By REBECCA BOONE (Associated Press) Follow live updates about wildfires that have devastated parts of Maui in Hawaii this week, destroying a historic town and forcing evacuations. The National Weather Service said Hurricane Dora, which passed south of the island chain, was partly to blame for strong winds that initially drove the flames, knocking out power and grounding firefighting helicopters. In a press conference Saturday, Gov. Josh Green said the number of confirmed deaths from the Maui wildfires has risen to 89, making it the deadliest U.S. wildfire in more than 100 years. There were 2,200...

Alcantara’s yo-yo season rolls on with dominant five-hitter against Yankees in Marlins’ win

MIAMI — Sandy Alcantara threw a complete-game five-hitter, Luis Arraez homered and the Miami Marlins beat the New York Yankees 3-1 on Saturday. Alcantara (5-10) struck out 10 in his major league-leading third complete game and first home win since going the distance against Minnesota on April 4. The reigning NL Cy Young Award winner coaxed 11 groundouts before a season-best crowd of 33,980. “Today was as good as you’ve seen him,” Marlins manager Skip Schumaker said. “Maybe the Twins game matches that, but where we are in the season for him to do that, it was a really impressive outing at a time...

Hurricanes flip blue-chip defensive lineman Elias Rudolph from Michigan

The Hurricanes and defensive line coach Jason Taylor tried to land defensive end Elias Rudolph before he committed in July, but Michigan was the blue-chip prospect’s preferred destination. But now Rudolph has changed his mind. The four-star defensive end flipped from Michigan to Miami on Saturday night, announcing his decision on social media. His commitment comes just one day after the Hurricanes landed their first 2025 commit, quarterback Luke Nickel.  Rudolph, who plays for Taft High in Cincinnati, is rated the No. 21 edge rusher and No. 292 player in the 2024 class. He is listed at 6-4 and...

Lionel Messi quiet (by his standards), but Inter Miami roll, advance to Leagues Cup semifinals

FORT LAUDERDALE — Lionel Messi almost didn’t score for the first time in an Inter Miami uniform. The international superstar played all 90 minutes Friday night, but he rarely provided any threatening moments nor a jaw-dropping play like he had in each of his first four Inter Miami games. Besides the extra buzz in the stadium whenever he touched the ball, Messi looked human. But even so, he still found his way on the scoresheet in the match’s final minutes on a tap-in goal for good measure. The match was all but over at that point, as Inter Miami grinded to a 4-0 victory over Charlotte FC at...

By TY O’NEIL, CLAIRE RUSH, JENNIFER SINCO KELLEHER and CHRISTOPHER WEBER (Associated Press) LAHAINA, Hawaii (AP) — A search of the wildfire devastation on the Hawaiian island of Maui on Thursday revealed a wasteland of obliterated neighborhoods and landmarks charred beyond recognition, as the death toll rose to at least 53 and survivors told harrowing tales of narrow escapes with only the clothes on their backs. A flyover of historic Lahaina showed entire neighborhoods that had been a vibrant vision of color and island life reduced to gray ash. Block after block was nothing but rubble and blackened...

How to help or donate in response to the deadly wildfire in Maui

By THALIA BEATY (Associated Press) While rescue and emergency operations continued Thursday at the deadly wildfires that swept across the Hawaiian island of Maui, many people are already looking for ways to support the response and provide relief to those affected. The full extent of the damage and the recovery needs may not be known for up to a week, said Regine Webster, vice president of the Center for Disaster Philanthropy, and she urged people to be patient before deciding where to give their support. “You literally have to wait for the firefighters to complete their work before that damage...

Florida’s African-American history standards blasted at South Florida town hall

Hundreds arrived a historic Black church looking for answers about Florida’s controversial African-American history standards and left ready to fight against what they see as increasing racism in the state. The one person they hoped to get answers from at Thursday night education town hall — Florida Education Commissioner Manny Diaz — declined to appear after initially agreeing to attend. So those attending spent much of the evening discussing how to fight against the DeSantis movement and the growing conservative activism marked by groups like Moms for Liberty, who have fought to get books...

‘Plane down:’ 911 caller reports deadly crash at North Perry Airport | Listen

The first person to call 911 on Friday afternoon to report the crash of a Cessna 172 at the North Perry Airport said he hadn’t seen anyone get out of the plane. Flight instructor Felipe Becerra Cardenas, of Pembroke Pines, was flying the small single-engine aircraft with two passengers aboard, who were on a “discovery flight,” intended to interest the passengers in becoming pilots. Officials said Shelby Thomas, of Port Wentworth, Ga., was seated next to Becerra Cardenas while Jamal Hall, 25, also from Georgia, was seated in the back. Thomas and Becerra Cardenas did not survive. Hall was the...
