A month later, it was an NBA Finals rematch of the Miami Heat vs. the Denver Nuggets on Friday night. In a far, far, far different setting.
The competition this time was in the NBA2K24 Summer League in Las Vegas, on a night the Heat opted to sit many of the leading men from their summer roster.
Playing in the absences of Nikola Jovic, Orlando Robinson, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Dru Smith and Drew Peterson, the Heat looked like a team poised to leave Las Vegas, falling behind by 40 at one point on the way to a 112-81 loss to the Nuggets’ summer roster.
The Heat got 20 points and six rebounds from...
Vermont hit by 2nd day of floods as muddy water reaches the tops of parking meters in capital city
By LISA RATHKE (Associated Press)
ANDOVER, Vt. (AP) — A storm that dumped up to two months of rain in two days in Vermont and other parts of the Northeast brought more flooding Tuesday to communities that included the state capital, where officials said that river levels at a dam just upstream appeared to be stable.
Muddy brown water from the Winooski River flowed Tuesday through the capital of Montpelier, obscuring vehicles and all but the tops of parking meters along picturesque streets lined with brick storefronts whose basements and lower floors were flooded. Some residents of the city...
Relentless rain causes floods in Northeast, prompts rescues and swamps Vermont’s capital
By LISA RATHKE and JOHN MINCHILLO (Associated Press)
ANDOVER, Vt. (AP) — Rescue teams raced into Vermont on Monday after heavy rain drenched parts of the Northeast, washing out roads, forcing evacuations and halting some airline travel. One person was killed in New York’s Hudson Valley as she tried to escape her flooded home.
Mike Cannon of Vermont Urban Search and Rescue said crews from North Carolina, Michigan and Connecticut were among those helping to get to towns that have been unreachable since torrents of rain belted the state. The towns of Londonderry and Weston were inaccessible,...

One of the top hitters in Hurricanes history is likely headed to the pros.
The Washington Nationals picked Miami third baseman Yohandy Morales with the 40th pick in the MLB draft on Sunday night. He is the first of several UM players likely to be selected this year.
“(He) turned out to be one of our all-time great players,” former Miami coach Gino DiMare said. “Clutch player. He’s just a great, great teammate that the players looked up to.”
Morales, a Miami Braddock High alumnus, will likely receive a large signing bonus to persuade him from returning to Miami for his senior year. The slot...
Dave Hyde: Marlins keep winning to go into All-Star break as the surprise of baseball
MIAMI — You never know when it will hit you. It hit Dane Myers during the National Anthem on Sunday. He realized just before this craziest of weeks got even crazier that he actually was here, living his dream, playing in the major leagues as the Miami Marlins center fielder.
“I got a little emotional,’’ he said.
No matter Myers was called up from the minors Monday when Jazz Chisholm suffered an oblique muscle injury. No matter he took over center field when Chisholm’s replacement, Jonathan Davis, suffered a knee injury Tuesday.
No matter Myers got his first big-league hit in his first...

Inter Miami blow two second-half leads, but salvage third consecutive draw ahead of coaching switch
There was no fairytale ending for Javier Morales on Saturday night. But to his credit, he’s now led Inter Miami to points in three consecutive games.
The interim head coach was given one last game before Tata Martino officially takes over and he slides back to his assistant job, and it ended in a 2-2 draw at D.C. United.
Inter Miami held two separate leads in the second half, but failed to hold onto each of them.
Midfielder Benjamin Cremaschi and defender Noah Allen each scored their first career MLS goals to account for Inter Miami’s scoring, but each was answered with a quick D.C. United...

By ZEKE MILLER, TARA COPP and LOLITA C. BALDOR (Associated Press)
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden on Friday defended what he said was a “difficult decision” to provide cluster munitions to Ukraine, a move the administration said was key to the fight and buttressed by Ukraine’s promise to use the controversial bombs carefully.
The decision comes on the eve of the NATO summit in Lithuania, where Biden is likely to face questions from allies on why the U.S. would send a weapon into Ukraine that more than two-thirds of alliance members have banned because it has a track record for...
