Suspect at large after stabbing in Coconut Creek nature preserve, police say

A suspect remained at large after a Saturday afternoon stabbing at a nature preserve in Coconut Creek, according to police. A male victim was airlifted to the hospital and is in serious condition. The stabbing took place on a walking trail near the 4900 block of Hilton Road, according to Coconut Creek Police Sgt. Scotty Leamon. The male suspect then fled into the woods. Marlins, leading in sixth inning in pursuit of doubleheader sweep, see bullpen falter vs. Cubs in nightcap

By SARAH TROTTO (Associated Press) CHICAGO (AP) — Cody Bellinger and Alexander Canario homered and the Chicago Cubs beat the Miami Marlins 5-3 on Saturday night to earn a split of the day-night doubleheader. In the opener, Bryan De La Cruz hit a two-run homer off Adbert Alzolay in the ninth inning, and the Marlins beat the Cubs 3-2. Shota Imanaga (3-0) gave up three runs, two earned, in six innings in the nightcap for the Cubs, who have won six of their last seven games. Imanaga’s scoreless streak to begin his major league career ended in the fourth inning at 18 2/3 innings. Héctor Neris worked...

Winderman’s view: Duncan Robinson’s return also a win for the Heat

MIAMI — Observations and other notes of interest from Friday night’s 112-91 NBA play-in victory over the Chicago Bulls: – No, not necessarily among Friday night’s biggest storylines on a night the Heat found their way to victory in the absences of Jimmy Butler and Terry Rozier. – Certainly not bigger than Tyler Herro’s effort. – But perhaps among the most significant. – Because to compete against the Celtics, it likely will have to come over the top from the Heat. – As in the shooting of Duncan Robinson. – While not necessarily up to full speed, merely having Robinson on the court at least presents...

Butler-less Heat batter Bulls 112-91 behind a Herro takeover, with Celtics challenge up next

MIAMI – Immediate challenge conquered. Greater challenge ahead. Pushing past the Chicago Bulls a day after learning team leader Jimmy Butler would be lost for weeks with a knee injury, the reward for the Miami Heat for Friday night’s 112-91 win-or-go-home play-in victory is a first-round matchup against the league-best Boston Celtics. On a night offense was a struggle at times for both teams, the Heat turned up the defense to essentially salvage their season. Something more, far more, will be required against the Celtics, with that best-of-seven series opening Sunday at 1 p.m. at TD Garden. “I...

US deports about 50 Haitians to nation hit with gang violence, ending monthslong pause in flights

By GISELA SALOMON and ELLIOT SPAGAT (Associated Press) MIAMI (AP) — The Biden administration sent about 50 Haitians back to their country on Thursday, authorities said, marking the first deportation flight in several months to the Caribbean nation struggling with surging gang violence. The Homeland Security Department said in a statement that it “will continue to enforce U.S. laws and policy throughout the Florida Straits and and the Caribbean region, as well as at the southwest border. U.S. policy is to return noncitizens who do not establish a legal basis to remain in the United States.” Authorities...

Hostage families hold mock seder to demand: Let our people go!

(JNS) Families of Israelis still being held hostage by Hamas in the Gaza Strip gathered in Kibbutz Nir Oz’s bullet-riddled dining hall on April 11 for a mock seder to demand the return of their loved ones ahead of Passover, which commemorates the biblical exodus from Egypt and the Jewish people’s deliverance from bondage. The hall contained empty yellow chairs (the color associated with the campaign to free the hostages) with pictures of each of the 133 hostages still being held by the terror group, alongside empty plates and cutlery, similar to the iconic exhibit in Tel Aviv’s Hostages Square. Chabad rabbi-rapper reaches top of the charts in Israel

Rabbi Moshe Reuven Sheradsky, 31, has hit the No. 1 spot on the Israeli musical charts with his song “Red and Yellow.” He spoke with JNS about the spiritual influences on his music and whether the antisemitism of Ye (formerly known as Kanye West) signified a potential trend in hip-hop. Dave Hyde: Jimmy Butler goes down and the Miami Heat can’t hold up without him

The blow that ultimately turned out the lights on the Miami Heat on Wednesday, and probably beyond, came late in the first quarter and not those final, frantic seconds at the end of the game. Jimmy Butler went up for a shot then under the basket and landed awkwardly on the extended leg of Philadelphia’s Kelly Oubre. Butler lay like a fallen oak on the floor in pain that was mirrored on the televised faces of Heat president Pat Riley and its vice president of scowling, Alonzo Mourning. Heat coach Erik Spoelstra, looking for some karmic justice, asked the refs what happened there in harder language. Butler...

Winderman’s view: Heat still in search of offense as clock ticks toward possible expiration

PHILADELPHIA – Observations and other notes of interest from Wednesday night’s 105-104 NBA play-in loss to the Philadelphia 76ers: – The zone defense was energizing and effective. – The effort on that end of the floor was undeniable. – Could not have been much better. – But you also have to score. – Which made this much like the Heat’s season. – Heart and hustle will get you to places such as the play-in. – Points will put you over the top. – This is why the Heat got Terry Rozier. – And this is why the Heat badly missed Rozier in this one. – Tyler Herro couldn’t make a shot until late. – Jimmy...
