DeSantis appoints Kevin Tynan, Judge Catalina Avalos to 17th Judicial Circuit openings

Gov. Ron DeSantis has appointed former School Board member Kevin Tynan and Judge Catalina Avalos to fill two vacancies in the 17th Judicial Circuit in Broward County. Tynan will step into the role that was left open when Circuit Judge Elizabeth Scherer, who presided over the trial of the gunman who murdered 17 students and teachers at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland in 2018, resigned earlier this year. Avalos, who has served as a county judge since 2022, will fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Circuit Judge Dale Cohen, the governor’s office said in a news release...

‘You’re going to waltz right in’: Randy Fine talks of how FAU presidential bid fizzled out

State Rep. Randy Fine applied for the job of Florida Atlantic University president after the governor’s office assured him he was a shoo-in, only to discover those at FAU had other plans, the lawmaker said. Fine gave his first detailed account about his role in FAU’s search for a new leader in a phone interview Thursday with the South Florida Sun Sentinel. Gov. Ron DeSantis’ office said in March that Fine would make a good president of FAU, but the decision was ultimately up to a search committee and Board of Trustees at FAU. When the search committee announced three finalists July 5 for the...

MIAMI – Observations and other notes of interest from Wednesday night’s 103-102 victory over the Detroit Pistons at Kaseya Center: – Yes, there is no such thing as must-win in the first of 82 regular-season games. – And yet based on what now follows, a three-game trip to Boston, Minnesota (on the second night of a back-to-back) and Milwaukee, this was needed. – And necessary. – Because it will be interesting to see how the Heat handle the Boston-Minnesota back-to-back when starting a trio of 30-somethings. – As expected, Heat coach Erik Spoelstra opened with a lineup of Bam Adebayo, Kevin Love,...

UAW strikes at General Motors plant in Texas as union goes after automakers’ cash cows

By TOM KRISHER (AP Auto Writer) DETROIT (AP) — First it was Ford, then Stellantis, and now a General Motors factory has been added to the growing list of highly profitable plants where the United Auto Workers union is on strike. On Tuesday, about 5,000 workers walked out at GM’s factory in Arlington, Texas, that makes big, high margin SUVs such as the Chevrolet Tahoe and Cadillac Escalade. The strikes in Texas, as well as at the largest Ford factory in the world in Louisville, Kentucky, and a Stellantis plant that makes lucrative Ram pickups in Michigan, are aimed at getting the companies to...
