Dalton Knecht scores 39 to lead No. 6 Tennessee past Florida

By Al Lesar Associated Press KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Dalton Knecht scored a career-high 39 points and had 8 rebounds to lead No. 6 Tennessee past Florida 85-66 on Tuesday. Jonas Aidoo had 19 points and a team-high 10 rebounds to help the Volunteers (13-4, 3-1 SEC) win their 12th straight at home. UF AD Scott Stricklin insists Billy Napier is not on hot seat: ‘It has nothing to do with reality’   “Anytime Jonas is aggressive and locked in, he’s a major factor,” said Tennessee coach Rick Barnes. “The guys are starting to understand each other where they need the ball.” Knecht averaged 32 points in...

College ADs cower in the presence of coaching super-agent Jimmy Sexton | Commentary

Who do you think is the most powerful person in college football? SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey? Big Ten Commissioner Tony Petitti? NCAA President Charlie Baker? College Football Playoff Executive Director Bill Hancock? Influential ESPN commentator Paul Finebaum? Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong and wrong. You’re not even close. It’s college football coaching super-agent Jimmy Sexton, the man who has literally and legally convinced college athletic directors to sign away mega-millions, if not billions of dollars, in one-sided coaching contracts to his grateful clients over the years. Sports agent Jimmy...

Democrat Keen wins state House 35 special election over GOP’s Booth

In a race seen as a bellwether for Democratic chances in November, Democrat Tom Keen flipped what had been a Republican state House seat in Central Florida in a special election held Tuesday. Keen, a Navy flight officer who works in the aerospace training and simulation industry, defeated Republican Erika Booth, a teacher and member of the Osceola School Board. Unofficial totals for the District 35 seat had Keen with 51.3% of the vote to Booth’s 48.7%. “A huge THANK YOU to all our supporters, volunteers, and voters who believed in our vision for a better, brighter District 35,” Keen wrote on...

Trump leads GOP rightward march and other takeaways from the Iowa caucuses

By Nicholas Riccardi and Brian Slodysko, Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) — Donald Trump’s iron grip on the Republican Party has been clear since the day he announced he would make another run for the White House 14 months ago. It can be seen in the party’s ideological shift even further to the right on cultural issues and, especially, on immigration policy. Iowa Republicans were a clear reflection of that on Monday night, delivering the former president an emphatic victory. They channeled his anger, and his view that basically everything President Joe Biden has done has been a “disaster.” About...

General Daily Insight for January 16, 2024

General Daily Insight for January 16, 2024 The heat is on! Due to delicate Luna’s disagreement with expressive Mercury, it becomes difficult to express ourselves in a way that isn’t aggressive, irritable, or dramatic. We may feel like we have to defend our points of view, which is okay — as long as we don’t let our emotions incite self-defeat through impulsive actions. The fire keeps growing as the Moon squares passionate Mars at 3:14 pm, so keeping cool will be difficult to do. Try to keep your bonfire under control. Aries March 21 – April 19 The fire within might be hard to keep down. You...

Chris Perkins: Here’s why Chiefs’ Chris Jones was laughing in Dolphins’ locker room after playoff game

MIAMI GARDENS — It was one of the most bizarre scenes I’ve ever seen in a losing playoff locker room. For a few brief minutes Saturday night, not long, perhaps three or four minutes, one small corner of the Miami Dolphins’ locker room had such a raucous buzz you’d have thought they’d just won their first playoff game in 23 years. It turns out Dolphins linebacker Justin Houston, who had been with the team for a mere four days, was hosting visitors — longtime friends Chris Jones, the Kansas City All Pro defensive tackle who just helped the Chiefs smoke the Dolphins and end their Super Bowl hopes,...

Heat announce statue for Dwyane Wade, rout Hornets, but lose Jaime Jaquez to injury

MIAMI – Dwyane Wade can have good things. The Miami Heat made that clear Sunday, announcing the franchise icon next fall will become the team’s first player to have a statue in front of Kaseya Center, a halftime announcement by Heat President Pat Riley that brought Wade to tears. But in this injury-ravaged season, the Heat on Sunday also had to deal with the reality that even in victory, adversity remains front and center. Already playing in the injury absences of Jimmy Butler and Kevin Love, the Heat lost rookie guard Jaime Jaquez Jr. with a strained left groin for the second half of Sunday...

Daws stops 36 shots, Devils top Panthers 4-1 to end Florida’s 9-game winning streak

By TIM REYNOLDS (AP Sports Writer) SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) — Nico Daws stopped almost everything that came his way. The goalposts helped out a little bit as well. Daws stopped 36 shots, Jesper Bratt scored for the second straight game and the New Jersey Devils snapped Florida’s nine-game winning streak by topping the Panthers 4-1 on Saturday night. “He made some big saves,” Devils coach Lindy Ruff said. “I think you need that. We were undermanned a little bit and I think you’ve got to rely on your goaltender for quality saves — and he gave us some quality saves.” Bratt’s goal was his 16th of the...
