Heat don’t have a shot in 98-86 loss in Atlanta, as season turns even more dire

ATLANTA – A microcosm of the season, as in the Miami Heat don’t have a shot? It certainly felt that way in Monday night’s 98-86 loss to the Atlanta Hawks at State Farm Arena, when a made shot practically was reason for celebration and a converted 3-pointer practically an abstract. In falling to 1-6 since trading forward Jimmy Butler to the Golden State Warriors, the Heat this time did not have All-Star guard Tyler Herro carrying the load and therefore found themselves unable to shoulder the load for a second consecutive night. With Herro limited to 11 points a night after scoring 40 in a...

Winderman’s view: Jovic injury a rotation changer for Heat (if not a game changer)

MILWAUKEE — Observations and other notes of interest from Sunday night’s 120-113 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks: – Heat coach Erik Spoelstra spoke pregame about how nothing is necessarily set in his rotation since the team’s overhaul at the NBA trading deadline three weeks ago. – It felt otherwise. – Until a jolt was delivered at halftime. – First, the Heat stayed with their preferred post-trade starting lineup of Bam Adebayo, Andrew Wiggins, Kel’el Ware, Tyler Herro and Davion Mitchell, which entered 1-1. – From there, Nikola Jovic and Duncan Robinson again entered together as the first two...

Tyler Herro’s 40 again not enough as Heat fall 120-113 to Bucks; Jovic injured

MILWAUKEE – The formula for this Miami Heat roster in the post-Jimmy Butler era to beat a team of the Milwaukee Bucks’ caliber is relatively basic: perfection. Sunday night, the Heat got just about that from Tyler Herro, and it still wasn’t enough, while also suffering a debilitating injury to their rotation in what turned into a 120-113 loss to the Bucks at Fiserv Forum. “It’s frustrating,” coach Erik Spoelstra said, “but we’re making some progress and we just have to stay with it. We have to show collective grit and resolve.” Falling again after holding a double-digit second-half lead,...

Duke’s Jai Lucas agrees to take over Miami men’s basketball, contract still pending, AP source says

By TIM REYNOLDS CORAL GABLES — Duke associate head coach Jai Lucas has agreed to become the next head coach at Miami, pending the completion of contract negotiations, a person with knowledge of the matter said Saturday night. Lucas and the Hurricanes will work toward finalizing that contract in the coming weeks, said the person who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because neither side has confirmed any details publicly. Part of those negotiations would include when Lucas would leave the Blue Devils and start with the Hurricanes, whose regular season ends March 8. The...

Former Panthers instrumental as Kraken benefit from controversial call, edge Tkachuk-less Florida

SUNRISE — Former Florida Panther Jared McCann scored the go-ahead goal early in the third period and the Seattle Kraken held on to beat the defending Stanley Cup champions 2-1 on Saturday night. The Kraken was propelled by a questionable goaltender interference call against Evan Rodrigues on a late-second-period goal by  Mackie Samoskevich, which had seemingly given the Panthers a 2-1 lead. Rodrigues was clearly pushed into the goalie crease and kept there by Josh Mahura, who played for Florida last year, as the puck went into the net, but the officials still pulled the goal off the...

Man who kidnapped Lyft driver sentenced to 12 years in prison

A man who kidnapped a Lyft driver in Texas and forced her to drive to South Florida has been sentenced to 12 years in federal prison. Miguel Pastran Hernandez, 24, was arrested in August in Hollywood after the rideshare driver he kidnapped days earlier managed to escape from him. He pleaded guilty in December. On Aug. 16, Pastran Hernandez forced the woman to start driving from the Arlington, Texas, area, to Florida, and armed himself with the woman’s own gun during the trip, according to federal court records. Pastran Hernandez and the woman arrived in Miami Beach two days later. He...

South Florida lobbyist pleads guilty to tax evasion dating to 2005

A West Palm Beach resident with decades of lobbying experience in South Florida has pleaded guilty to tax evasion that dated back to 2005, totaling $1.7 million over the years. Eston Eurel Melton III, known as “Dusty,” was the owner of Global Projects, Inc., a lobbying business that primarily operated in Miami-Dade County. Starting with the 2005 tax year and continuing through 2014, Melton’s debt amassed to $1.2 million, prosecutors said. In that time period, Melton had paid about $62,000 of what he owed, according to the plea agreement in his case. The total increased to $1.7 million with...

Several times he reiterated that he wanted his legacy to be as a peacemaker. “The golden age of America is...

Florida Atlantic hands Hurricanes their first loss of the season

BOCA RATON — After scoring 35 runs in their three-game, season-opening sweep against Niagara over the weekend, the Hurricanes’ bats went cold in Boca Raton. UM scored just one run in a 2-1 loss to Florida Atlantic on Tuesday, dropping their first game of the season. “They did a good job, overall,” Miami coach J.D. Arteaga said. “I guess they gave us a run that first (inning). It was the first game I’ve been a part of where every run was a bases-loaded walk or a hit by pitch. We got in some counts, some favorable counts, and just weren’t aggressive enough. Got beat with some fastballs we...

Cam Ward has answer for anyone who thinks he quit on Miami Hurricanes after breaking TD record in bowl game

By STEPHEN HAWKINS FORT WORTH, Texas — While Cam Ward hasn’t decided if he will throw at the NFL combine next week, the quarterback knows how he will answer any scouts or team personnel who ask him if he quit on the Miami Hurricanes team by not finishing his final game with them. “Okay, you’re either going to draft me or you’re not,” Ward said Monday night before receiving the Davey O’Brien Award as the nation’s top college quarterback. “If you don’t draft me, that’s your fault. You’ve got to remember you’re the same team that’s got to play me for the rest of my career, and I’ll remember...
