Broward needs a new 911 center, leaders agree. But where should it be built?

Broward taxpayers are likely to fund a new facility to house the county’s 911 dispatch center. But finding the right location, in part, could hinge on who would retain oversight of the services. Sheriff Gregory Tony appealed to county commissioners Tuesday with his proposal for a seven-story parking garage, a four-story, 62,750-square-foot building housing a 911 call center and an 11,800-square-foot, on-site day care for up to 100 children of Sheriff’s Office employees. About 85% of the employees are women, Tony said. He wants the new complex to be built alongside the sheriff’s headquarters...

Johnny Dawkins’ poor-shooting UCF prepares for visit from WVU

UCF basketball coach Johnny Dawkins’ message after every game this season, win or lose, has been that his team is learning and it has to respond to what it has learned with each succeeding challenge. At Houston on Saturday, the Knights failed miserably at one part of the learning process but on another front they responded well. So it’s difficult to judge these Knights (11-6, 2-3 Big 12) as they head into another tough conference game Tuesday at 7 p.m. at home against a revitalized West Virginia squad. Controversial transfer Mikey Williams not allowed to enroll at UCF for months | Commentary The...

General Daily Insight for January 23, 2024 Discipline versus impulsiveness: this is today’s fight. Fair Venus moves into serious Capricorn at 3:50 am EST, invoking solemn efforts to even out our connections with others and our finances. The sensitive Moon also coordinates with open-minded Jupiter, bringing lucky vibes and more easy-going sensibilities. Later on, the Moon snaps at both thoughtful Mercury and driven Mars, setting off an impulsive energy within that can get us in trouble if we act on it too quickly. Do the right thing, not the rushed thing. Aries March 21 – April 19 You’re putting...

Winderman’s view: Time for the next Heat thing after Jovic?

ORLANDO — Observations and other notes of interest from Sunday night’s 105-87 loss to the Orlando Magic: – In a meritocracy, what now with Nikola Jovic? – Sunday was the 10th consecutive start. – With diminishing returns. – Yes, more size than Caleb Martin or Haywood Highsmith at the four. – But also with zero attention from opposing defenses. – For some teams, the reasoning would be as simple as allowing for growing pains. – But this is not a lottery team. – Or a team in the midst of a long-term plan. – This is  a win-now team. – Amid a closing Jimmy Butler window. – Developmental program? –...
