National champion Gators to visit Duke in ACC/SEC Challenge

GAINESVILLE — Defending national champion Florida will visit powerhouse Duke next December during the annual ACC/SEC Challenge. The Orlando Sentinel confirmed the Gators and Blue Devils will square off either Dec. 2 or 3. Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports first reported the matchup of the two 2025 Final Four participants and winners of a combined eight national titles, including three for UF — the latest a 65-63 come-from-behind win against Houston April 7 in San Antonio. The game is the latest high-profile matchup on Florida’s 2025-26 schedule. The Gators will kick off their national title...

Sandy Alcantara pitches 6 shutout innings, Marlins edge Pirates

PITTSBURGH — Sandy Alcantara struck out six in six shutout innings, and the Miami Marlins edged the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-2 on Tuesday night. Alcantara (3-7) allowed three hits and walked one in his first win since April 12. The 2022 NL Cy Young Award winner went 0-7 with a 9.07 ERA in his previous nine starts. Calvin Faucher worked around a two-on, no-out jam in the ninth for his fifth save as the Marlins won for just the second time in nine games. Nick Fortes hit his second homer of the season for Miami, a two-run shot off Mitch Keller (1-9) in the third. Eric Wagaman added two hits for...

Panthers’ power play finally comes through at home in Game 3 vs. Oilers

SUNRISE — As impressive as the Florida Panthers’ third consecutive run through the Stanley Cup playoffs has been, it’s been accompanied by an inexplicable statistical oddity. The Panthers could not get the puck in the net on the power play at home. They entered Monday night’s Game 3 1 for 28 (3.6 percent) on the power play in playoff games at Amerant Bank Arena through three rounds. Florida apparently just needed the stakes to be a little higher. The Panthers scored twice on the power play Monday as they took a 2-1 series lead against the Edmonton Oilers. The drought was snapped when...

Eury Perez loses first start since 2023 as Bryan Reynolds leads Pirates over Marlins

By JOHN PERROTTO PITTSBURGH — Bryan Reynolds hit a bases-loaded triple to cap a four-run third inning and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the skidding Miami Marlins 10-3 on Monday night for their season-high fourth straight win. Reynolds put the Pirates ahead 4-1 with a line drive to the gap in right-center field off Eury Perez (0-1), who was making his first major league start since Sept. 20, 2023, after recovering from Tommy John surgery. Reynolds’ hit came after Andrew McCutchen had an RBI infield single. All nine Pirates had hits, and McCutchen and Adam Frazier paced a 15-hit attack with...

UCF football add a pair of 2026 commitments in Kaj Baker, Isaiah McNish

It was a busy Sunday for UCF football, which secured a pair of verbal commitments for its 2026 recruiting class from Somerset Academy Charter running back Kaj Baker and Wekiva High defensive lineman Isaiah McNish. The duo pledged to the Knights after taking official visits to the school this weekend. The 5-foot-7 Baker is a 3-star athlete from Pembroke Pines who amassed 1,653 yards of total all-purpose yards for the Panthers last season, including 520 rushing yards, 756 receiving yards and 377 yards on kickoff and punt returns with 18 total touchdowns. He had 18 offers from schools such as...

Dave Hyde: Aaron Ekblad, a Panthers lifer on edge of free agency — ‘I bleed for the Florida Panthers’

It’s not the baby faces or different hair Aaron Ekblad mentions about a photo from his 2014 draft, the one passed around the Florida Panthers’ plane before this Stanley Cup Final of that year’s top four picks, in order: Ekblad, Leon Draisaitl, Sam Reinhart and Sam Bennett. “We were all laughing about how bad our shoes were,’’ he said. The chances of the four top picks having big careers is rare. Three of them being Panthers is rarer still and speaks of the assembling of talent on this team. And meeting the fourth, Draisaitl, the star Edmonton forward, for a second straight final?...

‘Canes drubbed in the opener of Super Regionals at Louisville, face elimination

The Miami Hurricanes have not been to the College World Series in almost a decade. They’ll need to win consecutive games if they’re to end that drought this year. The Hurricanes were blown out 8-1 by the Louisville Cardinals in the opening game of the NCAA super regionals Friday afternoon at Jim Patterson Stadium in Louisville, Kentucky. Now facing elimination, Miami will have to win back-to-back games over the Cardinals to advance to Omaha for the first time since 2016. Game two of the best-of-three series will be played Saturday at 11 a.m. at Jim Patterson Stadium in Louisville. The...

Appeals court upholds injunction blocking Florida law targeting undocumented immigrants

TALLAHASSEE — A federal appeals court Friday kept on hold a new Florida law targeting undocumented immigrants who enter the state, rejecting arguments by Attorney General James Uthmeier that enforcement should at least temporarily be allowed. U.S. District Judge Kathleen Williams in April issued a preliminary injunction to block the law, which she said was likely preempted by federal immigration authority. Uthmeier appealed the injunction to the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals and asked for a stay of Williams’ ruling. Such a stay could have allowed the law to be enforced while the legal...

Man charged with defrauding grieving Broward family out of $1 million home

Two months after a father of four died, a man filed a fake deed in his name to take ownership of his $1 million Pembroke Pines home, officials say. He is now facing felony charges. Armando Porto Del Sol, of Miami Gardens, was arrested Thursday in Miami and charged with multiple felonies: grand theft in the first degree, fraudulent use of personal identification information, criminal use of deceased personal identification information and unlawful filing of false documents, according to the Broward Property Appraiser. The arrest came after a combined effort between the Property Appraiser’s...

Dave Hyde: It’s hockey hell in Edmonton — just how the Panthers usually thrive

EDMONTON — There again will be thousands of fans outside the Rogers Place cheering in a plaza Friday night. A horn section at one end of the arena again won’t be heard sometimes over arena’s relentless noise. A fan will again hold up a sign, “SERGEI,” to signal it’s time to serenade Panthers goalie Sergei Bobrovsky. “Seeer-geeeeei!” the crowd will chant. Sometimes, during the half-second’s lull in that chant, a sub-chorus will sound. “We want the Cup!” Yes, it will be hockey heaven again in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup Final, as electric a championship venue as there is in all of sports....
