GAINESVILLE — After Jon Sumrall went outside to hire his coordinators, Florida’s new head coach turned familiar faces to fill out his growing Gators’ staff.
Sumrall will bring several assistant coaches, including former UF linebacker Bam Hardmon, from Tulane. A day after the Green Wave fell 41-10 at Ole Miss during the opening round of the CFP, Sumrall’s staff began to quickly crystallize during a busy first day as Florida’s full-time coach.
A source confirmed Joe Craddock will work with quarterbacks, after serving as Tulane’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach the past two...
Winderman’s view: With Adebayo again limited, challenges mount for Heat
NEW YORK — Observations and other notes of interest from Sunday night’s 132-125 loss to the New York Knicks:
– At one point early in Sunday night’s fourth quarter, all four of the Heat’s other starters had more points than Bam Adebayo.
– As did three of the Heat’s reserves.
– With every Heat player seeing action with at least as many points as Adebayo with the exception of rookie Kasparas Jakucionis.
– No, Adebayo does not have to score to be effective.
– He still does plenty on the defensive end and the boards.
– But he can’t be a non-factor on offense.
– Because that ups the ante...
Heat fall 132-125 to Knicks, Brunson’s 47 for seventh loss in eight games
NEW YORK — When it comes to slumps, skids and defeats in droves, it’s as if the logic for the losses is without limitation.
Sometimes it’s death by 3-pointers. Sometimes it’s an opposing hot hand. Sometimes one bad stretch doing the damage.
Sunday night, in falling for the seventh time in eight games with a 132-125 loss to the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden, it was all of the above.
For extended stretches, the Knicks could not miss from beyond the arc, closing 20 of 38
For an entire night, Jalen Brunson set the tone, the Knicks guard closing with 47 points.
And for the second...
Should UM’s Malachi Toney have avoided scoring, drained the clock vs. Texas A&M?
COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Hurricanes star freshman Malachi Toney had a clear path in front of him.
Miami’s offense had been stuck in the mud all day, but in the final two minutes of Saturday’s playoff game against Texas A&M, Toney finally got a lane to the end zone. He took it.
Toney’s score put UM ahead of Texas A&M 10-3, which proved to be the final margin of victory in Miami’s College Football Playoff debut.
“They were depending on me to go out there and make a play, so that’s what I went out there and did,” Toney told the ACC Network after the game.
But did Toney make the right...
UCF continues impressive start with win over FGCU
UCF kept up its impressive momentum, hitting a school-record-19 3-pointers to overcome Florida Gulf Coast University 102-80 on Saturday at Addition Financial Arena.
The Knights connected on 54% of their 35 3-point attempts.
Jordan Burks had a career-high 23 points on 6-of-10 shooting from beyond the 3-point line, leading five Knights in double figures. Themus Fulks had 21 points, Jamichael Stillwell added 14, Devan Cambridge had 16 and Chris Johnson had 12.
“We had no idea about that. We just had it going, so that was new to us,” Cambridge said of the 3-point record.
UCF has won nine...
Winderman’s view: Heat’s draft hits keep coming, with Jakucionis in loss showing even more
BOSTON — Observations and other notes of interest from Friday night’s 129-116 loss to the Boston Celtics:
– Yes, a loss.
– But not a lost night.
– Not after seeing this Kasparas Jakucionis.
– For real, even in defeat.
– Another first-round find?
– Yes, just one night, but able to do it on both ends in his first NBA start.
– In only his second career rotation action, a night after his first.
– The 3-point shooting? His shots consistently true.
– For this team, that helps. A lot.
– But also the defensive tenacity to stand up to all Celtics’ challenges.
– The Heat’s crowded backcourt rotation...
Winderman’s view: Even in victory, math still not working with Heat’s 3-point game
NEW YORK – Observations and other notes of interest from Thursday night’s 106-95 victory over the Brooklyn Nets:
– Even with a needed win, the math problem continues.
– The Heat simply don’t take enough 3-pointers.
– With the other part of the equation is they don’t have many to make 3-pointers.
– This time 9 of 28.
– Nine.
– With Tyler Herro out, it’s basically Norman Powell or bust.
– Because it’s not Simone Fontecchio and hasn’t been for a while.
– Yes, the occasional Jaime Jaquez Jr. 3-pointer is heartening.
– As is a 41-footer from Powell at the halftime buzzer.
– Or even the now...
Heat snap five-game skid with 106-95 victory in Brooklyn behind Powell, Ware
NEW YORK – Little has been easy for the Miami Heat lately and little will be easy for the remaining two games of this trip, on Friday night against the Boston Celtics and Sunday night against the New York Knicks.
So if there was a moment for Erik Spoelstra’s team to make things right, to snap a season-worst five-game losing streak, this assuredly was it, against a Brooklyn Nets team that entered 7-18.
But just as the losing streak included a home loss to the now 6-20 Sacramento Kings, nothing was a given about this one.
And nothing was given by the Nets.
So with offense again a struggle, it...
Will Hurricanes star Keionte Scott return for Texas A&M playoff game?
Mario Cristobal has said throughout the week that star defensive back Keionte Scott could return to the field for Miami’s playoff game against Texas A&M on Saturday.
On Wednesday, the Hurricanes listed Scott as probable on the initial availability report. Additionally, the Hurricanes listed Damari Brown as questionable, linebacker Malik Bryant was out and wide receiver Daylyn Upshaw as doubtful.
Cristobal said Scott has been practicing and progressing toward playing.
“He looks OK, looks like he’s certainly progressing,” Cristobal said Wednesday. “He’s getting a fair amount of reps. And...
NBA’s Silver says league will try to work with Heat regarding Rozier impact
MIAMI — For the first time since guard Terry Rozier was arrested in October as part of an FBI gambling investigation and subsequently placed on leave by the league, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver on Tuesday directly addressed the impact on the Miami Heat.
Rozier, who was arraigned last week, remains listed on the Heat roster, with his $26.6 million salary continuing to count against the team’s payroll. In addition, the Heat still owe the Charlotte Hornets a future first-round draft choice from the teams’ January 2024 trade.
Multiple NBA sources have confirmed that neither the league nor the...
