House OKs debt ceiling bill to avoid default, sends Biden-McCarthy deal to Senate

By LISA MASCARO, KEVIN FREKING, STEPHEN GROVES and FARNOUSH AMIRI (Associated Press) WASHINGTON (AP) — Veering away from a default crisis, the House approved a debt ceiling and budget cuts package late Wednesday, as President Joe Biden and Speaker Kevin McCarthy assembled a bipartisan coalition of centrist Democrats and Republicans against fierce conservative blowback and progressive dissent. The hard-fought deal pleased few, but lawmakers assessed it was better than the alternative — a devastating economic upheaval if Congress failed to act. Tensions ran high throughout the day as hard-right...

In Canada, each cigarette will get a warning label: ‘poison in every puff’

By ROB GILLIES (Associated Press) TORONTO (AP) — Canada will soon become the first country in the world where warning labels must appear on individual cigarettes. The move was first announced last year by Health Canada and is aimed at helping people quit the habit. The regulations take effect Aug. 1 and will be phased in. King-size cigarettes will be the first to feature the warnings and will be sold in stores by the end of July 2024, followed by regular-size cigarettes, and little cigars with tipping paper and tubes by the end of April 2025. “This bold step will make health warning messages...

North Korea fails on attempt to launch its first spy satellite

By HYUNG-JIN KIM and KIM TONG-HYUNG (Associated Press) SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea’s attempt to put the country’s first spy satellite into space failed Wednesday in a setback to leader Kim Jong Un’s push to boost his military capabilities as tensions with the United States and South Korea rise. After its unusually quick admission of failure, North Korea vowed to conduct a second launch after learning what went wrong with its rocket liftoff. It suggests Kim remains determined to expand his weapons arsenal to apply more pressure on Washington and Seoul while diplomacy is stalled. A...

By STEVE PEOPLES, HANNAH FINGERHUT and THOMAS BEAUMONT (Associated Press) CLIVE, Iowa (AP) — Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis stepped into Iowa on Tuesday for the first time as a Republican presidential candidate and stepped up to Donald Trump, vowing to “fight back” against the former president as the GOP’s 2024 campaign enters a new phase. Until now, the 44-year-old Republican governor whose slogan is “Never Back Down” had largely avoided any direct confrontation with Trump, his chief Republican rival, who has in turn unleashed a torrent of fierce attacks against DeSantis for much of the year. DeSantis...

Winderman’s view: Caleb Martin the energizer money as Heat cash ticket to NBA Finals

BOSTON – Observations and other notes of interest from Monday night’s 103-84 NBA playoff victory over the Boston Celtics: – At one point in the Eastern Conference finals, the question was if Heat forward Caleb Martin was the best value player in the series, in light of the three-year, $20.4 million contract he signed last summer. – By the end of the East finals, the question was whether he was the best player in the series. – As in a series that also included Jimmy Butler, Bam Adebayo, Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. – Remarkable stuff. – Sometimes it’s about more than star power. – Sometimes...

Next stop a Rocky Mountain high for Heat in NBA Finals after 103-84 gutsy victory in Boston

BOSTON – Six weeks after standing within minutes of missing the playoffs, the Miami Heat are headed to the NBA Finals for the seventh time in the franchise’s 35 seasons and the sixth time since 2011 under coach Erik Spoelstra. The improbable, implausible, seemingly impossible rolls on, next stop a Rocky Mountain high for Thursday’s start of the league’s championship series against the Western Conference champion Denver Nuggets. Making their most emphatic statement of a postseason that already had ended the seasons of the No. 1 Milwaukee Bucks and No. 5 New York Knicks, the Heat went into TD...

Marlins sweep Angels to complete long road trip at 5-5, come home two games over .500

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Eury Pérez struck out Shohei Ohtani and Mike Trout early in his fourth major league start. He then retired Trout on a long fly to strand two Angels runners with his final pitch, and the big 20-year-old rookie clapped his glove in celebration all the way to the dugout. Pérez’s fourth major league start was his most promising yet, and the Miami Marlins’ bullpen was just as good while they completed an encouraging series sweep on the West Coast. Nick Fortes homered and doubled, Pérez pitched five innings of two-hit ball and the Marlins concluded their 10-game road trip Sunday...

No one fights alone: Colleagues support longtime BSO flight medic left blinded, unable to walk by sudden illness

Longtime Broward County firefighter and paramedic Eric DeLotta has spent his career rescuing people in trouble and helping to train his colleagues. Earlier this month, it was DeLotta, 57, who needed to be rescued, and now he’s leaning on Broward’s fire-rescue brotherhood for support during his long road to recovery from a debilitating health setback. The man who excelled in a job that requires peak physical conditioning and razor-sharp awareness now finds himself almost totally blind and unable to walk, get out of bed, or even dial a phone on his own, according to his wife, Renee DeLotta. He’s...
