Gators’ Billy Napier, SEC brethren brace for roster reckoning after NCAA settlement

GAINESVILLE — Florida Gators football coach Billy Napier and his brethren have been bracing for a roster reckoning spurred by the House v. NCAA antitrust settlement. The landmark legislation went into effect Tuesday, but sweeping changes remained on the horizon, not yet at the doorstep. With fall camp scheduled to start at month’s end, Napier’s roster stands at 117 players — a dozen above the proposed future limit of 105. “When we got the job, there were certain parameters around how you build your roster. We proceeded that way,” Napier said at the SEC Spring Meetings on May 28 in Destin....

Panthers’ draft picks, prospects eye future with team at player development camp

FORT LAUDERDALE — To say his last 48 hours have been a whirlwind would be an understatement. Mads Kongsbak Klyvo — the Danish forward taken No. 112 by the Florida Panthers in the fourth round of the NHL draft — was at home in Denmark, gathered around the TV with his family, when he heard his name called on Saturday afternoon. Just 48 hours later, the 18 year old was on the ice in Fort Lauderdale. “It’s been pretty overwhelming,” Klyvo said on Monday after the Panthers’ first practice of player development camp. “I got a call quite quickly after the draft, and then we figured out a flight to...

By DAVID BRANDT PHOENIX — Otto Lopez hit a go-ahead, two-run single and Kyle Stowers added a three-run double during an eighth-inning rally and the Miami Marlins completed a three-game sweep by beating the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-4 on Sunday. The streaking Marlins have won seven in a row. The Diamondbacks took a 2-1 lead into the eighth inning, but lefty Jalen Beeks walked the bases loaded with two outs. Lopez then hit a line drive into left that scored Liam Hicks and Dane Myers for a 3-2 lead. Agustin Ramirez was intentionally walked to load the bases again and Stowers hit a bases-clearing...

Bayern will face reigning Champions League winner Paris Saint-Germain, which eliminated Inter Miami on Sunday, in the quarterfinals in Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Saturday. Superstar forward Harry Kane scored Bayern’s second and fourth goals of the match, giving his club an insurance goal...

By JOHN MARSHALL PHOENIX  — Agustín Ramírez hit a run-scoring single in the 10th inning, Heriberto Hernández had a tying sacrifice fly in the ninth and the Miami Marlins stretched their winning streak to six games with an 8-7 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday. Arizona led 7-3 entering the eighth inning, but Miami’s Otto Lopez hit a two-run homer off Jalen Beeks and Liam Hicks followed with a run-scoring single to pull Miami to 7-6. Hernández tied it in ninth on a sacrifice fly off Shelby Miller after Dane Myers singled and stole two bases. Ramírez lined a run-scoring single...

UF football position preview: Cornerbacks

GAINESVILLE — The ninth in a position-by-position preview of the UF football team leading up to the opening of fall camp. TODAY: CORNERBACK What to expect The Gators’ longstanding claim to DBU, the fictional Defensive Backs University, has become empty words. A program that churned out three NFL first-rounders at cornerback and four second-rounders from 2016-22 has sent one to the NFL in three years — fifth-rounder Jason Marshall Jr. in 2025. UF corners did make some statistical strides in 2024, finishing with 4 interceptions after managing just one in ’23 and cutting the average yards per...

Heat go without selection in Thursday night’s second round of NBA draft; roster set or fluid?

MIAMI — As expected, the Miami Heat sat out Thursday night’s second round of the NBA draft, after entering the night without a selection. The Heat had the ability to purchase a selection, but, by rule, by sending out cash in such a transaction it would have hard-capped the team at the second-apron of the NBA luxury tax for the entire 2025-26 season. Instead, next up is the free-for-all that follows the draft as teams stock summer rosters with undrafted free agents. The Heat pick in Thursday night’s second round was dealt in 2019 to the Indiana Pacers as part of a package of three future...

Gators backcourt trifecta complete as Alijah Martin, Will Richard drafted in 2nd round

GAINESVILLE — Florida guard Alijah Martin was positioned for a good night when the NBA invited him to the green room for the second round of the draft. The odds backcourt mate Will Richard would hear his name called were not nearly as favorable. By night’s end, the Gators’ national championship backcourt completed the trifecta. Martin didn’t have to wait too long Thursday night at the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn, landing with the Toronto Raptors just nine picks into the second round in the No. 39 spot. With four picks to go in two-round, 60-player event, Richard landed with the Golden...

Emotional Walter Clayton Jr. selected No. 18 in NBA draft, headed to Utah

GAINESVILLE — UF All-American guard Walter Clayton Jr. was cool-headed and in control on his way to a national championship, but the 22-year-old let the tears flow Wednesday night as his NBA dream became reality. In a head-spinning turn of events for one of the draft’s fastest-rising players, Clayton was selected with the No. 18 pick by the Washington Wizards, who promptly traded Clayton to the Utah Jazz. Clayton rose into first-round consideration after a spectacular, national championship senior season with the Gators. As the draft neared, his stock continued to climb. Clayton attended...
