housing, Jewish community...

DETROIT (AP) — First it was Ford, then Stellantis, and now a General Motors factory has been added to the growing list of highly profitable plants where the United Auto Workers union is on strike.
On Tuesday, about 5,000 workers walked out at GM’s factory in Arlington, Texas, that makes big, high margin SUVs such as the Chevrolet Tahoe and Cadillac Escalade.
The strikes in Texas, as well as at the largest Ford factory in the world in Louisville, Kentucky, and a Stellantis plant that makes lucrative Ram pickups in Michigan, are aimed at getting the companies to...
Florida has some momentum coming off a bye week while Billy Napier’s beleaguered offense showed promise during wins against Vanderbilt and South Carolina. The Gators now prepare for a massive step up against their rival Bulldogs, winners of 24 straight including a pair of one-sided wins against UF. Kirby Smart’s team will be without star tight end Brock Bowers while his defense is not as formidable as recent editions. Yet the Dawgs remain the SEC’s gold standard and the Gators’ toughest test. During the latest Swamp Things, Mark and Edgar discuss Florida’s upset chances and Napier’s continued...
The Promise program, an initiative that was once heralded for keeping kids out of jail but got tarnished as a symbol of leniency in the wake of the Parkland tragedy, is ending after a decade in Broward schools.
The School Board voted last week to approve the updated student Code of Conduct, which eliminates referrals to the Promise program as an action that can avoid a student getting suspended or arrested for non-violent misdemeanor offenses, such as vandalism, petty theft and marijuana possession.
But while the name Promise will no longer be associated with the school district, the intervention...
MIAMI GARDENS — The Miami Dolphins had 12 carries for 45 yards against the Philadelphia Eagles. You decide which number is more objectionable.
Miami’s inability and/or reluctance to run resulted in a one-dimensional, predictable offense, and the Eagles took advantage in Miami’s 31-17 loss on Sunday.
“Probably the biggest opportunities we squandered happened to be in the run game,” coach Mike McDaniel said.
The bad thing is Miami entered the game No. 1 in rushing at 181.8 yards per game.
Philadelphia sacked quarterback Tua Tagovailoa three times (he’d only been sacked six times in the previous...
PHILADELPHIA — Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa almost seems like a completely different person in a second season under coach Mike McDaniel than he was his first two NFL campaigns with Brian Flores at the helm.
Ahead of Sunday night’s prime-time showdown against the Philadelphia Eagles, Tagovailoa opened up this past week in an interview with NBC about the freedom he’s operating with in McDaniel’s system and how it transcends to happiness on and off the field.
“I would describe the place that I’m at professionally as fun and happy,” Tagovailoa said in the interview. “Fun because I’m...
