Former FAU baseball standout Schanuel gets called up by Angels only 40 days after being drafted

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Florida Atlantic University alumnus Nolan Schanuel reached the majors less than six weeks after being picked 11th overall by the Los Angeles Angels in this year’s amateur draft. On Friday night, Schanuel showed the poise of a veteran in his big-league debut. The 21-year-old infielder was part of the Angels’ first triple play in 26 years, and also had an unassisted double play earlier. Batting leadoff, he went 1 for 4 and scored two runs. Despite the great debut, it still wasn’t enough as the Angels lost 9-6 to the Tampa Bay Rays in 10 innings. “I wouldn’t even say I remember...

The Hurricanes and defensive line coach Jason Taylor tried to land defensive end Elias Rudolph before he committed in July, but Michigan was the blue-chip prospect’s preferred destination. But now Rudolph has changed his mind. The four-star defensive end flipped from Michigan to Miami on Saturday night, announcing his decision on social media. His commitment comes just one day after the Hurricanes landed their first 2025 commit, quarterback Luke Nickel.  Rudolph, who plays for Taft High in Cincinnati, is rated the No. 21 edge rusher and No. 292 player in the 2024 class. He is listed at 6-4 and...

‘Cross that bridge next year’: Malzahn focused on UCF camp, not realignment

In the past week, the future of college athletics changed in a quick and dramatic direction. Pac-12 members Oregon and Washington announced their plans to join the Big Ten next year while Arizona, Utah and Arizona State finalized their move with Colorado to the Big 12 Conference. For UCF coach Gus Malzahn, it was just another week of football practice. “I’m coaching my team,” Malzahn said Sunday when asked about the recent additions to the Big 12. “You wake up and there’s something new.” It’s unclear what the future holds for the remaining Pac-12 schools — Oregon State, Washington State, Stanford...

One of the top hitters in Hurricanes history is likely headed to the pros. The Washington Nationals picked Miami third baseman Yohandy Morales with the 40th pick in the MLB draft on Sunday night. He is the first of several UM players likely to be selected this year.  “(He) turned out to be one of our all-time great players,” former Miami coach Gino DiMare said. “Clutch player. He’s just a great, great teammate that the players looked up to.” Morales, a Miami Braddock High alumnus, will likely receive a large signing bonus to persuade him from returning to Miami for his senior year. The slot...
