Judge rejects Trump’s claim of immunity in his federal 2020 election prosecution

By ALANNA DURKIN RICHER and ERIC TUCKER (Associated Press) WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump is not immune from prosecution in his election interference case in Washington, a federal judge ruled Friday, knocking down the Republican’s bid to derail the case charging him with plotting to overturn the 2020 presidential election. U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan’s decision amounts to a sharp rejection to challenges the Trump defense team had raised to the four-count indictment in advance of a trial expected to center on the Republican’s multi-pronged efforts to undo the election won by Democrat Joe...

No. 13 Florida Atlantic, led by Martin’s 20 points, cruises and hands Liberty its first loss of the season

BOCA RATON — Alijah Martin scored 20 points and Vlad Goldin added 18 points and seven rebounds as No. 13 Florida Atlantic cruised past Liberty 83-58 on Thursday night in the opening game of the Field of 68 Tipoff Classic. The Owls extended a 15-point halftime lead to 29 in the second period and handed Liberty (6-1) its first loss of the season. Playing at home for the first time since its Nov. 18 upset loss to Bryant, FAU (6-1) overcame a sluggish shooting start by pounding the ball inside — where Liberty had no answer for Goldin and Martin. The duo combined for 24 of the team’s 44 first-half...

Review: ‘The Berlin Diaries’ at FAU’s Theatre Lab is ‘a master class in acting’

Families are complicated, composed of people who may have little in common but bloodlines, sometimes weighted down by secrets, lies, myths. Add to that mix a horrific event, so horrible it’s hard to wrap one’s mind around, and the complications grow. Family dynamics are the foundation of the deeply moving, highly effective “The Berlin Diaries,” receiving a first-rate production through Sunday, Dec. 10, at Theatre Lab, on the campus of Boca Raton’s Florida Atlantic University. “The Berlin Diaries” is an autobiographical play written by Andrea Stolowitz, who began working on the piece several...

Chris Perkins: Dolphins are winning and having fun, and coach Mike McDaniel is a big reason for both

MIAMI GARDENS — The Dolphins lead the league in offense, points, and fun. Yeah, you read that one correctly. Fun. In short, the first-place Dolphins (8-3) are mixing business with pleasure in a way that’s hardly ever seen in the NFL. They’re always laughing and joking and smiling. “I feel like we have more fun than any other team in the NFL from meeting with a couple of guys on different teams and asking around and talking,” running back Jeff Wilson Jr. said. “I’m not going to put any names out there, but I feel we have one of the most fun teams to be on. “But we’re still about business. Don’t...

Henry Kissinger, secretary of state under Presidents Nixon and Ford, dies at 100

By NANCY BENAC (Associated Press) Former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger, the diplomat with the thick glasses and gravelly voice who dominated foreign policy as the United States extricated itself from Vietnam and broke down barriers with China, died Wednesday, his consulting firm said. He was 100. With his gruff yet commanding presence and behind-the-scenes manipulation of power, Kissinger exerted uncommon influence on global affairs under Presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford, earning both vilification and the Nobel Peace Prize. Decades later, his name still provoked impassioned debate...

Chris Perkins: Things to watch for in Miami Dolphins-Washington Commanders matchup

MIAMI GARDENS — More power seems to be coming to the Miami Dolphins’ high-powered offense for Sunday’s game at the Washington Commanders. Rookie running back De’Von Achane, the dynamic big-play threat who averages 11.8 yards per carry, seems on schedule to return from his right knee ailment. Beyond that, there’s a chance fellow rookie running back Chris Brooks (knee) also returns. Brooks would provide an option for short-yardage situations, one of the few shortcomings for Miami’s offense this season. But there might be a balance for the returnees in the form of absences. Miami will keep an eye...

Video released of suspect who robbed man of wallet and shot him in leg, police say

A man was robbed of his wallet and shot in the leg by an unidentified suspect in Fort Lauderdale, and then he drove himself to a nearby police station for help. The police department released video of the suspect Wednesday night who has been unidentified since the shooting in June. The victim, a transportation driver, was working on the afternoon of June 20 in the 300 block of Northwest 17th Avenue, waiting to pick up a customer. He was parked in the area waiting for a client when a man approached his window with a gun and demanded money, according to an incident report. He didn’t have any cash,...

Second ‘Hard Knocks’ episode tracking Dolphins features inside look at Jaelan Phillips’ Achilles injury

Miami Dolphins edge defender Jaelan Phillips’ Achilles injury suffered in Friday’s win over the New York Jets was a focal point of Tuesday night’s second episode of HBO reality series “Hard Knocks” following the team for the remainder of the season. Phillips knew immediately that he tore his Achilles on his takeoff on a fourth-quarter pass rush at MetLife Stadium. “I think my (expletive) popped, my Achilles,” the cameras and microphones captured Phillips saying. “It felt like someone (expletive) shot me in my (expletive) Achilles. I thought someone like stepped on me.” Cameras showed Phillips...

Sports Illustrated is the latest media company damaged by an AI experiment gone wrong

By DAVID BAUDER (AP Media Writer) NEW YORK (AP) — Computer-generated writers … writing computer-generated stories? Sports Illustrated is the latest media company to see its reputation damaged by being less than forthcoming — if not outright dishonest — about who or what is writing its stories at the dawn of the artificial intelligence age. The once-powerful publication said it was firing a company that produced articles for its website written under the byline of authors who apparently don’t exist. But it denied a published report that stories themselves were written by an artificial intelligence...

Here’s hoping UCF isn’t ducking USF in a bowl game | Commentary

Let’s get right down to it, shall we? UCF and USF should play in a bowl game. We want them to play in a bowl game. We need them to play in a bowl game. Any bowl game. Preferably right here in Orlando at the Avocados From Mexico Cure Bowl, which has raised millions of dollars over the years for cancer research and is actually played in UCF’s home stadium. UCF-USF would sell out the Bounce House and raise even more money to help cure cancer. A good game for a great cause. Or if USF doesn’t want to play a bowl game in UCF’s home stadium then play the game in the Gasparilla Bowl at USF’s home field...
