Oilers tie Stanley Cup Final, force Game 7 with 5-1 win over Panthers

The Panthers are on the verge of making history, but it is not the kind of historic accomplishment they were hoping to achieve. After taking a 3-0 series lead in the Stanley Cup Final, Florida has lost three straight games, setting up a decisive Game 7 in Sunrise after it lost 5-1 to Edmonton at Rogers Place on Friday. The Panthers are now at risk of becoming only the second team to lose the Stanley Cup Final after taking a 3-0 lead in the series. The 1942 Detroit Red Wings are the only NHL team to lose a Final after taking a 3-0 lead. The Toronto Maple Leafs, who won that series, are one...

Tim Anderson’s RBI single in 10th leads Marlins past Mariners 3-2 for 3rd straight walk-off win

MIAMI (AP) — Tim Anderson singled in the 10th inning to drive in automatic runner Jake Burger and the Miami Marlins rallied past the Seattle Mariners 3-2 on Friday night for their third straight walk-off win. Anderson hit a grounder off Mariners reliever Austin Voth (2-1) on the first pitch that went into left field. Dominic Canzone threw to catcher Cal Raleigh at home, but Raleigh couldn’t quite handle the throw and his slight bobble allowed Burger just enough time to slide home safely. Starter Trevor Rogers struck out five over six innings, while allowing two runs and four hits as the...

DeSantis vetoes left-lane cruising crackdown, signs bill to allow killing bears in self-defense

TALLAHASSEE — Gov. Ron DeSantis on Friday signed a controversial measure that will bolster self-defense arguments for people who kill bears on their property, while vetoing a bill that would have prevented motorists from cruising in the left lanes of highways. DeSantis’ office announced Friday night that he had signed 14 bills from this year’s legislative session and vetoed three. Among the other bills he signed was a measure (SB 7014) that revamped ethics laws. DeSantis vetoed a bill (HB 317) that would have prevented drivers from cruising in left lanes of highways with at least two lanes...

Florida urges rejection of abortion ‘financial impact statement’ ruling

TALLAHASSEE — A state panel will meet in July to consider revising a “financial impact statement” that has touched off a legal fight as Floridians prepare to vote this fall on a proposed constitutional amendment about abortion rights. But while revisions could be coming, state lawyers Thursday argued that an appeals court should reject a Leon County circuit judge’s ruling that would force changes in the financial impact statement. The state lawyers filed a 50-page brief at the 1st District Court of Appeal contending that Leon County Circuit Judge John Cooper did not have the authority to...

Trump proposes green cards for foreign grads of US colleges, departing from anti-immigrant rhetoric

By ADRIANA GOMEZ LICON (Associated Press) MIAMI (AP) — Former President Donald Trump said in an interview posted Thursday he wants to give automatic green cards to foreign students who graduate from U.S. colleges, a sharp departure from the anti-immigrant rhetoric he typically uses on the campaign trail. Trump was asked about plans for companies to be able to import the “best and brightest” in a podcast taped Wednesday with venture capitalists and tech investors called the “All-In.” “What I want to do and what I will do is you graduate from a college, I think you should get automatically as...

UF slugger Jac Caglianone breaks Gators’ home run record

UF slugger Jac Caglianone took a unique path to the Gators’ home run record, but nothing was going to stop him during a College World Series elimination game Wednesday with Kentucky. Coach Kevin O’Sullivan had the 6-foot-5, 250-pound Caglianone bat leadoff for the first time in his career to pressure the Wildcats and force them to pitch to him. He responded with a single, followed by a stolen base — only the fourth of his career — to set the stage for the Gators’ 7-run opening inning. “I was kind of the lead-off guy that everybody wanted me to be,” he said. “I kind of embraced that role...

Dave Hyde: Panthers run into Connor McDavid again in 5-3 loss and series is on again

SUNRISE — So, yes, in case you wondered, that’s Connor McDavid. That’s the King of the North. That’s the oil to the Edmonton Oilers’ engine. That’s the player who was everything the Florida Panthers feared coming into the Stanley Cup Final for the second consecutive game on Tuesday night. And so for the second game in a row the Stanley Cup trophy came to the arena looking to go home with the Panthers and instead left on the shuttle between South Florida and Edmonton. It’s back to Edmonton for Game 6 on Friday night with the Panthers’ 5-3 loss, back to the Great Beyond and back to a series...
