It was far from a perfect performance, but UCF was efficient in its season opener, rolling past Kent State, 56-6 Thursday night at FBC Mortgage Stadium.
The win was the perfect way for the Knights to start their first season in the Big 12 vs. a nonconference opponent.
Quarterback John Rhys Plumlee accounted for four touchdowns but had three turnovers as UCF (1-0, 0-0 Big 12) amassed 723 yards of offense against the Golden Flashes (0-1, 0-0 MAC). It was the most yards in a game since the Knights totaled 737 yards against Temple on Oct. 13.

Former FAU baseball standout Schanuel gets called up by Angels only 40 days after being drafted
ANAHEIM, Calif. — Florida Atlantic University alumnus Nolan Schanuel reached the majors less than six weeks after being picked 11th overall by the Los Angeles Angels in this year’s amateur draft.
On Friday night, Schanuel showed the poise of a veteran in his big-league debut.
The 21-year-old infielder was part of the Angels’ first triple play in 26 years, and also had an unassisted double play earlier. Batting leadoff, he went 1 for 4 and scored two runs.
Despite the great debut, it still wasn’t enough as the Angels lost 9-6 to the Tampa Bay Rays in 10 innings.
“I wouldn’t even say I...
Hurricanes flip blue-chip defensive lineman Elias Rudolph from Michigan
The Hurricanes and defensive line coach Jason Taylor tried to land defensive end Elias Rudolph before he committed in July, but Michigan was the blue-chip prospect’s preferred destination.
But now Rudolph has changed his mind. The four-star defensive end flipped from Michigan to Miami on Saturday night, announcing his decision on social media. His commitment comes just one day after the Hurricanes landed their first 2025 commit, quarterback Luke Nickel.
Rudolph, who plays for Taft High in Cincinnati, is rated the No. 21 edge rusher and No. 292 player in the 2024 class. He is listed at 6-4...
UCF lands commitment from 4-star running back Frankie Arthur
UCF continues to build on one of its best recruiting classes in program history with the verbal commitment of Texas running back Frankie Arthur Monday.
The Oak Ridge (Texas) High product is the 15th player to pledge to the Knights’ 2024 class.
All verbal commitments are non-binding but can become official during the early signing period in December.
Arthur is the No. 111 overall player in the class, according to 247Sports’ composite rankings, and the fifth-best running back in the country. His commitment, along with that of Stacy Gage (23), gives UCF two top-25 running backs in their 2024...
‘Cross that bridge next year’: Malzahn focused on UCF camp, not realignment
In the past week, the future of college athletics changed in a quick and dramatic direction.
Pac-12 members Oregon and Washington announced their plans to join the Big Ten next year while Arizona, Utah and Arizona State finalized their move with Colorado to the Big 12 Conference.
For UCF coach Gus Malzahn, it was just another week of football practice.
“I’m coaching my team,” Malzahn said Sunday when asked about the recent additions to the Big 12. “You wake up and there’s something new.”
It’s unclear what the future holds for the remaining Pac-12 schools — Oregon State, Washington State,...
Hurricanes star Yohandy Morales picked on first night of MLB draft
One of the top hitters in Hurricanes history is likely headed to the pros.
The Washington Nationals picked Miami third baseman Yohandy Morales with the 40th pick in the MLB draft on Sunday night. He is the first of several UM players likely to be selected this year.
“(He) turned out to be one of our all-time great players,” former Miami coach Gino DiMare said. “Clutch player. He’s just a great, great teammate that the players looked up to.”
Morales, a Miami Braddock High alumnus, will likely receive a large signing bonus to persuade him from returning to Miami for his senior year. The slot...

Lofton, who is listed at 6-2...

Hurricanes drop regional game to Texas, putting season in jeopardy
CORAL GABLES — The Hurricanes dug an early hole for themselves on Saturday night, and they could not climb out of it. Now their season is in jeopardy.

Sophomore Karson Ligon struggled in his start Saturday night. Dylan Campell put the Longhorns on the board quickly, smashing a two-run homer to open the scoring in the first...

“Our talk before the game was try to get out in front early,” Miami coach Gino DiMare said. “Couldn’t script it any better.”
The Hurricanes, who entered the postseason seventh in the nation with 112 home runs, hit three more homers Friday. Left fielder Edgardo Villegas got the Hurricanes off to a quick start, driving a...
