Todd Golden’s Gators eager to test themselves against FSU in rivalry matchup

GAINESVILLE — Florida point guard Zyon Pullin is a San Francisco Bay Area native new to the Sunshine State, but he’s had Friday night’s visit from Florida State marked on his calendar. Pullin’s first appearance for the Gators (2-1) arrives during a heated rivalry game where cooler heads might need to prevail against the Seminoles (2-0). Down the stretch of last Friday’s 73-70 loss to national power Virginia, UF could have used Pullin, suspended by the NCAA for the first three games for participating in an offseason NBA Draft showcase for players who’d exhausted their eligibility. A couple of...

No. 10 FAU starts fast, rolls past Eastern Michigan in home opener

By TIM REYNOLDS BOCA RATON — Vladislav Goldin scored 19 points, Brandon Weatherspoon added 16 while not missing a shot, and No. 10 Florida Atlantic eased past Eastern Michigan 100-57 on Tuesday night. Giancarlo Rosado and Brenen Lorent each scored 13 points for the Owls (2-0), who were playing for the first time with last season’s Final Four banner swaying over the court. FAU extended the nation’s second-longest home winning streak to 19 games, and shot 63% on the way to finishing with six players in double figures. Only UCLA has a longer current home streak than the Owls. The Bruins — winners...

By TIM REYNOLDS CORAL GABLES — Matthew Cleveland scored 23 points, Bensley Joseph and Wooga Poplar each added 18 and No. 12 Miami rallied from a 12-point second-half deficit to beat neighboring FIU 86-80 on Monday night. Nigel Pack scored 17 points and Norchad Omier had 11 rebounds for the Hurricanes (3-0), who won a game with wild back-and-forth momentum swings. Arturo Dean scored 19 for FIU (0-3), while Dashon Gittens added 14 and Javaunte Hawkins had 11. The Panthers fell to 0-25 all-time against ranked opponents — and, playing a road game nine miles from their own campus, had a big chance...

3 things learned from No. 4 FSU’s home victory over Miami

By Bob Ferrante Orlando Sentinel Correspondent TALLAHASSEE — Florida State didn’t win a rivalry game in the 2018, ’19 and ’20 seasons. Now the Seminoles are a victory away from a sweep of Clemson, Miami and Florida — which the program hasn’t done since 2014. Jarrian Jones’ fourth-down interception of Tyler Van Dyke halted Miami’s upset bid and gave the Seminoles a 27-20 win on Saturday night, Florida State’s third straight victory in the series. “It’s just so big for the program, so big for our fan base, the university, everybody involved,” FSU coach Mike Norvell said. “I’m just proud of these...

Wooga Poplar scores 23 points to lead No. 13 Miami to 88-72 win over UCF

CORAL GABLES — Wooga Poplar scored 23 points to lead No. 13 Miami to an 88-72 win over UCF on Friday night. Poplar, a junior guard, shot 6 for 8 from the field and was perfect on five 3-point attempts. Norchad Omier had 19 points and 12 rebounds, Bensley Joseph scored 15 points, Matthew Cleveland added 12 and Nijel Pack 11 for the Hurricanes (2-0), who never trailed. The Knights (1-1) rallied from an 18-point deficit early in the second half and got to within six points at 68-62 on Demarr Langford Jr.’s jumper with 6: 11 remaining. But Miami countered with seven unanswered points, capped by...

Florida braced to face LSU star QB Jayden Daniels when Gators visit Tiger Stadium

Florida football’s struggling defense will likely have to face LSU star quarterback Jayden Daniels, after all. After three days in concussion protocol, Daniels was set for a non-contact practice Wednesday, coach Brian Kelly said on the SEC teleconference. Barring any setbacks, Daniels would practice at full capacity Thursday. Kelly did not commit to starting Daniels, the nation’s top-rated passer, over Garrett Nussmeier, the son of former Gators’ offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier. But while younger Nussmeier is capable, Daniels is a Heisman candidate. The 6-foot-4, 210-pound senior leads...

How can UCF contain Oklahoma State’s Ollie Gordon? | Analysis

There’s little doubt that UCF’s Achilles’ heel has been its run defense. The Knights are No. 127 out of 133 Football Bowl Subdivision teams after allowing 211.8 rushing yards in their nine games. A closer look shows those numbers grow exponentially against Big 12 competition, with the team allowing 259 yards through six games. Much of those yards have come on plays of 10-plus yards in which UCF has allowed 65. Twenty-two of those runs have been explosive plays (20-plus yards). In the win against Cincinnati last week, the Bearcats had five explosive plays, with one coming in the second half....

Miami Hurricanes begin season with rout of NJIT

CORAL GABLES — Seven months after concluding the most successful season in program history, the Hurricanes returned to the Watsco Center court and opened the 2023-24 season with a bang. Junior Wooga Poplar paced Miami with 23 points in a season-opening, 101-60 victory over the New Jersey Institute of Technology Monday night. “I thought that was a very good opening night for us,” UM coach Jim Larrañaga said.”A lot of guys played. A lot of guys played well. … We shared the ball very well. We ended up with 23 assists, and we scored the ball from three, from two, in fast breaks. So it was a good...

3 things learned from FSU’s victory at Pittsburgh

By Bob Ferrante Orlando Sentinel Correspondent While not truly a defined step in Florida State’s journey in 2023, the moment wasn’t lost on those Seminoles who had been with the program through the low points: They could now celebrate a spot in the ACC championship game after a 24-7 win at Pittsburgh on Saturday. “I almost want to cry because we’ve put so much work from my first time getting here to where we are now,” redshirt senior linebacker Kalen DeLoach said. “I appreciate all those guys who came in and bought into the process because it wasn’t pretty all the time.” Here are three things...

No. 4 Florida State earns spot in ACC title game by pulling away at Pitt

By WILL GRAVES Associated Press PITTSBURGH — Ja’Khi Douglas was there during the dark days at Florida State when the losses piled up and the program’s reputation as a national power seemed like a distant memory. Those days are over. The fourth-ranked Seminoles (9-0, 7-0 ACC) are returning to the ACC title game for the first time in nearly a decade after pulling away from Pittsburgh (2-7, 1-4) for a 24-7 win on Saturday evening. “Since I’ve been here four years, we’ve been through ups and downs,” said Douglas, a redshirt junior wide receiver who caught a career-high six passes for 115 yards while...
