Lackluster Gators slip by Charlotte behind stout defense, 5 field goals

GAINESVILLE — Florida’s 22-7 win against Charlotte on Saturday night marked the Gators’ first three-game winning streak under Billy Napier but felt like a hollow victory. It could be a warning sign with SEC play set to ramp up Sept. 30 at Kentucky, winner of three of the past five meetings. “It’s hard to win,” Napier said. “We had to grind that one out. Half the teams in college football lost and the Gators won.  “Are we happy with a lot of the things that went on out there? No.” Napier’s squad failed to build on the momentum of an emotional and resounding 29-16 win against Tennessee but dispatched...

Altmyer bounces back as Illinois, down by 10, rallies past FAU

By STEVE STEIN (Associated Press) CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Luke Altmyer threw a touchdown pass and ran for another and Isaiah Williams caught eight passes for 120 yards to lead Illinois to a 23-17 win over Florida Atlantic in a non-conference game Saturday. It was a bounce-back game for Altmyer, who threw four interceptions in the 30-13 loss to Penn State last week and was benched in the fourth quarter. He completed 25 of 36 passes for 303 yards and wasn’t picked off. Florida Atlantic’s Daniel Richardson, in his first start after Casey Thompson suffered a season-ending ACL tear, completed 28 of 49...

UCF rolls over Villanova in QB Timmy McClain’s debut

It’s been nearly two years since quarterback Timmy McClain last started a game, so forgive the 21-year-old if there was a bit of rust to his game. His last start came against UCF when the Sanford Seminole High product played for rival USF and he nearly led the Bulls to an upset win. McClain was back at FBC Mortgage Stadium on Saturday night, but this time with the Knights after transferring last year. He was thrust into the starting job after John Rhys Plumlee suffered a leg injury in the team’s win at Boise State last week. This time, he was on the winning end as UCF jumped out to a 34-0 halftime...

Florida earns significant SEC-opening win against Tennessee

GAINESVILLE — Quarterback Graham Mertz could not miss, Trevor Etienne could not be contained and Tennessee’s high-powered offense could not contend with an inspired, sold-out Swamp as the Gators seized control and then held on for an SEC-opening win. It added up to a 29-16 decision against No. 11 Vols and a long-awaited SEC signature win for embattled coach Billy Napier. Coach Josh Heupel’s Vols’ rallied but could not overcome mistakes and missed opportunities. An offsides penalty by defensive tackle Kurott Garland with UF facing fourth-and-1 from its 34-yard line extended the Gators’ drive...

Thompson throws five TD passes for Florida Atlantic in reunion with coach Tom Herman

BOCA RATON — Nebraska transfer Casey Thompson threw five touchdown passes, one of them a 72-yard hookup with Tony Johnson, and Florida Atlantic routed Monmouth 42-20 on Saturday night to usher in the Tom Herman era. Thompson, who also played at Texas, where Herman was his coach, completed 20 of 25 passes for 280 yards. His five TD passes match the school record. Ja’Quan Burton also had two touchdown catches. Casey...

Hurricanes begin season by roaring to almost 500 yards in rout of Miami (Ohio)

MIAMI GARDENS — Year 2 of the Mario Cristobal Era started with a bang. Three plays into the game, Hurricanes quarterback Tyler Van Dyke connected with wide receiver Colbie Young for a 44-yard touchdown on a screen pass. UM was off and running from the first drive, opening the season with a 38-3 victory over Miami (Ohio) at Hard Rock Stadium on Friday. The Hurricanes’ offense did not score with quite as much speed as the first half went on, having to settle for three field goals as drives stopped in the red zone in the first half. But the offense picked back up in the second half and finished...

UCF’s John Rhys Plumlee sparks Knights to blowout win over Kent State

It was far from a perfect performance, but UCF was efficient in its season opener, rolling past Kent State, 56-6 Thursday night at FBC Mortgage Stadium. The win was the perfect way for the Knights to start their first season in the Big 12 vs. a nonconference opponent. Quarterback John Rhys Plumlee accounted for four touchdowns but had three turnovers as UCF (1-0, 0-0 Big 12) amassed 723 yards of offense against the Golden Flashes (0-1, 0-0 MAC). It was the most yards in a game since the Knights totaled 737 yards against Temple on Oct. 13. Stephen M. Dowell/Orlando SentinelUCF quarterback John...

Former FAU baseball standout Schanuel gets called up by Angels only 40 days after being drafted

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Florida Atlantic University alumnus Nolan Schanuel reached the majors less than six weeks after being picked 11th overall by the Los Angeles Angels in this year’s amateur draft. On Friday night, Schanuel showed the poise of a veteran in his big-league debut. The 21-year-old infielder was part of the Angels’ first triple play in 26 years, and also had an unassisted double play earlier. Batting leadoff, he went 1 for 4 and scored two runs. Despite the great debut, it still wasn’t enough as the Angels lost 9-6 to the Tampa Bay Rays in 10 innings. “I wouldn’t even say I remember...
