GATORS PODCAST: Florida’s season-closing surge saves National Signing Day (Ep. 262)

Three weeks ago, the Gators’ 2025 recruiting class was barely inside the top 50 and circling the drain. But since upsetting LSU, the Gators have flipped the script along with a dozen recruits verbally committed to other schools. By National Signing Day, the Gators had risen to No. 11,  and even briefly entered the top 10. Billy Napier credited UF AD Scott Stricklin’s vote of confidence followed by a three-game winning streak convincing prospects who were on the fence to take a leap of faith. During the latest Swamp Things, Edgar and Mark break down Napier’s fourth class at Florida. ...

Dave Hyde: Miami has only one place to look for playoff miss — and it’s not the voters

Here’s the worst part: The Miami Hurricanes can only blame themselves. Oh, it can point at the College Football Playoff committee for voting it out of the playoffs. Miami can say its two losses are less than Alabama’s three  and talk about Southeastern Conference conspiracy and NCAA hierarchy. Maybe that’s true to a degree. But the full truth is Miami let this come down to judges ranking style points and swimsuit competitions because it didn’t do enough at the end of the season to take it out of the committee’s gnarled hands when they should have. It had a limp schedule, the 55th ranked one...

UF QB DJ Lagway pushes to have Pied Piper Effect on Early National Signing Day

GAINESVILLE — Florida coach Billy Napier’s best recruiter could turn out to be the true freshman quarterback who spearheaded the Gators’ November turnaround. Following a 31-11 win Saturday night at Florida State, DJ Lagway said he was ready to get to work building on UF’s momentum to strengthen his supporting cast in 2025. “I’m definitely going to be involved in the transfer portal and the recruiting class,” the 19-year-old said. “But the biggest thing is keeping the guys that we have here … just making sure that everyone’s locked in.” Florida quarterback DJ Lagway (2) scrambles away from...

Mario Cristobal, Cam Ward make Hurricanes’ case for College Football Playoff spot

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — No. 6 Miami started Saturday in control of its own playoff destiny. After losing to Syracuse, the Hurricanes need some help. Miami will need the College Football Playoff selection committee to look favorably on it and give the team an at-large bid in order to make the 12-team tournament. UM coach Mario Cristobal and quarterback Cam Ward made that case after the loss. “A lot of stuff going on in terms of the CFP and how they’re going to figure things out, as well,” Cristobal said. “There’s a lot of good football teams out there, and we’re one of them.” Ward cited the team’s...

No. 18 Gators wake up to put away Wake Forest at Disney tournament

Scrappy defensive play that led to 10 steals and an overall aggressive nature helped carry No. 18 Florida to a 75-58 victory over Wake Forest on Thanksgiving Day at the ESPN Events Invitational at State Farm Field House. The Gators (7-0) remained unbeaten by pressuring the ball on defense and pushing the tempo in a game that didn’t start out particularly well for them. Florida scored just 11 points in the first 11 minutes and the Deacons had a chance to blow this game open. But thanks to the Gators’ tenacity on defense, they were able to keep the score close. “Credit to Wake, I thought they...

UCF guard Darius Johnson sparks win over Milwaukee

If UCF men’s basketball has anything to be thankful for this Thanksgiving, it’s Darius Johnson. The senior guard scored a season-high 28 points to help spark the Knights past Milwaukee 84-76 on Wednesday night. It was his second consecutive 20-plus-point game after scoring 25 points in a 109-102 loss to LSU on Sunday. Johnson was 8 of 10 from 3-point range, while the rest of the team shot 21% (3 of 14). “Darius was terrific. He had a great night,” said coach Johnny Dawkins. “More so than even the points and shooting the basketball, he’s so comfortable in his role now and leading our team....

Hurricanes climb College Football Playoff rankings ahead of season finale

The Miami Hurricanes have one game left in their regular season, and they are in a good position to make their first trip to the College Football Playoff. If they win their regular-season finale against Syracuse and the ACC title game against SMU, they are a lock for a playoff berth and almost certainly assured a first-round bye. After Indiana and Alabama suffered defeats last weekend, the Hurricanes moved up to No. 6 in Tuesday night’s College Football Playoff ranking. Miami is projected to be the No. 3 seed, which would give them a first-round bye. The Hurricanes would play in the Peach...

UCF’s postseason hopes end with loss at West Virginia

MORGANTOWN, W.V. — Somewhere deep in West Virginia’s hollers under a cold and dismal gray sky, UCF’s season ended. Sure, the Knights have one game remaining against Utah on Friday, but any hope of salvaging something positive from the unbelievably frustrating season quietly ended in Saturday’s 31-21 loss to West Virginia. UCF’s slim hopes of making a postseason bowl were squashed after the Mountaineers rushed for 200 yards. This means the Knights are guaranteed to finish with a losing record for the second consecutive year and snap a streak of eight straight bowl appearances. “You look at...
