GATORS PODCAST: UF ready for top-ranked Georgia as 15.5-point underdogs (Ep. 194)

Florida has some momentum coming off a bye week while Billy Napier’s beleaguered offense showed promise during wins against Vanderbilt and South Carolina. The Gators now prepare for a massive step up against their rival Bulldogs, winners of 24 straight including a pair of one-sided wins against UF. Kirby Smart’s team will be without star tight end Brock Bowers while his defense is not as formidable as recent editions. Yet the Dawgs remain the SEC’s gold standard and the Gators’ toughest test. During the latest Swamp Things, Mark and Edgar discuss Florida’s upset chances and Napier’s continued...

Controversial Promise program is ending in Broward schools. Here is what’s planned.

The Promise program, an initiative that was once heralded for keeping kids out of jail but got tarnished as a symbol of leniency in the wake of the Parkland tragedy, is ending after a decade in Broward schools. The School Board voted last week to approve the updated student Code of Conduct, which eliminates referrals to the Promise program as an action that can avoid a student getting suspended or arrested for non-violent misdemeanor offenses, such as vandalism, petty theft and marijuana possession. But while the name Promise will no longer be associated with the school district, the intervention...

Dolphins’ run game struggled in Philadelphia, and the devil is in the details

MIAMI GARDENS — The Miami Dolphins had 12 carries for 45 yards against the Philadelphia Eagles. You decide which number is more objectionable. Miami’s inability and/or reluctance to run resulted in a one-dimensional, predictable offense, and the Eagles took advantage in Miami’s 31-17 loss on Sunday. “Probably the biggest opportunities we squandered happened to be in the run game,” coach Mike McDaniel said. The bad thing is Miami entered the game No. 1 in rushing at 181.8 yards per game. Philadelphia sacked quarterback Tua Tagovailoa three times (he’d only been sacked six times in the previous...

Dolphins’ Tua in ‘fun and happy’ place under McDaniel; plus, a key reason for Jalen Ramsey’s swift recovery

PHILADELPHIA — Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa almost seems like a completely different person in a second season under coach Mike McDaniel than he was his first two NFL campaigns with Brian Flores at the helm. Ahead of Sunday night’s prime-time showdown against the Philadelphia Eagles, Tagovailoa opened up this past week in an interview with NBC about the freedom he’s operating with in McDaniel’s system and how it transcends to happiness on and off the field. “I would describe the place that I’m at professionally as fun and happy,” Tagovailoa said in the interview. “Fun because I’m...

Heat turn focus to regular season after loss in exhibition finale in Houston

The Miami Heat’s exhibition finale was more like half of an exhibition, with coach Erik Spoelstra pulling all five of Friday night’s starters at halftime of the 110-104 loss to the Houston Rockets at Toyota Center. And even the first half hardly was the whole Heat, with Jimmy Butler making it an entire preseason without action, back in Miami following a dental procedure. Still, even in closing the preseason at 2-3, Spoelstra felt tangible progress was achieved. “I thought we had a really good camp,” he said. “I thought we’ve been able to get a lot of things accomplished. Different guys at different...
