Flaherty, three relievers keep Marlins from grabbing four-game sweep of Cardinals

MIAMI — Nolan Arenado homered, Jack Flaherty pitched 6 2/3 innings of shutout ball and the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Miami Marlins 3-0 on Thursday night to avoid a series sweep. St. Louis dropped the first three games of the series. Two were one-run defeats, including a 10-9 walk-off loss Wednesday night. Flaherty (6-5) struck out five, walked two and allowed nine hits. He also threw six scoreless innings against the New York Yankees on July 1 and has lowered his ERA from 4.95 to 4.27 in the two starts. Chris Stratton replaced Flaherty at a season-high 111 pitches in the seventh after...

By MOGOMOTSI MAGOME and GERALD IMRAY (Associated Press) JOHANNESBURG (AP) — At least 16 people, including three children, were killed by a leak of a toxic nitrate gas being used by illegal miners to process gold in a settlement of closely packed metal shacks, South African police and local officials said late Wednesday. Emergency services initially announced that as many as 24 people might be dead in the Angelo settlement in Boksburg, a city on the eastern outskirts of Johannesburg. But police and Gauteng Province Premier Panyaza Lesufi later said the number of deaths had been confirmed as...

Cardinals closer throws ball away in ninth, Marlins win another one-run game, can get four-game sweep on Thursday

MIAMI — Two runs scored on a throwing error by Cardinals closer Jordan Hicks with one out in the ninth inning, and the Miami Marlins rallied to beat the St. Louis Cardinals 10-9 on Wednesday night. With Yuli Gurriel on first after a single and pinch-runner Garrett Hampson on second, Joey Wendle hit a dribbler back to Hicks (1-5). The pitcher’s high, errant throw got past first baseman Paul Goldschmidt to allow both runners to score. The Cardinals’ Jordan Walker hit a two run homer off Marlins closer A.J. Puk (4-2) in the ninth to make it 9-8. The Cardinals came from behind to tie the game...

Josef Martinez’s bicycle kick leads Inter Miami to second consecutive draw

FORT LAUDERDALE — Independence Day fireworks filled the sky around DRV PNK Stadium Tuesday night, but they could’ve used some more pink and black to celebrate Josef Martinez’s jaw-dropping goal. The second half substitute scored the equalizer in the 90th minute on a bicycle kick to force an Inter Miami 2-2 draw against the Columbus Crew. It may have been the goal of his career, which is saying something for someone who is now tied for ninth all-time in career MLS goals. Inter Miami interim coach Javier Morales said at Monday’s training that he was unsure if he’d bench Martinez in favor of...

A sweet slice of history: Florida Keys celebrate 200th birthday with giant Key lime pie

BIG PINE KEY — Partying never gets old in the Florida Keys — especially for a milestone birthday like No. 200. The Florida Keys celebrated its bicentennial Monday along the Gulf of Mexico with a Key lime pie more than 13 feet in diameter — which organizers intend to certify as a world record. The festivities marked the anniversary of the Florida Territorial Legislature’s establishment of Monroe County on July 3, 1823 and celebrated its history. The county contains all of the Keys and a portion of Everglades National Park. During the Civil War, Key West remained in Union hands as a base for...

Legitimacy of ‘customer’ in Supreme Court gay rights case raises ethical, legal flags

By ALANNA DURKIN RICHER and COLLEEN SLEVIN (Associated Press) A Christian graphic artist who the Supreme Court said can refuse to make wedding websites for gay couples pointed during her lawsuit to a request from a man named “Stewart” and his husband-to-be. The twist? Stewart says it never happened. The revelation has raised questions about how Lorie Smith’s case was allowed to proceed all the way to the nation’s highest court with such an apparent misrepresentation and whether the state of Colorado, which lost the case last week, has any legal recourse. It has served as another distraction...

Three of the wounded were in critical condition and more than a dozen were under 18. The shooting took place just after 12:30 a.m. when at least two people opened fire at a block party in the Brooklyn Homes area in the southern part of the city, said Richard Worley, Baltimore’s acting police commissioner. No arrests had been made by late...

Jorge Soler will join Luis Arraez as Marlins at All-Star Game in Seattle

NEW YORK — The Miami Marlins will have a second representative at the All-Star Game in Seattle after slugger Jorge Soler was added as a reserve on Sunday evening. For the Cuban-born Soler, the 2021 World Series Most Valuable Player while with the Atlanta Braves, it will be his first All-Star Game. Soler, who has 22 home runs, also had 22 round-trippers for the Royals on selection day in 2019 but was left off the squad. He was hitting .233 with 55 RBI four years ago and is hitting .241 with 47 RBI heading into Monday’s play. Soler joins Luis Arraez as Marlins heading to the Pacific Northwest...

Inter Miami draws Austin FC for first point since May 13, though winless skid stretches to eight

FORT LAUDERDALE — Newly named Inter Miami coach Tata Martino was in the building Saturday night at DRV PNK Stadium. Perhaps it added some extra juice to Inter Miami, but, as he awaits his necessary work documents, he could only watch from a suite as his future club extended its winless streak to eight games. On one hand, the 1-1 draw against Austin FC was Inter Miami’s first point since May 13. But on the other side, it was a disappointing result for an Inter Miami squad — now 5-13-2 and still last in the Eastern Conference — that failed the bury a handful of scoring chances. “I spoke with...
