MEMPHIS – The expiration date of Miami Heat plans to play at pace typically is somewhere along the lines of the first week of the season.
Bully Ball-or-bust has been the touchstone for so long, anything else seems out of character.
And then came Friday night and Erik Spoelstra’s team was nothing short of a perpetual motion machine in what evolved into a resounding 146-114 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies at FedExForum, the third-highest-scoring game in the franchise’s 38 seasons.
There were 44 points in the first quarter.
Then 86 at halftime.
This wasn’t just shots falling at high clip,...

Winderman’s view: Ware (solely) as an Adebayo understudy it is for Heat in opening loss
ORLANDO — Observations and other notes of interest from Wednesday night’s 125-121 loss to the Orlando Magic:
– The previous math, the one we mostly saw in the preseason, appears to be back.
– Even after a statistically dominant preseason by Kel’el Ware.
– Even after coach Erik Spoelstra stressed how willing a pupil Ware has been.
– In Wednesday night’s first half, either Bam Adebayo or Ware.
– But neither together, with Adebayo playing 16 minutes over the first two quarters, Ware the other eight.
– And so it went through the Heat’s high-energy opener.
– Playing out the same way in the...
Heat come up short 125-121 to Magic in opener, despite Powell’s 28
ORLANDO – At the start, it was off to the races, 77 total points in the first quarter, 134 in the first half.
In no way did this resemble anything even close to Miami Heat vs. Orlando Magic.
And then Wednesday night’s season opener at Kia Center turned into something more along the lines of they are what they thought they are.
With less sizzle with the shooting and more determination by the defense, the Magic outlasted the Heat 125-121, with their offensive rebounding proving to be the difference, just as it was in the Heat’s two preseason losses to Orlando.
That’s not to say it wasn’t the...

Marchand has 2 assists to help Panthers win in his emotional return to Boston
By JIMMY GOLEN

Boston rallied to tie it after trailing 2-0 lead in the third period, then Marchand skated through the neutral zone and flipped the puck ahead to Eetu Luostarinen as he burst ahead of the last defender and beat Jeremy Swayman to make it 3-2 with 10 minutes to play.
With the Boston net empty, Morgan Geekie made it 3-3 with 1:31 left. But Verhaeghe broke the tie with 27 seconds to...
