The Florida Gators haven’t lost a season-opening game at home since 1989 when, coincidentally, the coach back then – Galen Hall – was fired four games later.
This is not to say Billy Napier will be fired as UF’s coach anytime soon, but Saturday’s humiliating 41-17 season-opening blowout loss to the 19th-ranked Miami Hurricanes at the Swamp certainly didn’t instill much confidence that Napier’s team will be any better this year than it’s been in his first two losing seasons at UF.
“Miami outplayed us and they outcoached us,” a disappointed Napier said afterward. “It’s embarrassing to be...
FAU puts scare into Michigan State in East Lansing but rally falls short
By LARRY LAGE
EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Kay’Ron Lynch-Adams had a 63-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter and Michigan State barely beat Florida Atlantic 16-10 Friday night.
The Spartans (1-0) were sloppy in coach Jonathan Smith’s debut.
Aidan Chiles threw an interception on the game’s opening snap, recovered his fumble to end the second drive and Montorie Foster Jr. lost the football on Michigan State’s third drive.
It didn’t go much smoother in the second half.
Chiles had a chance to put the Spartans ahead by more than two touchdowns late in the third quarter, but Ed Woods...
Trump says he’ll vote to uphold Florida abortion ban after seeming to signal he’d support repeal
By MICHELLE L. PRICE
NEW YORK (AP) — Former President Donald Trump on Friday said he will vote no on a Florida ballot measure that would repeal the state’s six-week abortion ban, a day after he seemed to indicate he would vote in favor of the measure.
Trump has said he thinks Florida’s ban is a mistake and said in an interview with Fox News Channel on Friday, “I think six weeks, you need more time.” But then he said, “at the same time, the Democrats are radical,” and he repeated false claims he has frequently made about late-term abortions and said that he opposed allowing abortions up...
RJ Harvey takes off in UCF’s season-opening rout of New Hampshire
UCF coach Gus Malzahn said Thursday’s season-opener against New Hampshire would say more about the Knights than their opponent.
While the boxscore says UCF came away with a 57-3 win over the Wildcats, its ninth straight win in season openers, the intangibles said more about this team.
UCF improved to 35-10 all-time in season openers, with the Knights having won nine consecutive since 2016.
Tailback RJ Harvey picked up where he left off last season, rushing for 142 yards and 2 touchdowns. It was his third straight 100-yard rushing performance for the fifth-year senior, dating to last...
Trump says he will vote that Florida needs ‘more than 6 weeks’ for abortion
Former President Donald Trump didn’t exactly say how he would vote on a Florida amendment that would protect abortion access — but on Thursday he said he would “be voting that we need more than six weeks.”
Florida currently bans most abortions after six weeks of pregnancy, a change that Gov. Ron DeSantis signed into law in 2023. Trump has previously called Florida’s six-week ban a “terrible mistake.”
When an NBC News reporter asked Trump how he would vote on Florida’s abortion amendment, Trump reiterated that he thought the six-week cutoff was too short. When the reporter followed by asking...
UF top rusher Montrell Johnson Jr. returns for Gators against No. 19 Miami
GAINESVILLE — Florida will have veteran tailback Montrell Johnson Jr. back in the lineup to challenge Miami’s talented defensive front when the Gators host the No. 19 Hurricanes Saturday in the Swamp.
Johnson underwent minor knee surgery during the first week of fall camp, jeopardizing the start of his senior season. But the team’s leading rusher in 2022 and 2023 has been taking practice reps and sits atop the team’s depth chart released Wednesday.
“He’s ready to go,” coach Billy Napier said.
The Gators’ depth at tailback provides options, but the 5-foot-11 ¼ 216-pound Johnson offers...
Do Gators have answers to questions that will posed by No. 19 Hurricanes? | Analysis
GAINESVILLE — Florida’s visit from No. 19 Miami on Saturday in the Swamp has a make-or-break feel.
A victory would provide season-opening optimism for Billy Napier. A loss would rekindle doomsday scenarios for the third-year coach.
Neither result or reaction might have staying power against a schedule featuring seven subsequent preseason Top-25 foes. But perception is reality when a program is coming consecutive losing seasons featuring just two wins in 11 meetings with ranked opponents.
“We understand,” Napier said. “One of the things about this group of players: They’ve got pretty good...
‘Save our parks!’: Protesters rally against controversial state parks proposal
Protesters gathered on Tuesday in Miami-Dade and other parts of Florida to voice outrage at the state’s plan to install golf, pickleball, 350-room hotels and other attractions to various state parks.
At Oleta River State Park in North Miami Beach, a crowd of 120 or so people gathered to voice their opposition. Similar protests took place Tuesday at other parks and the state DEP headquarters in Tallahassee.
The plans for Florida’s Great Outdoors Initiative were released last week, instantly drawing a bipartisan public uproar.
Many opponents were left questioning why the Florida Department of...
Forecasters track new Atlantic disturbance that could develop
After a brief lull in the Atlantic since Hurricane Ernesto, forecasters are monitoring for a new potential disturbance to develop in the central Atlantic.
An area of low pressure could develop in the central Atlantic in the next few days, the National Hurricane Center said Monday night. The environment is expected to be favorable for it to slowly develop by the weekend and early next week.
The disturbance is forecast to move west-northwest between 10 to 15 mph. As of 8 p.m., it has a 20% chance of developing in the next seven days.
Experts at Colorado State University issued a new forecast...
Judge in Texas orders pause on Biden program that offers legal status to spouses of US citizens
By VALERIE GONZALEZ
McALLEN, Texas (AP) — A federal judge in Texas on Monday paused a Biden administration policy that would give spouses of U.S. citizens legal status without having to first leave the country, dealing at least a temporary setback to one of the biggest presidential actions to ease a path to citizenship in years.
The administrative stay issued by U.S. District Judge J. Campbell Barker comes just days after 16 states, led by Republican attorneys general, challenged the program that could benefit an estimated 500,000 immigrants in the country, plus about 50,000 of their...
