BSO detective accused of not fully investigating sex crimes, threatening a victim with deportation

A veteran Broward Sheriff’s detective was arrested Tuesday on charges of official misconduct and extortion after an investigation found he had falsified information in numerous sex crime cases and closed the cases without fully investigating them, the Sheriff’s Office said. Det. Demetrious Campbell, 48, has been with the Sheriff’s Office since 2002. He is now suspended without pay, and investigators are reviewing many of his cases, Veda Coleman-Wright, a spokesperson for the Sheriff’s Office, said in a news release Tuesday evening. Concerns about Campbell surfaced in early April after a sexual...

Biden: Debt meeting ‘productive,’ default ‘not an option’

By ZEKE MILLER, SEUNG MIN KIM, JOSH BOAK and LISA MASCARO (Associated Press) WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden and congressional leaders confronted each other on the debt limit impasse Tuesday, ending their meeting with no breakthrough but agreeing to meet again this week to try to avert the looming risk of an unprecedented government default. Speaking at the White House, Biden described the talks as “productive” even though House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said after the high-stakes Oval Office meeting that he “didn’t see any new movement” toward resolving the stalemate. Lawmakers and their...

Jury finds Trump liable for sexual abuse, awards accuser $5M

By LARRY NEUMEISTER, JENNIFER PELTZ and MICHAEL R. SISAK (Associated Press) NEW YORK (AP) — A jury found Donald Trump liable Tuesday for sexually abusing advice columnist E. Jean Carroll in 1996, awarding her $5 million in a judgment that could haunt the former president as he campaigns to regain the White House. The verdict was split: Jurors rejected Carroll’s claim that she was raped, finding Trump responsible for a lesser degree of sexual abuse. The judgment adds to Trump’s legal woes and offers vindication to Carroll, whose allegations had been mocked and dismissed by Trump for years. She...

Driver in deadly Texas crash charged with manslaughter

By VALERIE GONZALEZ (Associated Press) BROWNSVILLE, Texas (AP) — An SUV driver who killed eight people when he slammed into a group waiting at a bus stop in Brownsville, Texas, was charged with manslaughter, police said Monday as investigators tried to determine if the crash was intentional. Authorities believe driver George Alvarez, 34, of Brownsville, lost control after running a red light Sunday morning, and plowed into a crowd outside a migrant center in the city, which has long been an epicenter for migration across the U.S.-Mexico border. Police Chief Felix Sauceda said Alvarez was charged...

Hyde5: Lowry, Heat’s bench come up big against Knicks in Game 4 win

On a night the stars on both teams put up numbers, Game 4 was decided by a place the Miami Heat remains surprisingly (and strategically) strong: The bench. The Heat lost Tyler Herro and Victor Oladipo to injury earlier these playoffs. Coach Erik Spoelstra still played 10 players in the Heat’s 109-101 win and the impact was obvious. Heat bench scoring: 32 points. Knicks bench: 10 points. There’s your game, folks. That’s the short answer to why the Heat moved to a 3-1 lead and one win from the Eastern Conference finals. Kyle Lowry continues to be Playoff Kyle, or Healthy Kyle, with 15 points,...

How the legend of ‘Lead Us Kevin’ became the Miami Heat’s ultimate talking point

MIAMI – The legend of “Lead Us Kevin” dates only to late February, but it already has become lore in the Miami Heat locker room, replete with accompanying T-shirts. It also has spawned “Lead Us Max” and “Lead Us Kyle” and, this past Saturday, “Lead Us Cody.” But the leading man with the team’s new catchphrase is veteran power forward Kevin Love and it started in the most innocuous fashion by the most trite of comments from assistant coach Chris Quinn. “It was like a shooting drill that Chris Quinn was  running in practice,” Heat forward Max Strus told the Sun Sentinel ahead of Monday night’s...

By JAKE BLEIBERG, MICHAEL BALSAMO and JAMIE STENGLE (Associated Press) ALLEN, Texas (AP) — Federal officials were looking into whether the gunman who killed eight people at a Dallas-area mall expressed an interest in white supremacist ideology Sunday as they work to try to discern a motive for the attack, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press. The official cautioned the investigation is in its early stages. Federal agents have been reviewing social media accounts they believe Mauricio Garcia, 33, used and posts that expressed interest in white supremacist and neo-Nazi views, said...

By JAKE BLEIBERG and REBECCA BOONE (Associated Press) ALLEN, Texas (AP) — A gunman killed eight people and wounded seven others – three critically – in a shooting at a Dallas-area mall before being fatally shot by a police officer who happened to be nearby, authorities said Saturday. Authorities did not immediately provide details about the victims, but witnesses reported seeing children among them. Some said they also saw what appeared to be a police officer and a mall security guard unconscious on the ground. The shooting was the latest episode of gun violence to strike the country. It sent...
