FAU handled by Charlotte in Lunsford’s debut; Owls skid toward worst record since 2011

BOCA RATON — Deshawn Purdie threw a 47-yard touchdown pass to O’Mega Blake for the go-ahead score and Charlotte defeated Florida Atlantic 39-27 on Saturday in a game that matched two new interim coaches. Charlotte (4-7, 3-4 American Athletic Conference) fired Biff Poggi on Monday and Tim Brewster took over. FAU (2-9, 0-7) fired Tom Herman, also on Monday, with Chad Lunsford taking charge. After Blake’s third touchdown catch of the game that came with 5:25 left, the 49ers extended their lead when Tyriq Starks was strip-sacked by Ja’Qurious Conley and 335-pound Katron Kevans carried it 22...

UCF holds off pesky Tennessee Tech to extend perfect start

Keyshawn Hall led four UCF players in double digits, withstanding a furious second-half rally to outlast Tennessee Tech, 80-69, on Tuesday night. Hall followed up a season-high 26 points against FAU last week by scoring 20 points, 12 in the second half. UCF built a 20-point lead early in the second half, but cold shooting helped the Golden Eagles go on a 20-9 run to pull to 65-62 with 7:17 left. The Knights didn’t let it get any closer. The Knights improved to 4-0 for the first time since the 2021-22 season. “We beat a good team tonight. I thought we beat a team that’s very difficult to...

FAU falls to host Temple in overtime to remain winless in AAC

PHILADELPHIA — Maddux Trujillo made four field goals, including a walk-off 39-yarder in overtime to give Temple an 18-15 victory over Florida Atlantic on Saturday. CJ Campbell’s 1-yard touchdown run with 34 seconds left in regulation pulled the Owls within 15-13. On the ensuing two-point attempt, Campbell pitched the ball to Omari Hayes off a reverse, who then tossed it to quarterback Tyriq Starks in the end zone that tied it 15-all. Terrez...

Keyshawn Hall, Darius Johnson spark UCF past FAU

Whenever it seemed like UCF needed a bucket Tuesday night, there was Keyshawn Hall. The 6-foot-7 junior forward seemed everywhere on the court for the Knights, whether it was putting up a well-timed 3-pointer or battling under the basket for a rebound. Helton was the catalyst who fueled UCF to a 100-94 win over visiting FAU. Hall scored 20 of his game-high 26 points in the second half as the Knights improved to 3-0 for the first time since the 2021-22 season. “My mindset going into the game is just … I’m from Cleveland, so I’m just going to go at people and if I’m not scoring, I’m drawing...

Hurricanes fall in latest College Football Playoff rankings

Unsurprisingly, the Miami Hurricanes took a tumble in this week’s College Football Playoff rankings following their first loss of the season. Fortunately for Miami, a path to the playoff is still wide open despite falling to No. 9 on Tuesday night after ranking fourth in the initial rankings. UM also fell to No. 12 in other polls on Sunday. The Hurricanes were seeded fourth as one of the likely Power 4 conference champions. That would give UM a first-round bye. As long as the Hurricanes win the ACC title, they have a clear path to a first-round bye in the playoffs. If they lose another...

Seminoles searching for solutions at Notre Dame

By Bob Ferrante Orlando Sentinel Correspondent TALLAHASSEE — The future is on display each week now for Florida State, with freshmen and sophomores starting across the offense. But it’s becoming tougher and tougher to gauge the progress of some of the young Seminoles because of the myriad problems. Florida State’s eighth starting offensive line combination allowed seven sacks and pressure on the majority of drop-back passes from Brock Glenn and Luke Kromenhoek in last week’s 35-11 loss to North Carolina. Glenn or Kromenhoek are the quarterbacks of the present, but coach Mike Norvell is also...
