Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers again feted at White House | Video

President Donald Trump honored the NHL champions Florida Panthers for winning the Stanley Cup for the second year in a row. The team, led by Matthew Tkachuk, presented Trump with a custom jersey that said “Trump 47” for the second year in a row. They also gave the president a golden hockey stick and a ring. The team all donned red ties, imitating a look Trump has worn so often it has become a signature look. But Trump on Thursday wore a deep burgundy tie. Appeals court rejects class-action lawsuit over data breach at Broward Health

An appeals court Wednesday rejected a class-action lawsuit filed against the North Broward Hospital District after a 2021 data breach. A three-judge panel of the 4th District Court of Appeal upheld a circuit judge’s ruling that the district, also known as Broward Health, was shielded by sovereign immunity, which helps protect government agencies from liability. The lawsuit, filed on behalf of patients whose private information was exposed in the data breach, alleged negligence and breach of contract by the hospital system. But the appeals court, in a ruling written by Judge Robert Gross and...

Dolphins to line up interview with South Florida native, Buffalo Bills coordinator

A South Florida native is now among the candidates for the Miami Dolphins’ vacant head coaching position. He’s also been leading the offense of a Dolphins rival in recent years. Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady, who was born in Pembroke Pines, has been requested for an interview, according to a league source Wednesday night. That brings Miami’s list of candidates they’ve reached out to up to 11, after the team requested to talk to former linebackers coach Anthony Campanile, now the Jacksonville Jaguars defensive coordinator, earlier Wednesday. Incidentally, Brady’s Bills...

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Tre Donaldson scored 23 points, Malik Reneau recorded a double-double and Miami took control in the second half to beat Notre Dame 81-69 on Tuesday night. Jalen Haralson scored 18 points and reserve Sir Mohammed had 15 points for Notre Dame (10-7, 1-3), which has lost four of its last five. The Hurricanes used a 17-5 run in the first six minutes of the second half to turn a 39-all...

Marlins trade pitcher Ryan Weathers to Yankees for 4 prospects

NEW YORK — Left-hander Ryan Weathers was acquired by the New York Yankees from the Miami Marlins on Tuesday for four prospects, a move to bolster a rotation that will be missing Gerrit Cole and Carlos Rodón when the season starts. Miami received outfielders Brendan Jones and Dillon Lewis and infielders Dylan Jasso and Juan Matheus. Weathers, 26, was 2-2 with a 3.99 ERA in eight starts last year in his second straight injury-shortened season. He missed time with a strained left flexor, made his season debut on May 14, then didn’t pitch for Miami between June 7 and Sept. 11 because of a left...

New UCF QB Alonza Barnett III seen as ‘ultimate competitor’

For Darryl Brown, few football players stand out like Alonza Barnett III, a talent brimming with the tools for success. Brown witnessed Barnett’s skill firsthand while serving as his coach at Grimsley High School in Greensboro, N.C. The pair would help to lead the Whirlies to the NCHSAA Class 4A state championship in 2020, with Barnett earning MVP honors along the way. Even five years later, the admiration for his former player can be heard in Brown’s voice. “He’s a winner and one of the nicest, most polite young men you’ll ever meet,” Brown recently told the Sentinel. “When you put him on...

Winderman’s view: Another blow to Heat continuity, but Larsson has his moments

Observations and other notes of interest from Sunday night’s 124-112 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder: – A night after having the entire primary rotation available for just the fourth time this season … that number remained at four. – This time it was Norman Powell out of the mix, sidelined by lower-back soreness. – Ironically, less than a day after Powell was talking about the importance of the team’s core finally getting minutes together. – And so, as midseason approaches this week, we still don’t know about what works. – Even as we learn what doesn’t. – With Powell out, it had Pelle...

Heat road to ruin ends with 124-112 loss to Thunder, with Powell sidelined

The end came as expected, the Miami Heat on the second night of a back-to-back set running out of gas in Sunday night’s 124-112 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder at Paycom Center. Against the team with the best record in the league, it’s not as if even the best of Heat nights might have been enough against the rested defending NBA champions. But it was the cumulative of the weeklong trip that has the Heat teetering, the record down to 20-19, after yet another inability to sustain. In the end, a week that wasn’t. First, the 122-94 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves, when coach Erik Spoelstra...

Heat dreadful in 123-99 loss to dreadful Pacers amid rocky road trip

INDIANAPOLIS – In theory, this should have been the best version of the Miami Heat. It was anything but. With Erik Spoelstra’s primary rotation whole for just the fourth time this season, what set up as a welcomed reunion became anything but. Instead, a 123-99 loss Saturday night at Gainbridge Fieldhouse to the NBA-worst Indiana Pacers. With Spoelstra moving to a starting lineup seemingly as talented as any started by the team this season, the response was an early 25-point deficit and a rally that fell short to the degree that the bench was emptied with eight minutes remaining and the Heat...

Winderman’s view: Heat whole but wholly unacceptable in loss to Pacers

INDIANAPOLIS — Observations and other notes of interest from Saturday night’s 123-99 loss to the Indiana Pacers: – Based on Saturday night’s start, the debate remains whether your best lineup means starting your best players. – An early 25-point deficit will do that. – No, it did not look good. – And it was about more than the early 3-point misses. – It was about how off Norman Powell was. – As in the leading scorer who had kept the Heat afloat amid Tyler Herro’s absences. – Erik Spoelstra often talks about how you have to make the opposition play your game. – But with Kel’el Ware out of...
