Remembering the tropical zen of Jimmy Buffett in South Florida

If you want to trace the end of COVID as a life-altering menace in South Florida to a single moment, it would be shortly after 8 p.m. on May 13, 2021, when Jimmy Buffett strode onstage at Old School Square in downtown Delray Beach.  Looking relaxed and tanned, in the unofficial uniform of South Florida — tropical shirt and khaki shorts — Buffett’s arrival induced an immediate standing ovation from a wildly expectant crowd of folks from across the country sequestered in pod seating on that early summer evening.  It was the first of four Buffett concerts and the first locally by any superstar...

‘Plane down:’ 911 caller reports deadly crash at North Perry Airport | Listen

The first person to call 911 on Friday afternoon to report the crash of a Cessna 172 at the North Perry Airport said he hadn’t seen anyone get out of the plane. Flight instructor Felipe Becerra Cardenas, of Pembroke Pines, was flying the small single-engine aircraft with two passengers aboard, who were on a “discovery flight,” intended to interest the passengers in becoming pilots. Hall was the...

‘The problem has become monstrous’: Rescue groups struggle to save bunnies invading Wilton Manors

Until very recently, dozens of bunnies were hopping around the Jenada Isles neighborhood of Wilton Manors, digging holes, chewing on grass and eating carrots out of people’s hands. But for the rescue workers trying to capture them, the situation was far from something out of a children’s book. They say people threatened to shoot them, followed them on foot and in slow-moving cars, honked horns and cursed at them, filmed and took pictures of them and even chased the rabbits away from rescue workers in order to prevent their capture. Meanwhile, the bunnies are in desperate need of medical attention,...

By ERIC TUCKER, ALANNA DURKIN RICHER and ADRIANA GOMEZ LICON (Associated Press) MIAMI (AP) — Donald Trump became the first former president to face a judge on federal charges as he pleaded not guilty in a Miami courtroom Tuesday to dozens of felony counts accusing him of hoarding classified documents and refusing government demands to give them back. The man who excelled in a job that requires peak physical conditioning and razor-sharp awareness now finds himself almost totally blind and unable to walk, get out of bed, or even dial a phone on his own, according to his wife, Renee DeLotta. He’s...

County Commission votes on GL Homes swap

A controversial land swap that would enable the development of 1,000 luxury homes in Palm Beach County’s Agricultural Reserve received initial support from the Board of Commissioners Wednesday night. The 5-2 vote was a major victory for GL Homes, one of the leading residential developers in Palm Beach County. It also signals a major change to the Ag Reserve, which county voters overwhelmingly agreed in 1999 to keep mostly rural. The approval now goes to the state for review and will come back to the commission Aug. 30 for final adoption. “We are pleased the Palm Beach County Commission saw merit...
