Burning Man revelers begin exodus after flooding left tens of thousands stranded in Nevada desert

BLACK ROCK DESERT, Nev. (AP) — Muddy roads flooded by a summer storm that left tens of thousands of partygoers stranded for days at the Burning Man counterculture festival had dried up enough by Monday afternoon to allow them to begin their exodus from the northern Nevada desert. Event organizers said they started to let traffic flow out of the main road around 2 p.m. local time — even as they continued urging attendees to delay their exit to help ease traffic on Monday. About two hours after the mass departure began, organizers estimated a wait time of about five hours. Organizers also asked...

Vice President Harris will face doubts and dysfunction at the Southeast Asian nations summit

WASHINGTON (AP) — Vice President Kamala Harris will deepen her outreach to Southeast Asia this week at an international summit in Jakarta, Indonesia, where she’ll try to erase doubts about U.S. commitment to the region stirred by President Joe Biden’s absence. It’s Harris’ third trip to Southeast Asia and fourth to Asia overall, and she’s touched down in more countries there than any other continent. The repeat visits, in addition to meetings that she’s hosted in Washington, have positioned Harris as a key interlocutor for the Democratic administration as it tries to bolster a network of partnerships...

General Daily Insight for September 05, 2023

General Daily Insight for September 05, 2023 Today has a little bit of everything to offer. We begin with a shock when the Moon conjoins rebel Uranus in Taurus, only to turn around and trine alchemical Pluto in Capricorn, adding a dose of intensity to our emotions. The mood will lighten a bit once Luna shifts into Gemini at 4:07 pm EDT, helping us voice anything that might be bothering us — though we’ll still have to put in the effort to see results as the Moon makes one final square to Saturn. Aries March 21 – April 19 You’ve currently got a full plate! Your busy 3rd house is pulsating with...

Why It’s Still a Seller’s Market Today

Even though activity in the housing market has slowed from the frenzy that was the ‘unicorn’ years, it’s still a seller’s market because the supply of homes for sale is so low. But what does that really mean for you? And why are conditions today so good if you want to sell your house? The latest Existing Home Sales Report from the National Association of Realtors (NAR) shows housing supply is still astonishingly low. Housing inventory is measured by the number of available homes on the market. It’s also measured by months’ supply, meaning the number of months it would take to sell all those available...

BOCA RATON — Nebraska transfer Casey Thompson threw five touchdown passes, one of them a 72-yard hookup with Tony Johnson, and Florida Atlantic routed Monmouth 42-20 on Saturday night to usher in the Tom Herman era. Thompson, who also played at Texas, where Herman was his coach, completed 20 of 25 passes for 280 yards. His five TD passes match the school record. Johnson caught two touchdown passes, the highlight being when he caught a ball over the middle, broke a couple of tackles and outraced the defense to the end zone for the 72-yard touchdown. Remembering the tropical zen of Jimmy Buffett in South Florida

If you want to trace the end of COVID as a life-altering menace in South Florida to a single moment, it would be shortly after 8 p.m. on May 13, 2021, when Jimmy Buffett strode onstage at Old School Square in downtown Delray Beach.  Looking relaxed and tanned, in the unofficial uniform of South Florida — tropical shirt and khaki shorts — Buffett’s arrival induced an immediate standing ovation from a wildly expectant crowd of folks from across the country sequestered in pod seating on that early summer evening.  It was the first of four Buffett concerts and the first locally by any superstar...

General Daily Insight for September 02, 2023

General Daily Insight for September 02, 2023 There’s pleasure to be found if we take the time to look for it. The Moon in Aries is driving us along, but an odd angle to the Sun in Virgo could remind us of our responsibilities, whether or not we want to deal with them. A pleasant mood will prevail when the Moon trines Venus in Leo at 5:19 am EDT, setting us up for more exciting things. A final lunar quincunx to Mercury will require a little extra analysis on our part. Aries March 21 – April 19 There’s no such thing as keeping a lid on it today. The Moon is in your sign, giving you extra oomph,...

Hurricanes begin season by roaring to almost 500 yards in rout of Miami (Ohio)

MIAMI GARDENS — Year 2 of the Mario Cristobal Era started with a bang. Three plays into the game, Hurricanes quarterback Tyler Van Dyke connected with wide receiver Colbie Young for a 44-yard touchdown on a screen pass. UM was off and running from the first drive, opening the season with a 38-3 victory over Miami (Ohio) at Hard Rock Stadium on Friday. The Hurricanes’ offense did not score with quite as much speed as the first half went on, having to settle for three field goals as drives stopped in the red zone in the first half. But the offense picked back up in the second half and finished...
