Carolina started Game 5 the way it played in Game 4. By the end of the first period, the Hurricanes led 2-0, giving fans at the Lenovo Center hope that their team might be capable of an epic comeback after falling behind 3-0 in the best-of-seven series.
The Panthers slammed the door on that, crushing that hope with a three-goal flurry in the second period and a game-winner in the third period. The offensive blizzard put Florida ahead 3-2, and Carter Verhaeghe scored the game-winner late in the third period for the Panthers in their 5-3, Eastern Conference-clinching effort in Raleigh, North...
Panthers forward Eetu Luostarinen leaves Game 5 vs. Carolina with injury
Florida forward Eetu Luostarinen suffered an injury and will not return to Wednesday’s Game 5 against Carolina, the Panthers announced.
Luostarinen, going for a hit against the boards, missed and struggled to keep his balance on the ice immediately after. He did not return to the bench for the second period. The Panthers did not disclose the nature of his injury.
Luostarinen, a key defensive forward, has been an effective offensive player on the Panthers’ third line during the playoffs. The 26-year-old forward has four goals and nine assists in the postseason. He entered Game 5 against the...
Billy Napier says Gators QB DJ Lagway ‘on schedule,’ enduring normal offseason workload
SANDESTIN — Florida quarterback DJ Lagway is throwing three times a week and is “on schedule,” coach Billy Napier said, as the Gators sophomore recovers from an injury that prevented him from passing during spring practices.
Speaking at the SEC Spring Meetings, Napier said Lagway threw Tuesday on UF’s campus and is making 210 passes a week, not counting his warm-up — or the normal workload for a Gators quarterback.
“We’re doing exactly what we would do this time of year that we’ve done in the past,” Napier said. “So he’s on schedule.”
Lagway did not throw during the spring practices and...
Short-handed Panthers fall to Hurricanes, who avoid conference final sweep
SUNRISE — Hurricanes Rod Brind’Amour infamously said that Carolina “didn’t lose four games,” when the Hurricanes lost four consecutive one-goal games and lost the conference final to the Florid Panthers in 2023.
This time, he is definitely correct that the Hurricanes did not get swept.
After going down 3-0 in the series to the Panthers, Carolina notched its first victory with a 3-0 win over a short-handed Florida at Amerant Bank Arena Monday night. The victory snaps a 15-game conference final losing streak for the franchise.
The Hurricanes played their best game of the series, and they came...
Boat explodes at Fort Lauderdale sandbar, injuring nine adults and two children
A boat exploded at a sandbar in Fort Lauderdale’s Intracoastal Waterway on Memorial Day, severely injuring nine adults and two children, officials said Monday night.
The explosion happened at about 5:45 p.m., May 26, at a sandbar off the Lauderdale Yacht Club at 1725 SE 12th St., just south of where the New River and the Intracoastal meet, according to Frank Guzman, public information officer for Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue.
The area is popular because the shallow water at the sandbar allows boaters to anchor their vessels at low tide and wade into the water. Low tide Monday came at about...
Bats awaken as UF softball beats Georgia to return to College World Series
GAINESVILLE — Florida freshman slugger Taylor Shumaker ended her weekend slump in record-setting fashion but not before shortstop Rylee Holtorf showed why the Gators will be a tough out during the Women’s College World Series.
A surprising 2-run homer from Holtorf in the lineup’s No. 9 spot broke open a 1-0 game with Georgia in the fifth inning and set the stage for Shumaker’s 2-run blast two batters later to carry UF to a 5-2 win Sunday and back to the College World Series for the 13th time under Tim Walton — and third appearance since 2022.
“That’s why I made the decision to come to...

Panthers’ explosive third period seals Game 3 vs. Hurricanes, setting up potential sweep
SUNRISE — Jesper Boqvist had a tall task: Fill in for the Panthers’ leading goalscorer, Sam Reinhart, on the team’s top line after Reinhart was ruled out with an injury.
Boqvist did his best Reinhart impersonation, scoring the go-ahead goal in the third period to put the Panthers up 2-1. Little did he know that his teammates would soon join in on the fun.
Florida scored five times in rapid succession in the third period, beating Carolina 6-2 and taking Game 3 at Amerant Bank Arena on Saturday. The loss puts the Hurricanes on the brink of elimination. Florida can sweep Carolina — like it did...
