Observations and other notes of interest from Friday night’s 140-132 loss to the New York Knicks:
– This is not because of the Karl-Anthony Towns first-half takeover.
– Because he has done that to the Heat over the years even when the Heat have been whole.
– Even when Bam Adebayo has been available.
– But lack of size eventually catches up.
– So if Adebayo isn’t available, as he wasn’t again on Friday night at Madison Square Garden, it leaves Kel’el Ware alone in the center rotation.
– Because Nikola Jovic is not a power player.
– Just not.
– No matter how much the Heat’s rotation states...
Heat unable to keep pace with Knicks in 140-132 NBA Cup loss, despite 38 from Powell
MIAMI – The running has been relentless. For that, the Miami Heat have been rewarded in the scoring column.
The rebounding and the defense haven’t been. Because of that, now consecutive losses for Erik Spoelstra’s team and a middling 7-6 record.
Defenseless as they were in Wednesday night’s home loss to an undermanned Cleveland Cavaliers roster, and again punished at critical rebounding junctures, it added up to a 140-132 NBA Cup loss Friday night to the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden.
It was the highest-scoring game between the teams in the Heat’s 38 seasons, the fourth...
Fifth suspect in ‘Peace in the Hood’ shooting arrested, Boynton Police say
BOYNTON BEACH — A fifth man police say was involved in a shooting at a “Peace in the Hood” event in July at Sara Sims Park was arrested Friday.
Boynton Beach Police said Travonte Edwards, 21, was arrested with assistance from the U.S. Marshals Service and the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office.
Edwards faces felony counts of attempted second-degree murder, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, and firing a gun in public or on residential property.
In September, the Boynton Beach Police Department said it was seeking tips that would lead to the arrest of Edwards and another suspect,...

Heat fail to seize upon shorthanded Cavaliers in 130-116 foul-filled, turnover-plagued loss
MIAMI – Commit enough turnovers and fouls and sometimes it doesn’t matter who you are playing.
It is a hard reality the Miami Heat learned in Wednesday night’s 130-116 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers at Kaseya Center.
As in a Cavaliers team that gave the night off to Donovan Mitchell and Evan Mobley and had lost Darius Garland to injury two nights before.
No matter, on a night the Heat too often fouled instead of defended, too often turned the ball over instead of turned up the offense.
And, with that, much of the edge taken Monday night’s dramatic overtime victory over the Cavaliers, as...
Tribes that restored buffalo are killing some to feed people because of the shutdown
By MATTHEW BROWN and GRAHAM LEE BREWER of The Associated Press and AMELIA SCHAFER of ICT
WOLF POINT, Mont. (AP) — On the open plains of the Fort Peck Reservation, Robert Magnan leaned out the window of his truck, set a rifle against the door frame and then “pop!” — a bison tumbled dead in its tracks.
Magnan and a co-worker shot two more bison, also known as buffalo, and quickly field dressed the animals before carting them off for processing into ground beef and cuts of meat for distribution to members of the Fort Peck Assiniboine and Sioux Tribes in northern Montana.

The timeline for SNAP benefits remains uncertain, even after Congress agrees to end the shutdown
By GEOFF MULVIHILL, Associated Press
Congress has taken a major step toward reopening the government, but there’s still uncertainty about when one of the most far-reaching impacts of the closure will be resolved and all 42 million Americans who receive SNAP food aid will have access to their full November benefits.
The House on Wednesday adopted a plan to reopen and sent it to President Donald Trump to sign.
One provision calls for restarting the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, but even that doesn’t resolve when the benefits will be loaded onto the debit cards beneficiaries use...
No. 10 Gators slip by FSU behind Thomas Haugh and Boogie Fland
GAINESVILLE — Florida forward Thomas Haugh and point guard Boogie Fland joined forces to lead the No. 10 Gators to a come-from-behind win against Florida State.
Haugh, a key to last season’s national championship run, and Fland, the top transfer in a rebuilt backcourt, came together during a dramatic 78-76 win Tuesday night in the O’Connell Center.
Haugh finished with 20 points, 13 rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots, while Fland had 18 points, five rebounds and four steals. Two free throws by Fland with 15.8 seconds to go gave UF a 76-73 lead.
FSU senior shooting guard Robert...
