NHL-best Capitals beat the defending champion Panthers 6-3

WASHINGTON — Tom Wilson scored his 31st goal of the season, Alex Ovechkin had a pair of assists and the Washington Capitals beat the defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers 6-3 on Saturday to win their fourth game in a row and pad their lead atop the NHL. Wilson set up Connor McMichael’s opening goal in the first period before scoring his own 7 seconds after the ensuing intermission. Dylan Strome scoring 52 seconds later made it eight goals combined between the teams in the first 21 minutes of a high-event game largely lacking in defense. Anthony Beauvillier, John Carlson and Andrew...

Heat slide reaches 10 with leads again botched in 102-98 loss to surging Rockets

MIAMI – No, not the type of double digits of choice. But the double digits of reality. So make it a 10-game losing streak for the Miami Heat, this time done in by an opponent with a streak of its own, the Houston Rockets extending their winning streak to nine with a 102-98 decision Friday night at Kaseya Center. At 29-41, it officially means the Heat will go without a winning season for the first time since 2018-19, when they closed 39-43. Combined with the Orlando Magic’s Friday night victory over the Washington Wizards, it makes it further likely that the Heat will be playing in the...

No. 5 Florida State slugs six home runs to cruise to series-opening victory over Hurricanes

CORAL GABLES — The Miami Hurricanes’ baseball series opener against rival Florida State started badly and only got worse. The Hurricanes (13-10, 0-4 ACC) gave up three runs to the Seminoles (19-2, 4-0 ACC) in the first inning and fell 14-1 in a seven-inning, run-rule defeat at Mark Light Stadium in Coral Gables on Thursday night, dropping the first game of a three-game set. Miami has lost seven of its last nine games after starting the season 11-3. “We’ve got to play better, though, in all aspects,” UM coach J.D. Arteaga said. “In all aspects. We’ve got to hit better, we’ve got to pitch...

Winderman’s view: With Heat at a loss, it’s hard to run an offense with no one to run an offense

MIAMI — Observations and other notes of interest from Wednesday night’s 116-113 loss to the Detroit Pistons: – This wasn’t about getting beaten by a banked-in 3-pointer. – It wasn’t about balls bouncing the wrong way. – And as much as the points in the paint hurt, and as much as the defense could have done more . . . – This was about again being unable to run offense when needed most. – This time 20 points in the fourth quarter. – Sound familiar? – Is there a point guard in the house? – As we seemingly have asked over and over and over. – It wasn’t until Bam Adebayo found Kel’el Ware with...

And it gets worse: Cade Cunningham banks in 3-pointer for 116-113 Pistons win, extending Heat skid to nine

MIAMI — The search for a win, any win, continues. Something that last happened for the Miami Heat on March 3. For a team that often talks about relief points, not enough were forthcoming for Erik Spoelstra’s team in Wednesday night’s 116-113 loss to the Detroit Pistons at Kaseya Center, a game decided by a banked-in 3-pointer by Cade Cunningham just before the final buzzer. “The only thing we have to do now is you just stay the course, you stay with it,” Spoelstra said. “There’s no way to explain some of this. The banked shot at the end, there’s no way to explain that. “We’re all getting...

Trump to order a plan to shut down the US Education Department

By COLLIN BINKLEY and CHRIS MEGERIAN, Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump plans to sign an executive order Thursday calling for the shutdown of the U.S. Education Department, according to a White House official, advancing a campaign promise to eliminate an agency that’s been a longtime target of conservatives. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity before an announcement. Trump has derided the Department of Education as wasteful and polluted by liberal ideology. However, finalizing its dismantling is likely impossible without an act of Congress, which created...
